Multi-read content how to kill violets in my lawn

Controlling wild violets in the lawn can be one of the toughest gardening problems a homeowner can face. These pretty little plants can take over a lawn in just a few seasons, and once they get established, nothing lasts as long as wild violets. Controlling or destroying wild violets in lawns can take years.

Why is it so difficult to control wild violets?

wild violetsIt is a cool season perennial that grows best in shade and moist soil. There are three problems with these small, indigestible plants that make it difficult to destroy wild violets. Wild violets come in two varieties – the pretty violets that children choose for their mothers and the simple, unopened ones that hide under the leaves and protect them from most types of wild violet bacteria. Purple flowers can be sterile. The flowers under the leaves are not only fertile, but also self-fertilizing. They do not need to flower to reproduce.

Clusters of thick, underground tree trunks, calledrhizomes, storing water so that the plant can survive drought. When a gardener tries to kill wild violets in the lawn, the rhizomes survive and produce new shoots.

These lovely heart-shaped leaves pose a third problem in controlling wild violets. The waxy coating that gives the leaves a sheen also prevents the herbicide from penetrating the leaves.

Kill Wild Violets

Treatments to control wild violets are best applied in the fall because the plants more readily absorb the herbicide. Topical treatments with an all-vegetation herbicide work best for mild diseases, the downside being scattered brown spots on the lawn. For broader applications, use a granular herbicide. Be sure to check the label to make sure Killing Wild Violets is listed. Concentrates applied with a garden hose will damage the plant, but as with most treatments, repeated application will be required to kill wild violets.

The best method for controlling wild violets is a thick, healthy lawn. Dense grass roots will help keep those cute little devils from taking hold.

Violets are tough weeds. They can be controlled by a herbicide that includes dicamba or 2,4-D, or Trimec. Retired UT Extension Agent Mike Dennison says it will probably take more than one application to control the violets. University of Memphis Director of Landscape Joellen Dimond suggests picking the flowers and bringing them in the house to enjoy. This will reduce the number of seeds. She also recommends using a pre-emergent herbicide to control the seeds.
