7 Mistake-Free Tips on Choosing Paint Colors 1. Don’t choose the paint first! 2. Use inspirational pieces 3. Choose neutrals for walls 4. Understand undertones 5. Use the largest prototype possible

7 Mistake-Free Tips on Choosing Paint Colors

1. Don’t choose the paint first!

I know that sometimes it seems like you should choose your paint color first because painted walls take up a lot of decorative space in your home. However, choosing one of the thousands of paint colors to go with your other decor is much easier than finding decor that matches a paint color.

2. Use Inspiration Pieces

So if you don’t choose your paint color first, what do you do?

Well, you use partial inspiration to draw your colors from it.

InHow to Create a Whole Home Color Palette, I told youThe best way to choose your colors – including paint – is to pull them from a multicolored couch, bed sheet, piece of art, or even a piece of fabric you like.

3. Opt for a neutral color for the walls

If you love color, you might want to use some nice, bold pops of color on your walls. However, for most of us, it’s best to keep the walls neutral and use those bold splashes as accents and accessories.

I recommend opting for neutral walls for several reasons:

  • If your walls are neutral, your focus should be on the furniture and accents rather than the walls. This is definitely what you want!
  • If your walls are neutral, you can easily change accent pieces if you change your mind about which color you like. It happened!
  • Neutral walls also make it super easy to change your decor with the seasons, or even just add holiday and seasonal accents.
  • Medium tone neutral walls are great for homes because they hide scratches and dirt quite well!

4. Understand the nuances

The reason your walls may not look the way you imagined after painting them is that all paint colors are made up of other colors and have what are called warm or cool tones.

Warm paint colors will have a base color (shade) that is a warm color, such as yellow or red.
Cool paint colors will have a cool base color, such as blue, green, or gray.

5. Use the largest prototype possible

After choosing a few matching paint colors, grab the larger paint samples from your store and take them home. Or get sample-size test kits and paint them on bristol board so you can move them around your space.

See great patterns in all kinds of lights, at different times of the day, in different parts of the room. Look at them next to the couch, rug, and artwork.

Lighting will affect the appearance of paint colors throughout your home and can even make the same color in one room look different from the next. The larger the color swatch, the easier it will be to determine which paint colors are best for your space.

  • South-facing rooms tend to have slightly warmer light due to the sun’s rays throughout the day. This means that natural light will be a yellowish-white light and may fade colors, at least a little. Even so, most paint colors can work in a south-facing room, but cooler colors may be preferred for a more golden light balance.
  • Rooms facing north will have cooler blue or gray natural light. For these spaces, you can use a cool color, but it will appear colder and bluish-gray and colder than in the other room. Warm paint colors are preferred in north-facing rooms.
  • East and west facing rooms will have warm or cool lighting, depending on the time of day. So you can use warm or cool paint colors in rooms facing east and west directions.

6. Choose the right paint – Paint Sheens

Another thing that affects the appearance of your paint is gloss. In general, the higher the brightness, the easier it is to keep clean. Unfortunately, the higher the brightness, the more imperfections it will present in a space. So if you are trying to hide flaws in your walls, use a matte finish undercoat.

  • Shadow
  • would be the easiest to wipe down and clean, but too shiny for walls. Good gloss for baseboards, decorations and sometimes cabinets.
  • balloon for sale
  • will generally be easy to clean, with much less shine, although it won’t do well on walls in large spaces. The semi-gloss is ideal for decorations, cabinets and areas with high humidity, such as bathrooms.
  • I would recommend one
  • satin
  • for wall-mounted use in high traffic areas such as hallways and children’s bedrooms. A satin finish is also good for bathrooms because it is washable.
  • Egg shell
  • It will last a bit longer than matte or dull paint, so choose it for spaces that get a lot of traffic and may be a bit overused, like the living room or dining room.
  • Flat or matte
  • is best in rooms where the walls won’t really be touched, like the master bedroom.

7. Create a color scheme for the whole house

Although you don’t necessarily have to paint the entire interior of your home in one color, if you want a consistent flow throughout your homeYou really don’t want to choose paint colors individually or room by room without a plan. You need a color scheme for the whole house. The Whole Home Color Palette will give you a guide to the general colors in your home, while giving you the creativity to use those colors in different ways in different rooms.

For example, in our house we have white, gray and black tones.

6 squares of colored neutrals to illustrate a monochromatic paint palette

But weuse these colors in different proportions in each room.

In our kitchen, for example, we have Eider white on the walls, pure white on the trim and the hood (it also goes well with the white Ikea cabinet doors) and island black.

farmhouse style kitchen open shelves black island used to demonstrate the use of black in the kitchen

In the adjoining living room we have Eider White walls and a white ship’s fireplace, as well as a black accent wall.

black shiplap wall and neutral decor to show that black is on the wall in the living room that is adjacent to the kitchen

Same paint color, different position and scale. And you can do the same at home withthe whole color palette of your home.

How many paint colors should be in a house?

Yes, it depends. The general idea with a whole house color scheme is to have:

  • 1 white color,
  • 1 neutral,
  • and 3 other colors
  • (plus wood and metal)

These are not necessarily paint colors, but colors in general. The grand total is therefore 5 colors, although you can also have shades of the primary color as paint colors.

(Kids’ rooms don’t need to be in your whole home’s color scheme, as they tend to be brighter/more colorful and often based on their own theme.)

What is the best paint color for a small living room?

The best paint color for any small space (living room, bedroom, dining room, kitchen) is one that makes it look bigger and more open.Lighter colors tend to make a room appear larger because they seem to move away from you in your field of vision. So consider white, cream, light gray or even a lighter version of your favorite colors like green or blue. However, you can totally break this rule for small rooms like bathrooms!

On the contrary, if you want to create the feeling of a larger and cozier space, try using warmer and darker colors.

Item 1 Don’ts When Choosing a Paint Color

So now you knowThe designer’s top tips for choosing paint colors, there is one more very important thing you need to know. Something you shouldn’t do. The important thing is, I need you to promise me that you’ll never do it again…

There’s a familiar story that I hear all the time. Someone goes to the paint/metal store to buy some paint to prep the weekend craft room he plans to start the next day. They have a general idea of the colors they want (blue, green, red, yellow), but they don’t know exactly what color they want.PaintColor. So they walked over to the paint department to look at the paint chips. After some selection and deliberation, they pick a color they like and get a gallon or two of the mix. They were delighted to be painted that color on the wall.

CORN.

Oh, but.

But when they got home and started painting, the color of the paint wasn’t quite the same as at the store. Something is seriously wrong.

There’s a reason for that…they brokebiggest ruleyou really MUST follow it 100% of the time when choosing paint colors.

Do you want to know the one thing that NEVER DOES when choosing paint colors?

DO NOT choose paint colors in store!

For the love of Pete, don’t!

Why You Shouldn’t Choose Store Paint Colors

The paint is made up of different colors, creating tones that look different in different lighting conditions.

Remember the above story on tones and our lesson on color theory? (For all the color theory details you need to know, click/tap here to review.)

When you or I choose a paint color at the store, it’s usually underyellowfluorescent light, right? Well, this fluorescent light changes the way all paint colors look to our eyes and how we see tones.

It just won’t be the same at home. WHEN!

Learn more about paint samples

The nice long paint samples you can get at the hardware store are handy for choosing paint colors. But only if you understand them!

Choose the color combination

Paint swatches usually have 3 or more colors in the same row. Each sample is grouped by color temperature.

So on a swatch you will have several shades of colorhot or cool.A pattern will NEVER have both warm and cool colors.

The more the sample color is muted, the more gray is added. If you keep the same saturation and color temperature, you can easily coordinate colors in your space.

  • For example, using the color swatches below, you can choose multiple colors from one swatch for a beautiful and soothing monochromatic look.
  • Or you can choose, for example, a third color from two different samples. Doing this will keep the same level of saturation, which will provide a cute color scheme.

Choose the whites

To select whites, stay within the same color temperature zone (warm or cool).

White is close to a cool color on a swatch that complements a cool color, while white is close to a warm color on a swatch that complements a warm color.

  • Stay cool with cool and warm with warm for monochromatic or similar color combinations.
  • Or if using a complementary palette, combine hot and cold.
