Step 1:Start replacing the dishwasher

In most cases, you won’t need any special tools or skills to replace or install the dishwasher. Most dishwashers are 24 inches wide, so you won’t have to change cabinets to install a new one. (If you resize, you’ll need to change your cabinets. This requires more advanced carpentry skills, which we won’t cover here.)

You may have noticed that the extra layers of flooring raised the height of the floor in front of the old dishwasher. This can make it difficult to remove the old dishwasher and install a new one. In some cases, you have to loosen the counter or remove the floor when learning to plug in the dishwasher. Consider consulting a professional installer if you are unsure of the best strategy.

Grab a blanket, old rug, or cardboard to protect your floor while you try to remove the dishwasher. Assemble two adjustment wrenches, a screwdriver, a tape measure, a pair of pliers and a level. You will also need a shallow pan, bucket, sponge and rag to catch any water that comes out of the lines when you unplug them.

Turn off the power to the dishwasher at the main control panel or unplug it under the sink. Also turn off the water entering the dishwasher at the nearest shutoff valve, usually hot water under the sink. Or turn it off at the water heater. Consider removing your sink doors to make it easier to disconnect the drain lines when you start working on the dishwasher.

2nd step:Disconnect power cables and water lines

Photo 1: Remove the front panel
Turn off the power, remove the front panel, and use a voltage tester to make sure the power is off. Unplug the cord and remove the cable from the box. The dishwasher wiring will come later.Photo 2: Cut off the water supply
Remove the compression seal nut from the water supply line (water is shut off). Notice how the elbow points at 90 degrees, then pull it out.Photo 3: Unclog the pipes
Slide the dishwasher drain hose away from the inlet handle on the sink drain hose. Drain it in a bucket. Remove the screws securing the dishwasher to the counter.Photo 4: Take out the dishwasher
Lower the dishwasher and slide the cardboard under the feet. Then gently lift and slide out the dish sponge. Route the drain hose through the side wall of the cabinet.

The electrical and hydraulic connections are located under the dishwasher, behind a lower front panel that you must remove (Photo 1). Always check with a voltage detector to make sure the power is off. When you remove the power cord from the box, leave the cable tie intact and reuse it on a new dishwasher (Image 12). Sometimes dishwashers are connected by a plug and cord rather than “hard-wired” as shown in our photo. If so, unplug the cord and reuse it on a new dishwasher. If it is in poor condition, buy a new one from the appliance dealer.

Usually the water supply wire is ductile copper or braided stainless steel. In either case, remove the nut securing it to the dishwasher’s 90 degree joint (Photo 2). As long as the nuts and washers are in good condition (no cracks or chisels; Photo 11), leave them on the wire for later use. You can slightly bend the copper line, but be careful not to bend the line. If you do, you will need to replace it. The flexible stainless steel series is a good alternative. They are available at hardware stores or home centers. Make sure you buy them long enough and have the right accessories for the old one.

Remove the 90 degree fitting for use on a new dishwasher. It is important to orient it in exactly the same direction on the new machine so that the water flows directly into it. Otherwise, you can bend your elbow.

Drain any standing water inside the dishwasher before removing the drain line under the sink. This is a flexible hose that attaches to an inlet arm on the drain pipe of a sink or garbage disposal (Photo 3). When you slide out the old dishwasher, you will need to simultaneously run the drain hose through the hole in the sink cabinet. Prepare a cloth to wipe the water from the line.

Lowering the dishwasher gives you more room to slide the dishwasher out. Chances are the balance foot will be difficult to rotate, but oil seeping into the threads can make this easier. If you need more space, cut the legs with a hacksaw blade and unscrew the screw. Then, be sure to put some cardboard or a rug under them to avoid chipping the floor when you take the dishwasher out.

Step 3: Install the dishwasher:Preparing a new dishwasher

Photo 5: Turn on the water tap
For dishwasher installation, wrap the 90 degree fitting twice with Teflon tape and screw it onto the new water valve. Tighten, bend like on the old machine.Photo 6: Fixing the drain wire
Screw the new dishwasher drain line into the sink cabinet. Loop it higher than the inlet arm of the sink drain or litter box. Slide it out and tighten the clamp.Photo 7: Dishwasher tripod adjustment
Lay the dishwasher’s water supply, drain, and electrical lines flat on the floor. Measure the clearance height, then adjust the wheel and bracket according to the manual.

For instructions on how to install the dishwasher, remove the new dishwasher according to the instructions provided in the box. Once uncategorized, you will find dishwasher installation manuals and instructions on how to install the dishwasher inside the dishwasher. Review the dishwasher installation before proceeding; Instructions may vary slightly from the details we show.

Turn the dishwasher backwards and snap the 90 degree joint (image 5). Do not reuse your old drain hose; The dishwasher will come with a new one. To prevent a sink clog from flooding the dishwasher, make sure the drain hose loops all the way to the bottom of the cooktop (Photo 6). Some plumbing codes require a special clearance in the drain line. Call your local plumbing inspector for dishwasher installation rules.

The manual will explain how to replace the dishwasher and adjust the leveling legs and/or wheels according to the height of the opening. It is easier to place them before sliding them into the dishwasher. Make minor adjustments after installing the dishwasher. But if your kitchen floor is built up (higher than the dishwasher area), you will need to adjust the back leg after it slides into the opening. If your dishwasher is equipped with a rear wheel without rear adjustment, you may need to place blocks (Photo 7) to raise the backrest to the height of the finished floor. Secure them to the floor so they don’t wobble when the dishwasher is running.

Step 4:How to connect the dishwasher and reconnect it

Photo 8: Insert the new dishwasher
To learn how to install the dishwasher, grasp the sides of the dishwasher, lift it slightly, and roll the dishwasher into the opening. Protect the kitchen floor with a tarp or cardboard.Photo 9: Alignment of the dishwasher
Slide the dishwasher until it is clean in the drawers. The location may vary slightly depending on your dishwasher and cabinet model.Photo 10: Leveling the dishwasher
Adjust the leveling pins with a wrench until the dishwasher is level (side to side) and water line (top to bottom).Photo 11: Attaching the dishwasher water supply line
Align the dishwasher water supply line so that it slides straight into the 90 degree joint. Screw on the compression nut (no Teflon tape required) and tighten with a wrench.Photo 12: Finishing sewers and electrical connections
Attach the dishwasher drain hose to the dishwasher. Then clamp the wires and connect them. Finally, screw the dishwasher to the bottom of the table.

For dishwasher installation, slide the new dishwasher (Photo 8) in, grasping the edges to avoid denting the front. Set the dishwasher into position as shown in pictures 9 and 10. But you haven’t secured it to the worktop. Wait until you have made all connections and settings.

Installing a dishwasher involves connecting copper water pipes so it doesn’t leak, which can be tricky. The trick is to line it up so it slides right into the threaded part of the elbow (image 11). If tilted to one side, the compression nut will not thread to the right and it will leak. If necessary, gently twist the elbow of the dishwasher with a wrench to align or slightly bend the copper lines approximately 8 to 12 inches from the end.

With the dishwasher water line, power cable, and drain connected, turn the water back on and check for leaks. Check the position again, then screw the dishwasher to the counter (a few screws in the cabinet wall). If your countertop is composite or stone and the old holes don’t line up, follow the instructions in the dishwasher’s installation manual.

Careful

If you have aluminum wiring, call a licensed electrician who is certified to work with it. This wiring has a dull gray color, not the typical dull orange color of copper.
