Step 1: Assemble welding tools

Basic welding torches
There are two common types of air conditioning gas: one with automatic ignition and one with conical or dual ignition.

The recipe for a successful weld requires two parts groundwork and one part science. If you do well two important preparation steps-clean and heat the joint – the solder itself will do the job. When the joint is hot enough, the molten solder immediately flows into the joint and completely covers the entire mating surface, almost following the step-by-step instructions. It hardens there as it cools. First, you have a strong, leak-free seal.

In this article, we will walk you through the basic steps of copper pipe soldering and copper pipe soldering used in most homes. To learncopper pipesWhen you are ready. As you will see, you do not need any special skills to successfully solder copper pipe fittings. You can easily solder a leak-free copper solder the first time, but you can also make mistakes. We’ll teach you how to avoid them and warn you about simple but important safety precautions that will protect you from burns and keep your home fire safe.

The basic welding tool is a propane torch, which includes a regulator and a combination of pointed tips that you screw into the tip of a small tank. To operate, open the fuel regulator valve and spark. For easy ignition, we recommend using a regulator with an integrated igniter (top left). Brilliant gas at the touch of a button. If you buy the simplest version (top right), buy a firing pin. Squeezing the wire handle will create an electric spark, igniting the gas. Striker matches simpler and safer.

Also buy ‘tin flux’ (image 5) or ‘glue flux’. The acidic flux cleans the surface of the copper as you heat the joint, which helps keep the solder flowing evenly. Both types work well. Tin solder contains solder, but you’ll need to add more anyway.

All of the basic copper soldering equipment can be found at full-service hardware stores or home centers – a propane torch, solder, emery cloth (picture 3), and flux. We also recommend using a pipe cutter, flame retardant cloth (see opening photo), heavy duty gloves and eye protection. Wear gloves and goggles and a thick, long-sleeved shirt and hat to protect yourself from burns if molten solder leaks out.

2nd step: Cutting with a pipe cutter

Clean the copper pipe with a pipe cutter. Clamp the pipe between the cutter wheel and guide wheel and spin the cutter directing the pipe one full turn. Tighten the cutter knob a quarter turn and turn the cutter again, allowing the pipe to go deeper. Continue squeezing and turning the pipe cutter until the pipe breaks, about eight turns in total.

Copper is the softest metal and the easiest to cut with a pipe cutter (Photo 1). Buy one up to 1 in. hose, the largest size you might need for most household water lines. Cut the larger section of pipe with a hacksaw, but be sure to cut off any burrs left on the serration. Otherwise, your joints will leak. Hold the coil firmly in one hand and tuck one end under your knee to prevent it from slipping as you squeeze and rotate the knife (image 1). Don’t squeeze it too fast; you will damage the pipe and have to start over.

Drill the cutting head to remove internal burrs by inserting the reaming attachment and rotating one full turn.

The cut may look clean, but be sure to remove the small inner ridge (Photo 2), a brass rim pressed inward by the cutting wheel. Otherwise, it will prevent the flow of water in the pipe.

Step 4: Clean with an emery cloth

Next, clean the contact areas of the pipes and fittings, even if they look as shiny as new. Thorough cleaning is the A-1 key to successful copper pipe welding. It ensures a tight and leak-free seal.

Step 5: Clean with a suitable brush

Clean the inside of copper pipe fittings with a special wire brush sized to fit the diameter of the pipe. You can also wrap an emery cloth around your finger to reach inside, but don’t touch the cleaned surface with your bare hands.

Cleaning is a two-step process – first, removing any corrosion from the mating surfaces (Photos 3 and 4), and second, coating the flux surfaces (Photo 5), a Acid lakes chemically corrode copper.

Clean copper excels with 120-grit emery strips, often sold with solder and flux on household hubs and hardware store shelves (image 3). But fine steel wool or regular 120-grit sandpaper will do. Wipe the inside of the copper pipe fittings with an emery cloth; Just roll a little around your finger and tap inside. But soon your fingers will hurt! The handy mounting brush shown in photo 4 makes this job easier, especially with small (1/2″) etching fittings.

Step 7: Flux the joint

Apply an even coat of flux to the joined surfaces – the end of the pipe and the inside of the fitting. Then, push the joint back until the copper tubing has reached a sufficient depth. Wipe off excess flux.

Step 8: Heat the joint

Heat the joint with your propane torch, moving the cone back and forth to heat evenly. Hold the solder near the joint on the opposite side of the flame until it melts and flows into the joint. Joints should show completely on all sides. Proceed to the next game. The solder hardens as it cools.

Usually it is easier to clean, degrease and assemble the entire copper rail, then start soldering the joints of the copper pipes in one go (opening photo). Light your torch and adjust the flame so the blue cone in the center is about 1-1/4 inches long. The longer the cone, the hotter the flame. The hottest point is at the end of the cone, so hold the flame so that the end of the cone barely touches the coil (image 6). It is not necessary to directly heat the copper pipe, as the fitting quickly conducts heat to the tube inside the joint. When the temperature of the copper reaches the melting point of the solder, the solder you hold onto the copper suddenly liquefies and flows into the joint. hold solderoppositeflame, the coolest place, to make sureallparts of the joint are hot enough. Solder will not fill spots colder than its melting point. Fill the joint until the solder melts, then move on to the next joint. Allow the gasket to cool and harden for 30-45 seconds before applying pressure to the gasket. Be careful; it will still be too hot to touch.

Step 9: Use special techniques for hard spots

Please be patient when soldering copper valves. The joint may require 5-6 times more heat to raise the joint to the melting point of the solder. Heat the joint from multiple sides if possible. Always leave valves at least partially open when soldering them.Photo 8: Angled thread adapter

Avoid overfeeding the joints. About 1/2 inch of solder is enough for 1/2 inch. Brass splice, 3/4 inch solder for 3/4 inch. copper joint. Overfeeding can clog the tube.

You cannot weld pipes containing water. You must drain and dry the pipe in the area to be welded. Heating the tube with your torch will speed this up. Make sure that any pressure built up in the pipe during welding can escape. The easiest way is to keep a tap open at one end of the wire.

  • If using pipes longer than ¾”, heat the pipe fittings from multiple sides for a more even temperature rise. Add solder to the copper from several points and check the joint to make sure the solder fills the joint on all sides.
  • Soldering copper fittings, like the valve in Photo 7, requires more heat. Leave the valve open so that pressure does not build up inside the pipe and cause a leak at the joint. And if the valve has any soft plastic or rubber parts, remove them if possible to avoid damaging them.

Safety tips

  • Temporarily hang a flame retardant cloth (opening photo) or steel plate over wood and other combustible materials when welding nearby. In all cases, provide a fire extinguisher or a bucket of water in case of fire.
  • Turn off the flashlight when you put it down. The propane tank is cracked. Eventually, a lit torch will fall and ignite something.

CAREFUL!

Have a fire extinguisher and a bucket of water or spray can handy. . . just in case your torch starts to burn. Remember that your home’s water supply is often turned off when soldering copper pipes!

Steps to remember:

1) Start with a water free dry connection

2) Clean both the fitting end and tubing end

3) Deburr the copper tube

3) Apply a thin layer of flux to both the fitting end and tubing end

4) Heat the fitting end evenly (remember the solder will follow the heat)

5) Use the copper to melt the solder, not the torch’s flame

6) Wipe down and inspect the finished joint
