How to Cut Plastic

Photo: istockphoto.com

There is little debate about the proper methods of cutting wood. However, cutting plastic – especially acrylic and polycarbonate – is a whole different story.

Plastics are more difficult to handle for several reasons. For some types of plastic melt when cut unless you take proper precautions. On the other hand, the plastic surface is prone to scratches and the edges sometimes need to be polished after the project is finished.

Here are three different techniques for cutting plastic, depending on the thickness of the material and the desired cut.

How to Cut Plastic

Cut a thin sheet of plastic

If you want a straight cut on thin sheets of acrylic or polycarbonate (up to an inch thick),utility knife, then follow these steps.

  1. Secure the sheet of paper firmly on a large work surface.
  2. Mark the desired cut with a straight edge, then dab the plastic sheet with a utility knife, doing this several times until you reach a deep groove. You’ll want to mark almost half of the asphalt.
  3. Flip the paper over and repeat the scoring process on the opposite side, along the same cut.
  4. Reposition the plastic on your work surface, aligning the rail with the edge of your work surface. Secure the plastic in place with clamps.
  5. Finally, remove the hanging part from the surface.

Cut a thick sheet of plastic

To make straight cuts on thicker (thicker than one inch) acrylic and polycarbonate sheets, you will need to usetable sawWherecircular saw. Use blades specifically designed for cutting plastic, often packaged as “no-flow” blades. Ideally, the teeth of the blade should be even, of uniform height and shape, and close together. More spaced teeth can break or crack the plastic. Note that if you choose to use a regular blade instead of a “non-bendable” blade, generating too much heat can melt the plastic. As a precaution, pause between cuts to allow the blade to cool.

  1. Mark the line you cut with a permanent marker or grease.
  2. Firmly attach the plastic to the work surface.
  3. Use a circular saw (or table saw) to cut plastic the same way you would cut wood.

Cutting curve

When you want to make curved or round cuts in plastic, puzzleis your best bet whether you’re working with thin or thick sheets of paper. Ideally you would use a sharp blade specified for use with plastics. You can also use a blade marked for wood, but the friction of the blade may generate too much heat, melting the cutting resin. To prevent this from happening, you may need to experiment with different jigsaw settings and speeds with a piece of plastic. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions on how to use the jigsaw and you’ll have a perfectly cut piece of plastic for your next DIY or home repair project.

Advice:Always take proper precautions when cutting plastic. Secure the plastic sheet to your workstation with a cone to ensure it does not move during the cutting process, and wear goggles to protect your eyes from shards of acrylic or polycarbonate. Call a professional if you don’t feel comfortable doing the project yourself or don’t have the right tools for the job.
