Popular questions about how to measure a toilet height

how to measure a toilet height?

Toilet height is measured from the floor to the top of the rim. Whether it’s marketed as chair height, comfort height, or tall height, the best toilets to buy for your bathroom should have a rim height that makes it easy to sit down and stand up.

How do you determine the height of a toilet?

Most toilets feature a standard bowl height of 14 to 15 inches above the floor. If you’re on the taller side, you can get a taller bowl height of 17 to 19 inches. Choosing a taller toilet bowl height is especially common for a master bathroom design or for a powder room that many guests will use.

What is the difference between standard height and comfort height toilets?

Comfort height toilets have a seat height of between 17 and 19 inches. This is just about the same height as the height of a chair. Standard height toilets have a seat height of between 14 and 15 inches or slightly more.

What is the standard height of a toilet?

Standard toilet height is around 14 1/2” from the floor to the bowl rim, without a toilet seat. In recent years toilet bowl height has increased to assist people with sitting and standing up, for the benefit of taller people, and those with physical handicaps and/or the elderly.

How do you measure a 10 or 12 inch toilet?

If the old toilet is still there, measure from the center of the capped bolts (on the bottom) to the wall (not the baseboard). There should be 24 inches of clearance from the wall facing the bowl and 15 inches on each side as a guideline. If your measurements are between 11.5 and 12.5 inches, it is a 12-inch rough-in.

Can a toilet be too tall?

Anything that’s lower than 17 inches, it’s a standard height toilet. Or higher than 19 inches, it will be a non-standard toilet with an Exception clause to 604.4 of the American Disability Act for toilet seats.

What is the most comfortable height for a toilet?

17 to 19 inches
The ideal height for your toilet will depend on three things. Standard toilets are usually around 15 inches high at the seat. If you are a tall person, that could be too low for you. You might want to check into a floor-mounted “comfort height” toilet that is 17 to 19 inches in height or elevated toilet seats.

Are chair height toilets better?

The taller seat simply makes it easier to sit down and stand up. The higher seat alleviates discomfort that comes from squatting down and cocking the knees out to the sides. A comfort height toilet is especially beneficial for taller people, seniors and anyone with knee or back pain.

Are higher or lower toilets better?

The higher bowl height can be good for the knees and back and can offer real advantages to taller folks, the elderly and people with mobility problems—these toilets are extremely popular and widely used.

How tall is an extra tall toilet?

Extra Tall Models

Toilets taller than 19 inches are optimal for individuals over 6 feet tall who have difficulties with even comfort toilets due to their height or mobility issues. Extra tall versions are typically 20 to 21 inches from floor to bowl yet are compact enough to fit in the standard private bathroom.

How tall is a standard elongated toilet?

A comfort height toilet is sometimes known as an Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) toilet because the height matches that used for ADA-compliant toilets, 17 to 19 inches from floor to seat. This is like the height of a chair. The height of a standard toilet is about 15 inches from floor to seat.

What does rough in size mean for toilets?

Toilet Rough-In Measurements and Standards

Start by measuring the rough-in size. This is the distance between the wall behind the toilet and the center of the drainpipe or the bolts that hold the toilet to the floor. It’s best to perform this measurement before you remove the old toilet.

Can you replace a 14-inch rough-in toilet with a 12-inch rough-in toilet?

Replace a 14-inch rough-in toilet with a 12-inch rough-in toilet. You can definitely replace a toilet with a rough-in of 14 inches with one with a rough of 12 inches. The problem with this method is that a 2-inch gap will be left between the toilet tank and the wall. Install an offset toilet flange.

Can you replace a 12-inch rough-in toilet with a 10-inch rough-in toilet?

A toilet with a 12-inch rough-in will definitely not fit into a space with a 10-inch rough-in, but a toilet with a 10-inch rough-in actually has extra space in a 12-inch rough-in space.

Can you replace a 10-inch rough-in toilet with a 12-inch?

The rough-in for your bathroom plumbing should match the rough-in for the toilet. Even if a toilet is designed for a 10-inch rough-in, you can still install it in a space with a 12-inch rough-in.

Measuring for a new toilet seat

In this video we show you how to measure for a new toilet seat / toilet lid

You will need to take four measurements from your toilet, starting with the length

Place one end of your tape measure between the fixing holes and stretch out to the very front edge of your toilet. This will give you the length.

Next, measure across the pan at the widest point and note down the width.

Then the height. This is the distance from the fixing holes to the cistern or wall.

And finally, note the distance between the two fixing holes as well, as this may sometimes vary between seats.

Now that you have your measurements, check out our guide on toilet seat replacement.
