With the holidays approaching, it’s time to start decorating, and a perfect place to start is with a wreath! A wreath is a beautiful expanse of greenery, with countless style variations, that you can use to decorate your mantel, doors, and stairs. Stairs decorated with garlands and lights look beautiful in any home, and there are many ways to hang and decorate garlands to suit your style.

The best methods for hanging wreaths on your stairs include:

  • To wrap up
  • Booty
  • Lay flat

Decorating garlands around your home can be just as fun as decorating your tree. But before you start, you need to decide how you want to hang your wreath. Keep reading to learn different ways to hang your wreath!

decorated metal handrails for the holidays, how to hang garland on a staircase [3 easy ways]

How to hang a wreath on the stairs

Now let’s look at the top three ways to get a dramatic wreath on your stairs.

To wrap up

One of the most popular ways to decorate stairs with wreaths is to wrap the wreath around the railing. This requires at least two attachment points and provides decent coverage. However, this method uses more tinsel to wrap continuously around the railing, so it’s important to consider how much material you have available if using this method.

High

If you’ve seen a railing adorned with garlands, it’s probably upstairs along the railing. This method looks beautiful, especially when decorated with lights, bows, and even Christmas lights.

The easiest way to do this is to use zip ties. You can use any colors you want as they will be hidden under garlands or decorations.

Starting at the bottom of the railing, use a zip tie to tie the wreath around the railing. It helps if you have a second set of arms to hold the crown in place while tying the lanyard.

Before you start wrapping the garland around the railing, decide what you want it to look like. For a tight wound, wrap the crown through each layer of strap. If you want less coverage on your railing, you can wrap the garland around the railing in equal increments, such as every second or third garland.

Wrap the wreath over the top of the railing, then secure it with another zip tie. If you want it to be even more secure, you can add a lanyard every 3 or 4 packs. Once the wreath is in place and the zip ties are tight, trim the excess plastic from the zip ties and adjust the greenery to hide them.

If your wreath is made from a plastic texture or isn’t as soft as a flower, hiding the zip ties can be a challenge. To secure the garland around the lanyard, you can position the rope to cover the lanyard and then tie the garland around the railing with blue floral wire.

This rope will not be strong enough to hold the wreath to the railing without a zip tie. So, although it combines better than zip ties, it is better to use them together.

Low

Attaching a garland to the top of the railing may interfere with the use of the stair railing. If you want to avoid this, you can wrap the wreath around the base of the flower cluster. This is perfect if you have children or elderly people who need access to the railing to use the stairs safely.

When using a garland at the bottom of the inflorescence, you can choose to make it full and thick, giving the illusion of a lush forest path. Use lights, pine cones, bows, and other decorations to make it as intricate or minimal as you want.

Attaching a garland to the stairs in this way is very simple. Since the wreath will be on the floor, you can use garland to tie the garland to the bottom strap, then knit through the garland on top and maybe add another garland.

For the bottom of the stairs, you’ll want to go around each baluster individually to create good coverage. If you want it to look thicker, you can double the length of the wreath and wrap it in the opposite direction from stair to stair.

Make sure there are no garlands that interfere with your use of the stairs, which could cause someone to fall and injure themselves.

Booty

If you are looking for a classic look for your stairs, you can attach your wreath to it. This makes the balustrade relatively clear and can decorate the outer sides of the staircase. There are two different styles you can achieve using the swag method.

Deep

A deep charm is when you use fewer attachment points and allow for a lower slant of your crown. On a medium staircase you typically tie one end of the crown to the bottom, then the other end to the top of the railing and let the rest of the crown hang down the middle. You can then find the center point of the railing and attach it to the center of the wreath with a zip tie.

You can use large bows to hide the zipper at the attachment points for decoration.

Cultivate

By adding more nicks you can create shallow indentations. This provides more coverage than a deeper swag. Again, start by attaching one end of the wreath to the bottom of the railing and the other to the top. Then you can specify how many points you want to connect.

The easiest way to do this is to reattach the middle, then attach the center of each new trough to the railing for at least five attachment points.

Apartment

You can also tie the wreath in a flat lay or where the wreath lies flat on top of the railing, or just below it, with no wrapping or wrapping. The easiest way to do this is for you to have two people, one to hold the wreath and the other to tie it.

Starting at the bottom, tie the end of the garland, then continue to hold it flat while someone else periodically ties it at the top. This will prevent it from slipping.

If you want to mount it along the underside of the railing, use the same process while attaching it to the beams. For this method, it is difficult to hide the zip ties, as the garland will not wrap around the railing or balustrade.

The best attachment would be the garland lanyard. They are basically twist ties wrapped in faux pine to blend into an existing wreath.

How many garlands do you need for the stairs?

Depending on how you hang the wreath will determine how to measure how many wreaths you will need. If you’re going to wrap the crown, you’ll need more than if you were to go the swag method.

To wrap, measure the length of the railing, then fold it in half. So if your railing is 12 feet long, you will need 24 crown feet. If you are going to wrap this garland around a new pylon, or the first garland at the bottom of a staircase, measure the height of this garland and add it to the length. So if your railing is 12 feet long and the post is 3 feet high, you would do 12 3 = 15, then 15×2 = 30 crown feet.

To measure crown swag, you only need one and a half lengths of crowns. So for a 12 foot long railing you would make 12×1.5 = 18 feet of garland.

How to hang the wreath on the railing outside?

The way to hang wreaths indoors is similar to the way to hang wreaths on stairs outdoors. However, there are methods that are more effective than others. For example, your best bet is to wrap a crown and tie it with a lanyard. This will protect the crown from the elements better than most other methods.

How long will fresh wreaths last in the house?

Cool wreaths are best used outdoors as the cold weather will help them stay fresh longer. Indoors, however, fresh wreaths will last about two weeks. To last as long as possible, keep it out of direct sunlight and preferably away from other heat sources.
