Multi-read content how to maintain a cedar fence

Cedar is known as adurable and resistant wood, can withstand bad weather. Cedar fences can bring beauty, stability and privacy to the exterior of any home or neighborhood. Although they require little maintenance, specific care is essential to keep the fence in good condition. Of course, cleaning and other general upkeep are necessary to preserve cedars, and with proper care they will remain attractive, attractive, and structurally sound for many years.

The need:

  • garden sprayer
  • Scrub brush
  • garden tap
  • Drink water
  • Waterproof wood glue
  • Brush
  • oxygen bleach
  • ¼ cup ammonia-free dish soap

Fence Installation Best Practices:

Fence posts must first be placed directly into the ground when installing. It is best to avoid setting the post in concrete as this will improve drainage around the post. To prevent the wood from rotting, install the boards at least two inches off the ground.

To protect the wood from weather-induced chips, cracks and warping, apply a waterproofing sealer to the cedar fence. To do this, apply two thin coats of waterproofing with a brush. Be sure to let the glue dry completely between coats. (This process should be done every three to five years.)

Avoid excessive accumulation of water on the fence. Even so, it is unreasonable and impractical to prevent rainwater from flowing through the fence. It is not recommended to place the sprinkler where the water jet can touch the fence, even after the sealant has been applied.

Planting bonsai trees around the perimeter of the fence is fine, but don’t let bushes, vines and the like grow over the fence. Weeds and vines that start to grow on the surface of the fence should be cut.

Cedar Fence Cleaning Recipe:

Your cedar fence should be cleaned at least once a year. To do this, mix three quarts of warm water, one quart of oxygen bleach, and a fourth cup of ammonia-free dish soap in a garden sprayer and pour the solution over the hedge. Let the solution sit for about ten minutes, scrub off the dirt with a brush, then continue rinsing the fence with water.

Mold and mildew should be removed immediately, or as soon as possible, as the mold will eat the cedar if left untreated. To remove the aforementioned natural anomalies, mix a solution of 4 ounces of oxygen bleach and a gallon of hot water in a bucket and scrub mildew from fences and brush with the solution. Again, just rinse the wood with water.

Staining Your Cedar Fence

If your cedar fence is new, we recommend that you let it “dry” in the sun for 5-10 weeks before applying any type of stain. Always choose an oil based stain. Oil based stains will absorb better, and offer better UV and water protection.

Should I clear coat my cedar fence?

Use clear sealer instead to show off all the fine details of wood grain. Another option you have is to use clear sealer on your entire fence. Clear sealers show off all the natural grain of wood. If you use a clear sealer, your fence may turn gray over time.

What is the best protection for a cedar fence?

Best Overall: Ready-Seal Natural Cedar Exterior Wood Stain and Sealer, 5 Gallon. Protect your fence from natural elements like rain and UV rays with this semi-transparent stain from Ready-Seal. This oil-based formula can be applied to all hard and softwoods.

Does a cedar fence need to be sealed?

Seal your cedar fence every three to five years. Avoid letting excessive amounts of water hit the fence. Preventing rainwater from getting on the fence is impractical. Do not place sprinklers where the water stream hits the fence, even after applying a sealer.

How do you keep cedar looking natural?

How long will a cedar fence last?

15 to 30 years
Cedar is one of the most durable and long-lasting woods, making it much more suitable as a material for fencing. It can last for more than 15 to 30 years and is exceptionally sustainable. Cedar wood requires much less maintenance and won’t weather as easily as spruce or pine.

How soon should you seal a cedar fence?

Consider the type of wood, and then wait the proper amount of time (usually anywhere between 1 and 6 months) before staining or sealing your fence. This will allow it to sufficiently weather and to dry or cure.

Do you need to seal both sides of a cedar fence?

If the fence is quality built from cedar, you do not need to seal. The posts (if wooden) and creavices/cracks will rot out long before the open parts of the boards will. If the fence is made from pine / doug fir / larch, then you want to seal.

Remember, if you install a cedar fence it will need 5-7 weeks to dry in the sun before it will be ready for any kind of staining or treatment.

Can I leave cedar fence untreated?

If left unstained or untreated, cedar naturally ages to a gray color. Some people like the look, but others like to preserve the wood’s natural color. Cedar naturally performs well in damp conditions, but a water-resistant sealer gives the wood even more protection against rain and other moisture.

Will sealed cedar turn gray?

When fully weathered, cedar takes on a light silvery-gray appearance. If you like the weather-beaten look of a seaside cottage or an old barn, cedar can develop that look all on its own. But one aspect of cedar’s weathering process that doesn’t appeal to some homeowners is that it turns gray unevenly.

🔴 Let’s Recap: You have a big, beautiful cedar wood fence. But if you don’t properly maintain that wood fence by learning how to care for the wood fence, such as proper cleaning methods and which stain choices and stain types, then it will eventually start to look horrible and even have wood rot. I’m a big fan of using oil stain on a fence. Transparent gives the “natural” look, semi-transparent gives a bit of color, and semi-solid has more pigment than all the previous ones I mentioned.
