How to install a dimmer

Once you’ve decided on the switch that’s right for you, it’s time to install it. Remember that it is recommended that all electrical work be carried out by a certified electrician. The general steps for replacing a light switch with a dimmer are as follows:

  • Cut power
  • . Never start an electrical project while current is still flowing in the room you are working in.
  • Remove the old switch.
  • Remove the wall plate and gently remove the switch. You will see a bunch of white yarn. Use a voltage tester to make sure current isn’t entering the circuit (even if you’ve turned off the power, it’s better to be safe than sorry). Find a string labeled “common” and save it. Disconnect all wires.
  • New dimmer connection
  • . For single pole dimmers, you must connect all ground wires from the dimmer to the green or bare copper wires in the backbox. Twist the ends together and cover them with the wiring nut. Tighten a nut on each pair of wire ends. For a three-way switch, connect only the black wire from the dimmer to the wire labeled “common” and remove the electrical tape. Connect the rest.
  • Replace wall panels
  • . Slowly push the ends back into the electrical box. Tighten the screws securing the dimmer to the electrical box. If you are installing a dimmer with a removable knob, remove it from the dimmer by pulling it slightly outward before attaching the wall panel. If the dimmer has a separate wallplate, tighten the mounting screws that secure the wallplate to the switch.
  • Turn on the power and check the dimmer.

How to replace a dimmer with a standard switch

And of course, if you don’t want to think about anything else, like room brightness, you can always go back to the standard on/off button. Here’s how:

  • Switch off
  • . No matter what electrical work you do, the power must be turned off.
  • Remove the screws from the control panel
  • . Use an ordinary screwdriver.
  • Use a voltage tester on the wire
  • . Even if the power is off, it is important to check for residual electricity. This may shock you.
  • Remove the dimmer from the box.
  • Move the dimmer away from the wall and remove the wire splice connectors with a regular screwdriver.
  • Mount the new standard switch.
  • Wrap the ground wire around the green screw at the bottom of the standard switch. Wrap one of the black wires around one of the copper screws on the side of the standard switch. Attach the other black wire to the other copper screw on the standard switch.
  • Push the new switch into the switch box
  • . Carefully secure the entire package inside the wall and screw the panel back on.
  • Power on and test the new switch.

An annual inspection of your power supply is a must if you are a homeowner. However, if you accidentally forget them, you can always count on Fantastic Handyman’s home maintenance checklist to remind you.

Can you put a dimmer switch on any light?

If you install line-voltage track and rail lights with incandescent bulbs, you can use dimmer switches to control their brightness.

How do you hook up a dimmer switch?

Are dimmer switches easy to install?

Most dimmers are designed to fit a standard wall box opening, which makes it easy to replace the switch for any incandescent or halogen light with a dimmer.

How do you change a light switch to a dimmer switch?

How do you know if a light is dimmable?

Check The Light Bulb

Check if the light bulb you are about to use is dimmable. Dimmable light bulbs work fine on a non-dimmable circuit; however, non-dimmable light bulbs will not work on a dimmable circuit. You can find this information on product packaging or on our product listing pages.

How do you make a light dimmable?

All you have to do is change a light bulb in your house and place the switch plate on the wall. The dimmer has a sticky pad on its back side that you can stick to anything, like the original light switch or the wall next to the light switch.

How do you dim LED lights without a dimmer?

You just simply replace your current bulb with the SceneChange bulb, then you can just toggle your existing light switch on the wall or on a lamp to change the light setting. You can simply adjust the light from cool white to warm white to a warm glow with different brightness.

Do you need special wiring for a dimmer switch?

New dimmers have either a green grounding wire or a green ground screw that you’ll have to connect to a grounding source if one is available. Houses wired with plastic-sheathed cable almost always have bare copper ground wires that you’ll connect to the toggle dimmer switch.

Do both switches need to be 3-way?

A 3-way wall switch controls a common light or set of lights from two separate switch locations. Two, 3-way switches are required in any 3-way application.

Why are my dimmable lights not dimming?

One of the most apparent reasons for dimmer switches not being able to dim all the way is the lack of compatibility between the dimmer and bulb you have used. There are dimmable bulbs and non-dimmable bulbs; if you were to use a non-dimmable bulb with a dimmer switch, it wouldn’t work out at all.

How much does it cost to have a dimmer switch installed?

How Much Do Dimmer Switches Cost? Dimmer switches cost between $10 and $35 on average, although some higher-end models can be more expensive. On top of this, installation costs can be between $100 and $200, depending on the service and your location.

Can I put a dimmer switch on LED lights?

A standard dimmer switch cannot be used with an LED light as you will never be able to dim the LED light either completely or not very well. LED lights need their own special electronic dimmer switch to have a fully functioning and dimming light.

How do you make LED lights dimmable?

LEDs cannot be dimmed like light bulbs, by simply varying their input voltages. Instead, the current running through them must be directly controlled either by a resistor placed in series with the LED or by more advanced methods like constant current regulators.

Can LED lights be dimmed?

The answer is simple. Yes you can dim LED, but not all LED bulbs are dimmable. How does dimming a LED bulb work? The luminous element in a LED lamp is a LED.
