Possible dangers with algae

Although seaweed is considered a very healthy food, it can pose certain risks if consumed in excess.

Excess iodine

Seaweed can contain a very high amount of iodine and present many risks.

Interestingly, the high iodine intake of the Japanese is considered one of the reasons why they are among the healthiest people in the world.

However, the average daily iodine intake in Japan is estimated at 1,000–3,000 mcg (667–2,000% RDI). This poses a risk for people who consume seaweed daily, as 1,100 mcg of iodine is the tolerable upper limit (TUL) for adults (6,8).

Fortunately, in Asian cultures, seaweed is often eaten with foods that can inhibit iodine uptake by the thyroid gland. These foods are calledgoitrogensand is found in foods like broccoli, cabbage, and broccoli (8).

Additionally, it is important to note that seaweed is water soluble, which means that cooking and processing it can affect its iodine content. For example, boiling kelp for 15 minutes can lose up to 90% of its iodine content (8).

Although some case reports have been linked to consumption of iodine-containing kelp and thyroid dysfunction, thyroid function returned to normal after consumption was stopped (53,54).

However, large amounts of algae can affect thyroid function, and symptoms of too much iodine are often similar to those of too little iodine (6).

If you think you are consuming too much iodine and are experiencing symptoms such as swelling around your neck or weight fluctuations, reduce your intake of iodine-rich foods and talk to your doctor.

Load of heavy metals

Algae can absorb and store minerals in concentrated amounts (8).

This poses a health risk, as algae can also contain large amounts of toxic heavy metals such as cadmium, mercury and lead.

That said, the heavy metal content of seaweed is often below the maximum permitted concentrations in most countries (55).

A recent study analyzed the concentrations of 20 metals in eight different types of seaweed from Asia and Europe. It found that the levels of cadmium, aluminum and lead in 4 grams of each seaweed posed no serious health risks (56).

However, if you regularly consume seaweed, it is possible for heavy metals to build up in your body over time.

If possible, buy organic seaweed as it is less likely to contain significant amounts of heavy metals (56).

In shortSeaweed can be high in iodine, which can affect thyroid function. Algae can also accumulate heavy metals, but this is not considered a health risk.
