Have you tried bleaching drop cloth with little success? Let me share my tips with you!

The drop cloth I use can be found here:

UPDATE MUST READ:  I have heard from several readers that the brand of drop cloth you buy makes all the difference.  I did not know this, since I have only ever used this brand from Amazon (linked above).  Other brands turns gray and off white.

UPDATE PART TWO: Thanks to Lori, a lovely reader of my blog, I now know why some other brands won’t turn white.  The drop cloths I recommend from Amazon are 100% cotton, so bleachable.  Some brands are made with 50% polyester, so unbleachable. I knew people were having trouble with other brands, but now I actually know why!

UPDATE PART THREE: It was brought to my attention by a reader that you should not use this large amount of bleach if you have a septic system.

I will show you how to bleach drop cloth to make it ready for all your DIY projects.

Its the perfect fabric for slipcovers, pillows, curtains and more.

*forgot to mention* Let the washer agitate a little before letting it sit all day, to fully incorporate the bleach. Also, I will probably let it agitate periodically throughout the afternoon/evening without letting it finish the cycle until tonight! More info available here:

Bleach tie-dye is a GREAT way to upcycle black shirts that have been stained. The method is similar to tie-dye with color, except it is WAY faster!! You only need to let the bleach sit for about 10 minutes then you rinse and wash it. After you you bleach tie-dye you can add more colors over the top (I add blue over mine to mute the orange). This method is simple and quick! Be careful whenever you use bleach, good luck:)

Supplies

Bleach (1/4-1/2 cup)

Water (1/4-1/2 cup)

Squirt bottle

Black Shirt

4 rubber bands

gloves (optional)

Steps

1. get shirt wet

2. swirl shirt

3. secure with rubber bands

4. add bleach

5. let it sit till it bleaches a color that is darker than the one you want (the final color will be lighter after you wash it)

6. rinse and wash

7. wear your new threads

This week I investigate color fading with varying concentrations of bleach. If you’re trying to figure out how much bleach to use to achieve a specific amount of fade, this simple experiment could help you figure it out! I used different solutions of bleach and water and tested four different fabrics to see how the color changed. Some fabrics interact with bleach more than others, and I was able to determine fabric / bleach combinations to get the results I am looking for. A simple experiment for basic understanding! (HA! Bleach is a base!) The best part of this experiment is that you can do it at home and tweak it to meet your needs! Thanks for watching!
