Overview

A 2 footer. Level builds are only suitable for small projects such as installing small wall panels, building cabinet walls, and installing single cabinets. But when you need to quickly and accurately set heights over long distances for larger jobs like earthmoving, trenching and concrete formwork, this level of reliability is unmatched. Whenever you try to draw a long horizontal line by repositioning the 2 feet or even 4 feet, end to end, you will create an exaggerated error by lengthening the line. There are several tools you can use inside and out to improve your leveling results. We will show you the best techniques and tools for leveling short, medium and long distances.

Two levels for short distances (4 to 15 feet)

Photo 1: 2-leg extension
Mark the correct height for mounting the floor beams using 2 ft. at the top of a 2×4 line. Find the straightest 2×4 by looking at the edges. Pencil the height of the wall ledger on each column of the bridge.Photo 2: Leveling of trenches
Set the drainage slope by measuring from the supply line. Press down on a reference stake and then on a series of measuring rods spaced 6 feet apart along the track. Check the depth of the trench for proper drainage by attaching a reel to each perimeter stake and measuring the depth of that point in the trench.Photo 3: Line level
Measure off the string when the reading is correct and stable. The line level is correct when the bubbles settle between the hair roots.

Combines a straight board and a 2-footer. Leveling is a good but inexpensive way to level up over shorter distances. For tasks such as adjusting the height of the bridge beam (image 1), place your 2-foot pitch on a completely straight 2×4 top to precisely extend its reach. 2×6 and 2×8 timbers are too heavy to stand stable. To take multiple measurements quickly, secure the 2×4 level with tape or a rubber band.

For jobs that don’t require absolute precision, like digging slopes in a trench, use an inexpensive line level (image 2). Hang directly from a strong rope, such as nylon mason’s rope. For the level to work properly, use only one current level per string, draw the line well and make sure there is little wind around the level.

Electronic water level works well at medium distances (15 to 50 feet)

Photo 4: First correction
Electronically calibrate the water level by first attaching the water pipe and water level to a piece of plywood. Fill the tube with water and the air flows out. Calibrate by loosening the two clamps, turning on the electronic level, and raising the work tube to the reference line. The instrument whistle sounds when the water in the work pipe touches the baseline.Photo 5: Listen to the whistle
Mark grade lines anywhere in the workpiece by placing the work pipe against the face of the nail to be marked, loosening the work pipe clamp, and slowly raising or lowering the pipe until the bell rings. Draw a light mark on the stud, check the position with a sound and make a permanent mark.

The simple principle behind the water level is that the water columns inside the two open ends of a single pipe should be level. Using the raw water level (as part of a garden hose) requires two people. For work alone, we recommend purchasing an electronic ink cartridge (Photo 4). It is very accurate, measuring 25 feet in diameter. working radius and allows you to work alone and around corners as it “shrinks” when the water in the work tube is equal to the baseline to the fixture. If you are installing a level reference mark for the first time and painting several layout lines around the part (including the surrounding corners, Photo 5), you can connect the marks with chalk lines. Measure up (or down) from any straight line to accurately place the ceiling, install level protection or add a wooden wall stop for an overhead cabinet.

When filling the tube with water, add water-based red food coloring for better visibility. Secure both ends of the hose with the supplied clamp so that the water does not suddenly spill out.

For best results, avoid water leakage from the water level by cutting off the end of the work hose when not in use for measurement. Be careful not to step on the tube as you move around the room.

If water escapes or air bubbles enter the tube, you will need to refill the tube and recalibrate the instrument to maintain accuracy.

Laser level: ideal for adjusting altitude over long distances (50 to 100 feet)

Photo 6: Self-leveling laser level
Rent a rotating head laser unit (with self-leveling base) to work over long distances (50 to 100 feet) outdoors or indoors. A basic toolkit should contain tools similar to those shown. Ask the rental center to verify the calibration and charging of the device and teach you how to use the device.Photo 7: Searching for a laser trajectory with a detector
To level the top of all concrete forms, place a rotating laser on its tripod in the center of the construction area, turn it on, and wait a few minutes while the unit levels. Attach the laser probe (or target) to the altimeter (the altimeter should still be pointing at the laser transmitter) and set the reference altitude. Then place the bar on top of each plank and slowly lift the plank up and down until the laser target detects the laser beam and chirps.

We recommend using the rotary laser level (Photo 6) for jobs such as placing concrete formwork panels, cutting the tops of fence posts, or building retaining walls. Like a beacon, the rotating laser shoots a horizontal beam in a continuous circle. Rotary laser levels are the fastest tool for accurately setting benchmarks (within the direct line of sight of the laser) anywhere on a construction site. To save time, rent a self-leveling laser camera.

The rotating laser works in tandem with the “target” laser detector. The continuous laser beam is too weak to see in daylight, so a sensor in the laser detector will beep when it detects the beam. Mounted on an altimeter (the type used by the gauge), the laser finder glides up and down the bar until it “finds” the laser beam to establish the correct altitude.

For the fastest results when placing the formwork panel, have one person use the altimeter to find the laser beam and the second person to place the formwork panel (Image 7). Prepare a form board to place by lifting it over a support stake and hammering in some treble. The deck screw pierces the board, ready to be placed on the stake. Once the laser detector beeps to signal “level”, drive the screws all the way in.

CAREFUL!

Do not look directly at the laser beam.

If you need to make a long, level line (or a plumb line) and don’t own a laser, try this method. Mark the desired height of your line on the wall. Hold your plumbers level at the mark and adjust it until the bubble is centered. Then make a mark at the opposite end of the level (Photo 1).

What size level is best?

We prefer to use levels with 0.0005″/1″ accuracy or better. On a 48″ level, that gives us a maximum error of +/- 0.024″, or 3/125″. However, less expensive and smaller levels like torpedo and pocket models often fall short of that mark.

How do you level ground with string and stakes?

Find a length of string and two wooden stakes. Tie one end of string to a wooden stake and hammer it into the ground at the highest elevation in the area. Hammer in the second stake across the area you want leveled. Pull the string across and tie the other end to the second wooded stake loosely.
