Don’t worry if you’re not the best at DIY, because we’ve compiled this handy guide for you, complete with step-by-step instructions to help you properly install your Kitchen Warehouse door hinge.

About Kitchen Cabinet Door Hinges

Before you get involved, we need to make sure you understand all the relevant sections so you know exactly what we’re talking about in the guide. We’ll talk about the most commonly used type of hinge, the European-style hinge, also known as a concealed hinge or a cup hinge.

These are much easier to install and adjust than traditional hinges, where you can spend hours fiddling with screws and hinge pins to get what you want. Concealed hinges require only one large bore and two small screw holes, one on each side of the hinge cup.

The standard hinge holes for these hinges are 35mm in diameter and approximately 10-12.5mm deep. They should be drilled or drilled approximately 100mm from the top or bottom of the door and 22-22.5mm from the side edge of the door to the center of the hole.

How many hinges does your kitchen cabinet door need?

While most standard kitchen doors require two hinges, one near the top and one near the bottom, the number of hinges your kitchen cabinet door needs depends on the size and weight of the swing door. If you don’t use the right amount of hinges or install them incorrectly, the door will sag and warp over time, damaging both the door and the cabinet frame.

The manufacturer’s instructions for each product will explain the number of hinges required and provide the correct number for the main door. Our standard sizeKitchen furniture720mm high x 600mm wide, requires a 715mm x 596mm door with two hinges per door. However, you should alwaysmeasure existing doorsbefore selecting alternatives to ensure you get the exact same size to fit the appliance, especially if your cabinet is custom made.

How to drill a hole in the kitchen door hinge?

when you orderKitchen cabinetsfrom the warehouse, they are usually pre-drilled for easy assembly, unless the door is directional and can only be installed one way. You then have the freedom to decide whether it is a right-opening or left-opening door and to drill the hinge hole yourself accordingly.

Our replacement doors, sold separately without the cabinet frame, are not pre-drilled for the same reason. Instead, we offer afree hinge drill setwith every purchasereplace the kitchen doorover £400 to make this process super easy for you.

Watch our video tutorial below to learn how to use this kit to drill the correct hinge hole in your new kitchen door.

If you can’t watch the video or want written instructions, we’ve helpfully saved it below so you can follow our instructions back and forth. First, here’s what’s in every Kitchen Warehouse hinged drill kit:

  • A light fixture
  • (to mark the position to be drilled)
  • A 2mm pilot drill.
  • 35mm hinge hole cutting machine.
  • (or the hinge is a bit boring)
  • Set of instructions

If you’ve never used a jig before, this will revolutionize the way you view DIY hinge hole drilling. This tool ensures that you perfectly position the hinge cup, both vertically and horizontally, at the correct depth for it to be flush with the door without accidentally drilling through the face of the door. At Kitchen Warehouse we usually place the center of the hinge 99mm from the edge of the door, so the center point of the fixture is also 99mm from the edge of the board.

In addition to this device, you will also need apenciland onedrill(and manualScrewdriverif preferred). You will also need asolid flat surfaceLarge enough to place each door as you drill holes. Proper use of the hinge hole cutter ensures that there will be no damage to the front of the door or the surface underneath.

Ready to start drilling hinge holes? Follow the steps below and your replacement door will be up and running in no time.

Instructions for drilling holes in kitchen door hinges

first)Decide if the door uses a base unit or a wall unit and will open from the left or the right (in the video the example used is a base unit door hung on the left). Mark the side of the hinge that needs to be continued with a pencil.

2)Take the fixture and lay the board on its side, along the edge of the door, making sure the bottom edge of the fixture is flush with the bottom (or top) edge of the door. The crosses marked on the fixture will now show you where to drill the pilot holes.

3)Place the 2mm drill bit in your hand drill, then lightly drill through the 3 drill bits to make pilot holes. This is merely a guide for later, so don’t drill too deep.

4)Repeat this process (step 2

5)Place the 35mm hinge hole cutter in your drill bit. The tip on it is the center locator, so place the tip up with the pilot hole in the center. Now carefully drill into the door until the tip of the round hinge hole cutter is level with the surface of the back of the door. Don’t overdo it – use gentle circular motions as shown in the video for a smoother listening break.

6)Remove the excess material from the hole, then remove the hinge and place the hinge cup into the recess to check that it is snug, flush with the door surface and with the hinge cup mounting holes. hinge aligned with the remaining 2 test holes.

7)Repeat this process (step 5

8)Your kitchen door replacement kit will come with a box containing the hinges, fixing plate, screws, rubber gasket and any handles you choose. Remove the 4 correctly sized screws for the hinge fixings (3.5mm x 16mm).

9)Place the hinge cup in the recess and make sure it lines up properly with the edge of the door and the pilot holes for the screws (you can use an angle finder or square frame to do this if You have one). Then use a drill or regular screwdriver to drive the screws into the hinge pins until you have completely secured the hinge to the back of the door.

Ten)Repeat step 9 for the hinge at the other end of the door, and you have it. Two kitchen door hinges were successfully installed with perfectly drilled hinge holes.

Once the hinges are in place, you can dust and glue the rubber seals on the inside of the door at the corners opposite the hinges.

You are now ready to attach the new hinged replacement kitchen doors to the cabinet frame.

Install a new kitchen cabinet door

To get started, you need to open and remove the old kitchen doors and any hinged cabinet panels. If your new door has the same dimensions and hinge position, you should be able to use the existing holes to install the new door.

To be sure, measure the same distance from the sides of the cabinet as the pilot holes from the edges of the new door and mark these points with a pencil. Check that the hinged panels align with these marks and that the door aligns vertically and horizontally with the sides of the cabinet frame. Use the corner bracket to make sure the marks are even.

Replace the kitchen door

Once you are sure the placement is correct, you can drill pilot holes inside the frame where the screws will go to secure the new door hinge. Depending on the type of hinge, you can then hold the door in the correct position and slide or clip the hinge into place on the mounting plates. You should at least two people do this together to avoid any accidents, especially for heavy doors or tall cabinet doors.

After pushing the hinge into place, use a screwdriver to tighten the mounting screws. Gently open and close the door to check that the door is snug, with no gaps or rubbing against other surfaces. If you have difficulty opening and closing the door or if it is too easy, you must adjust the door with the adjustment screws. This will allow you to slightly move the door up or down, left or right, closer or further from the cabinet frame. We also have avideo tutorialshow you how to do this.

Once you are happy with the fit of the door, you can repeat the process for your other kitchen doors, making sure to level the neighboring doors for straight, smooth lines. At Kitchen Warehouse we always useHettich Soft-Close Hingeto ensure the smooth and safe operation of each kitchen cabinet door, so that the end result will be very satisfactory.

Measure kitchen cabinet door handles

You need to leave the kitchen door handle until the end so that you can find the right height after installing the door firmly. Use low tack tape to mark where you want the handle to go, by holding the handle against the door and marking the desired top and bottom positions with a pencil and drawing lines on either side of the handle (on the tape, not on the surface of the door itself!). Remove the handle and use a ruler to draw a line through the center.

Measure in a straight line from the edges of the door to the centerlines at the top and bottom of your handle marks and draw small crosses to mark the points where the handle screws will go. To make sure this is correct, take your handle and measure the distance between the top and bottom screw holes, then apply that measurement to your masking tape handle markers. Hold the handle over the markers to check that the crosses line up with the holes and that the handle is at the desired height.

Install kitchen cabinet door handles

Now that you have the measurements to position your ideal doorknob, apply them to the rest of the new doors so that they all have the handles at the same height. Once you are sure that all of your crosses are correctly marked in the correct places, you can drill pilot holes through the doors at each of these points with your 2mm pilot drill bit.

Then use a 5mm drill bit to drill half of the door from the front and then half from the back for each hole. This will prevent splitting of the wood or damage to the finish on the front of the door. You can now remove the masking tape and put the screws in the holes from the back (inside the door). Hold the handle on the other side, so that the holes line up with the screws, and start screwing them in with a screwdriver until they tighten.

Test your new doors to see if you are happy with their location. If there is a protective film on the front of the door and the handle, you can now remove it. That’s it! The new kitchen cabinet doors are gorgeous and the whole kitchen has a whole new feel.
