Multi-read content how to make shaker style cabinet doors

Recently I showed you everythingstarted remodeling my laundry room. But, I still have to make the shaker cabinet door for the large cabinet that I closed. And while I’m at it, I have to create two doors tocabinets I worked for a friend.

.

These are “swing” cabinet doors that are simple and inexpensive to make, but be warned, they do take a bit of time. BUT, they are very simple and I helped you with a tutorial on how to do it 🙂 (PSSST! This post shows HOW I USED IT to make a cabinet door.I recently started using a different technique to make doors and you can check that out here.)

.

But first, take a look at the linen closet I made. Charming isn’t it? I LOVE shaker cabinet doors – they are simple, elegant and inexpensive. Saving $$$ is always a good thing

First you will need:

1×3 board for frame

Plywood for panel

Wood glue

Kreg Jig& 1″ screw hole(optional)

Wood putty

Abrasive paper

saw table

Miteror chainsaw

Clip

.

Because I paint, I used spruce (or whiteboard) for the frame and luan for the panel (it’s like cheap plywood). If you want to remove stains, I recommend getting hardwood or pine plywood that is very smooth and suitable for 1x3s lumber.

.

I ripped 1x6s on my table saw to make 1x3s, but you can buy 1x3s at local hobby stores pre-cut.

.

Alright, now on the way…

Step 1: Cut the Shaker Cabinet Door Frame

I have a detailed explanation onhow to determine your door size in this article. For this particular guide, take the total width of the door lever and subtract 5″ 1×3 instead of the 5″ I talked about earlier. Cut two 1x3s to this length.

.

Next, take the total height of the door and cut these two 1×3 lengths.

.

Cut these frame panels for all the doors you need to make so you can go to the next step with all the panels at once.

Step 2: Cut the grooves in the frame

Now I usually set up my table saw to cut dados for the interior panel. You can also use a router for this step, but I find a table saw is easier to set up for this step.

.

If you have a dado blade, this will save you time, but you can also do this if you don’t.

.

I would place a flat piece of ¼″ plywood next to the blade and adjust the height until it is STRONG on top of the plywood. I want the blade to only go up about ¼″. I adjusted the ripstop to about ¼” to 5/16″ from the blade. My rip fence broke, so we clamped a 2×4. You gotta do what you gotta do, right?

.

Look at Danny in this photo… I was going to cut him off, but I left him because he was too funny. I’m sure he’s telling me to be careful taking pictures near the table saw even if it’s turned off and the switch is on the other side of the table. He is responsible for security around our house.

Rip fence on table saw set to ¼ inch from the blade to cut dadoes into cabinet door frame

Anyway, I ran all the short boards through the saw as shown above – cutting end to end. Then I flipped it over and ran it again so that when you’re done both sides of the board will run along the rip barrier.

.

Big Picture: Basically I need to cut a groove wide enough to slide the ¼″ plywood into it. The blade is about ⅛ wide. I just try to cut from the center on each side. Does that make sense?

.

On the longer boards (the vertical sides of the door) I don’t want them to go all the way through. I just want to cut the groove an inch or two from each end. Look at the photo below. We did this “trial and error” until we found a good starting and stopping point. I say we because the security manager was overseeing

Stack of cabinet door frame pieces with ¼" dadoes cut for panels

We marked on the 2×4 rip fence that we use to show us where to start and where to stop cutting. So I gently push the board onto the blade and run until I have to stop, then lift the board off the blade.

.

I do this like short planks…run one side, then go back and do the other side. You can see the signs we made in the picture below.

Stop and start marks on table saw rip fence for cutting vertical frame pieces for shaker cabinet doors

In the end, I usually have to go over the boards on each side THEN readjust my blade a bit to cut a small part left in the middle. Just adjust and trim until your groove is wide enough to fit the plywood.

.

Then I have a lot of fragments that look like this:Stacks of shaker cabinet doors frames with dadoes cut for inside panels

Step 3: Cut the panels for the shaker cabinet doors

I cut the plywood inside as follows:

.

Width = (length of top and bottom 1 × 3)″

.

Length: (1 × 3 side length) – (5 inches OR 2 x 1 × 3 width if not 2″)” wide

.

When I cut it, I made sure the grain of the plywood would go up and down on the door plate. It will look better this way. Before assembly, I dry the joints together to make sure everything will work.

shaker cabinet doors dry fit together with inside panel

Step 4: Glue the Shaker cabinet door

Here I have two options: glue or screw. That is the question. You can also use latches if you want–that’s what i usually do lately.

.

To glue, place plywood in the grooves of the sides and generously spray glue along the inside of the top and bottom (where the top and bottom 1x3s will go). Then slide the top and bottom 1x3s into place and tighten. Tighten firmly, but not so tightly that you bend the door. Wipe off excess glue.

.

OR, for screwing, you can drill holes in the top and bottom pieces and screw as shown.

¼" plywood panel sitting in ¼" dado cut on door frame pieces

plywood panel dry fit in dadoes on cabinet door frame pieces

Shaker cabinet doors dry fit into side frame dadoes

Shaker cabinet doors assembled with pocket holes and screws on back side of door

Let the glue dry (if you used it) and sand and putty (and scrub again when the putty is dry) all seams and pocket holes (if using pocket holes).

.

Also, if I’m painting, I run a small bead of putty along the inside corners of the door face where the plywood follows the grooves. This serves two purposes – holding the panel in place so it doesn’t slip, while covering gaps and helping to clean up paint.

front of shaker cabinet doors caulked between inside panel and outside frames

It takes forever for the putty in the holes to dry – be patient! Like the pot that calls the black kettle – I am the least patient!

Shaker cabinet doors back side puttied pocket holes

When the filler is dry, sand everything smooth and first. I recommend applying two coats of primer (both sides). I also recommend sanding after priming and before painting. Everything is so much smoother and more beautiful.

.

A little sanding and you’re done. I would like to have my own advice when I redecorate my house. Believe me…I’m learning from my own experience.

.

You can install using different types of hinges, butI like to use concealed hinges lately because they have so many adjustment options. You can see how to install them in this post. These are the finished doors forfriend’s closet. Take a good look, right?

Obviously, I do these doors all the time. Simple, elegant and fast.

.

I know it’s super long and detailed. I wanted to make sure I was clear on the instructions. It’s a bit long, but it’s a rewarding project. Because now you can hide the clutter in your closet with these super cute doors you made yourself for a few bucks 🙂

Can I make my own Shaker cabinet doors?

If you’ve got a table saw, you can make Shaker-style cabinet doors. You don’t need any special jigs — just your saw, large or small, a miter gauge and a sharp blade. And you don’t need any specially prepared wood; material from a home center will be fine.

Are Shaker cabinets going out of style?

Are shaker cabinets out of style? No! They are a timeless, minimalist style that never seems to fall out of favor, even as other design trends come and go.

How thick should cabinet plywood be?

Domestic plywood used in cabinetry can be commonly found in thicknesses of 5/32 inch and up, but for the purposes of a frameless cabinet ANSI HP-1 nominal ¾-inch thick panels are ideal.

Can you use MDF for stiles and rails?

MDF for the panels… fine. But the rails and stiles will be better served with pine, poplar, maple or whatever hardwood you prefer. The issue with using MDF for your rails and stiles is that it doesn’t take “normal” fasteners well and that becomes problematic when it comes to hinging, etc.
