Multi-read content how to connect double switch

In this tutorial, we are going to discover a simple but interesting concept called 2-Way Switch. It is also known as a stair switch because you can control a single load, such as a light bulb, from two different locations, such as either end of a staircase.

ALERT:This is only the theory that explains the typical operation of the wiring of a 2-way switch. This is not a manual for installing or wiring a 2-way switch. If you are considering doing a similar installation in your home, it is imperative to consult a professional as the process involves working with 230V AC (or 110V AC, depending on where you live).

To present

We use switches all the time in our homes, offices, cars, industry and many other places. The devices we use every day (cell phones and laptops) have multiple switches. A switch is an electrical device used to open or close an electrical circuit.

Yesdifferent types of switches: Toggle switch, momentary switch, rocker switch, digital switch, etc. All switches perform the simple task of interrupting or redirecting current. They are essentially “make” or “break” the circuit.

All of the switches that we regularly use to turn lights, fans, etc. on or off. are at two terminals. But there is a special switch called “two-way switch” which is a key element in the implementation of stair lighting.

So, before you learn about the wiring of two way switches, let’s learn about 2 way light switches, which are the key components of 2 way switches, regardless of the type of wire used. . This is a standard three terminal single pole double throw switch.

The three terminals are usually named COM, L1 and L2, but sometimes the terms COM, 1 way and 2 way are also used. In one slot the COM and L1 terminals are connected, while in the second the COM and L2 terminals are connected.

This type of connection is often referred to as the “Disconnect Before Run” design, because the first connection must be completed before the second connection can be established. This contrasts with a typical two terminal switch, which is just a make or break device.

The following image shows the front and back of a typical household toggle switch.

Two-way Light Switch

How to wire a two-way switch?

As I mentioned in the introduction, toggle switches are very useful in stair lighting because you can turn the lights on just before you start climbing the stairs and when you reach the top floor, you can turn off the light simply by turning the switch located near the top of the stairs.

There are several ways to create a two-way switch connection. One is an older method, which is not commonly used today, and the other is a more modern and secure version, which is implemented in industrial and civil applications. Let’s take a look at these two threads.

Standard 2 way conversion wiring

The first wiring method uses two two-way light switches with three-wire control (3-wire control). The following is a simple 3-wire bi-directional switch wiring diagram.

Standard 2 Way Switch 3 Wire Method

You can see in the diagram that the two COM terminals are connected to each other. The L1 terminals of both switches are connected to the line (or phase or hot) of the AC power supply.

The L2 terminals of both switches are connected to one terminal of the lamp, while the other end of the lamp is connected to the mains neutral.

From the schematic, you can easily visualize how the wiring works. In the default state, as shown in the image above, the light is off. If either switch is activated, the light will turn on. To turn off the light, you can toggle any switch.

For example, in the above state, the COM terminals of the two switches are connected to the respective L1 terminals. Now if we flip Switch 1, i.e. Switch 1’s COM is now connected to its L2 terminal, there is a path to complete the circuit and the light turns on.

To turn off the light we can toggle switch 1 or switch 2 as any toggle action will cut the power to the light. Thus, taking into account all the possibilities, the warning light comes on in two cases:

  • Switch 1 COM is connected to L1 and Switch 1 COM is connected to L2.
  • Switch 1 COM is connected to L2 and Switch COM is connected to L1.

If we compare this configuration with digital electronics, it looks like Ex-OR Gate, where the state of the lights (ON or OFF) depends on the state of the COM terminals of the device. the two switches are connected to terminals L1 and L2 respectively.

The following table shows the truth table for standard wiring, i.e. 3-wire control of a two-way switch, where the output (lamp state) depends on which terminal (L1 or L2) is connected to the COM terminal.

Forward 1 COM (connect to) Switch 2 COM (connect to) Bright state
L1 L1 SWITCH OFF
L1 L2 ABOVE
L2 L1 ABOVE
L2 L2 SWITCH OFF

This method is recommended because the line and neutral line come from the same lighting circuit (or circuit breaker) although it uses more wires.

Alternate two-way conversion wire method

The next wiring design is an older system that you may find in some older homes and industrial facilities. It is also known as two-wire control wiring (2-wire control).

This cabling is not recommended for modern deployments and if you plan to install a new configuration or replace an older system, the previous cabling should be used.

I have included the alternate wiring method for reference only and will explain its limitations as well.

As for the actual wiring, the following diagram shows the implementation of a two-wire controlled two-way switch.

Alternative 2 Way Switch 2 Wire Method

The L1 terminals of the two switches are connected together and the L2 terminals of the two switches are also connected to each other. Coming to the COM terminals, the COM terminal of the first switch is connected to phase (or line or live).

The COM terminal of the second switch is connected to one end of the bulb while the other end of the bulb is connected to the neutral of the AC source.

In the default state (as shown in the diagram), the light is off. But when either switch is turned on, the light turns on. In terms of digital electronics, this configuration is similar to the Ex-NOR gate.

The following table shows the truth table for alternate method wiring, i.e. 2-wire control of a two-way switch

Forward 1 COM (connect to) Switch 2 COM (connect to) Bright state
L1 L1 ABOVE
L1 L2 SWITCH OFF
L2 L1 SWITCH OFF
L2 L2 ABOVE

Although this method saves wires, it is no longer preferred because the live and neutral can come from different lighting circuits (or circuit breakers).

Another major defect is related to electromagnetic interference. It is known that any current-carrying conductor emits electromagnetic radiation. If the live wire and the neutral wire are placed near each other, they will cancel each other out.

But in this wiring, it’s likely that the neutral and power wires are routed separately in different parts of the house, making the conductors one giant induction loop. This will definitely cause interference issues with other EM and RF signals.

For example

I don’t have a two-way light switch to prove it works, but I thought I’d do a similar setup using single-pole double-throw (SPDT) switches and LEDs (essentially, the two-way switch is the SPDT switch).

The SPDT toggle switch can be considered a two-way light switch because it has three terminals and functions very similarly to a two-way light switch.

The following image shows a typical SPDT toggle switch with its terminals.

2 Way Switch SPDT

As for the wiring, I went with standard wiring (first method, i.e. 3-wire control) with a 3.7V lithium-ion battery as the power source. It works perfectly.
