NCDA\u0026CS Marketing Specialist Nick Augostini explains how to pick a great watermelon.

Some people thump them, some people use straw, and some people just know. But, if you’ve ever had trouble picking out a good watermelon, here are some tips to keep in mind.

First, check to see if there are any bruises, holes or decay. Next, pick up the melon and see how it weighs compared to other melons of the same size. Watermelons are 92 percent water, and the melon should be heavy for its size. Finally, look at the bottom side of the watermelon – this is where the watermelon sits on the ground. It should be a creamy yellow color. If it’s white the watermelon is not quite ready, and if it’s a bright yellow the watermelon is too ripe.
