Below is everything there is to know about sunflowers and their companions. Check it out!

Why use sunflower crops?

Why use sunflower companion plants?

Sunflowers grow on their own. You don’t need to care for them too much as long as you provide them with enough sun, quality soil, and adequate moisture.

But in this case, you are missing out on the benefits that sunflowers bring to other plants and vice versa. If you want to increase their chances of success, planting them with the right companions can increase your chances of having a beautiful and thriving sunflower.

Even better, companions can help attract pollinators and repel pests. This increases the chances of longevity of the sunflower.

Suffice to say, companion plants are always worth trying. If you want to build aflower bed, you’ll want to try them. Below you will find some of these companions.

The best companion plant for sunflower

We have found many different species that will grow with your sunflowers. We decided to talk about the 4 most popular ones and then give you a general idea of the rest you can try:

#1. Onion

Onions

Although very hardy, sunflowers can sometimes be damaged by pests and diseases. To avoid this, you can use preventive measures likeonion.

They share similar nutrients without harming each other. More importantly, onions have a strong smell and some chemicals, stag, and other mammals hate. This can be useful for sunflowers.

Additionally, the sunflower provides shade to the onion leaves and soil, helping them to grow safely at the right temperature. Similar to onions, garlic plantalso thrives with sunflowers.

#2. Tomato

Tomatoes

thetomatoThe plant is extremely fragile, especially against insects such as aphids. They eat both the stems and the leaves, which leads to yield losses. In the worst case, aphids can even kill tomato plants.

Guess who can help the tomato in this case? Yes, you guessed it right. Sunflowers are like a superhero becausetomato. They attract all aphids to their stems and flowers, keeping them away from the tomatoes.

Yesgrow together, sunflowers help tomatoes grow. And because tomatoes attract a number of pollinators, it’s a win-win.

#3. Courgette

Squashes

Vegetables like zucchini and squash canenjoy the sunflowers a lot. First, because sunflowers give them the shade these plants need to thrive. And second, because these plants are so dependent on pollinators. When the large leaves cover their flowers, they have trouble pollinating.

Sunflowers can help with both. As large flowers with dense stems, they provide enough shade for other plants. And with their bright yellow flowers, pollinators love to wander there.

If planted close enough, gourds can help keep maggots away from sunflower stems.

#4. Chili

Peppers

Another great companion for sunflowers ispepper. Since they also tend to have a lot of scale insects, they can feel down when they are alone. But when you plant them with sunflowers around, these aphids will leave the peppers alone.

However, this is still not enough. Sunflowers also prevent peppers from burning. Because most varieties of sunflowers are tall or bushy, they keep short-lived pepper plants from getting unwanted shade from the sun.

#5. Sweet corn

Sweetcorn

Corn is widely known as an underrated companion plant to sunflower. This seems counterintuitive, considering how quickly corn grows and how much nutrients it needs. But that’s no challenge for sunflowers.

When grown together, they share chemicals and other properties that improve the taste of corn. On top of that, sunflowers also attract certain pests that corn plants hate.

#6. Shade loving plants

Shade-Loving Plants

Any plant that thrives in shade can also make great sunflower companions. This is especially true for larger sunflower species with huge flowers. The flowers are usually large enough to cover large areas of land, including flowers that can be damaged by the scorching rays of the sun.

Among the species to consider, you can find:

  • Cucumber
  • kale
  • Salad
  • Melon

#7. Flowers

Flowers

Some of the most gorgeous flowers will also enjoy being with sunflowers. This is mainly because the large and bright flowers tend to attract many pests, keeping them away from the delicate flowers. When this happens, other flowers may thrive.

For example, if you are building a flower bed, planting sunflowers with other species can be a great idea (remember, it will look so much better!). Here are some flowers to consider:

  • Coreopsis
  • blueberries
  • Medicine
  • daylily
  • dead nettle
  • Iris
  • lantana
  • Lupine
  • Worry
  • Naturgenes
  • pink carnation
  • purple chrysanthemum
  • Periwinkle
  • Pink
  • Zinnias

You will find many other species that thrive alongside sunflowers. But if you want a failure-proof experience, stick with them.

#8. wine factory

Viny Plants

AllIvyYou might think it would make a wonderful sunflower companion. Why? Because sunflowers are usually wide and have thick stems. This size and girth makes them particularly structured for plants that like to climb and tie themselves around objects.

Among the different varieties of vines suitable for sunflowers, you will find:

  • Black-eyed Susan
  • Clematis
  • ivy
  • Grape
  • Moon flower
  • Spinach
  • nasturtiums
  • Decorative hops
  • Passion fruit
  • Pumpkin
  • Sweet Pea
  • Watermelon

Note that here you will find flowers, vegetables and fruits. All are suitable for sunflowers, especially those that need a lot of shade.

#9. Bean

Beans & Peas

While peas and beans can easily grow like vines, they benefit from sunflowers in entirely different ways – for example, most beans prefer the same soil as sunflowers. As long as the soil is slightly acidic (pH 6.5 to 7.5), both plants will thrive.

But more importantly, beans slightly increase the amount of nitrogen in the soil. This improves sunflower growth exponentially.

Some beans and peas to consider include:

  • Bush passed
  • green bean
  • lima bean
  • snow peas
  • snow peas
  • yellow beans

It should be mentioned that they all have different actions around the sunflower. That said, they all thrive.

#10. Shrubs

Shrubs & Ornamentals

Believe it or not, sunflowers make alandscape borderplant. For this reason, they can also work seamlessly with your shrubs, hedges and similar ornamental plants.

These include species such as:

  • Boxwood
  • common hibiscus flower
  • Cotoneaster
  • Hawthorn
  • Heuchera
  • Laurel
  • Yew
  • winter jasmine

The main benefit is that sunflowers keep these plants in tolerable shade as they grow. And as a side benefit, they help sunflowers fight off pests.

#11. Herbs

Herbs & Grasses

Finally, you should consider some simpler plants like grasses and herbs. They can benefit from the light shade of sunflowers while preserving soil nutrients. This is especially true for herbs, which often need protection from the sun. Grasses can positively affect soil chemistry.

Some species to consider are:

  • Basil
  • bermuda grass
  • centipede grass
  • chive
  • Kentucky bluegrass
  • lavender
  • land of perilla
  • mint
  • Rosemary
  • musk
  • Zoysia grass

Unlike other plants, almost all of these plants can grow very close to sunflowers without a problem. We recommend that theyherb gardenand yard.

Sunflower’s Worst Companion Plant

We’ve reviewed the best travel companions. But what about the worst? What plants do you absolutely need to grow as sunflowers to avoid damage?

first.Potato

Potato

Well, you’ll be glad to know that perhaps the only plant you should steer clear of isPotato. You read correctly.

The potato suffers from a sunflower disease: Verticillium dahliae. This disease fades and can affect the flowering season. For potatoes, this can prevent them from growing or producing yields.

If you’re growing potatoes near sunflowers, try to keep them a few feet apart. Not only for diseases, but beetles love the whole tree.

2.Green beans

Pole Beans

Sunflower chemicals can be harmful to some plants. But it’s not always the case. However, when it comes to green beans, it’s best to avoid planting them next to each other.

Beans are extremely difficult to grow and even sprout when planted with sunflowers. If you’re not careful, you can completely waste seeds or kill a mature plant.

Are sunflowers poisonous like companion plants?

We have already explained how sunflowers can become a special companion for many plants. But we also talk about how they can be harmful to others, like peas.

This happens because sunflowers are mildly poisonous. Their toxicity makes them dangerous for other plants, especially during their germination period.

And that’s because sunflowers make certain chemicals that live in the soil. These chemicals can harm other plants, inhibiting plant growth, especially during the germination phase.

The phenomenon is called allelopathy. It produces biochemicals which are sometimes good. But in large amounts, especially from the pods, it damages the soil and growing plants.

Types of sunflowers to plant

Are all sunflowers beneficial? Yes yes. But you will get completely different results depending on which type you choose. Watch:

first.Sunflower Lemon Queen (Helianthus ‘Lemon Queen’)

Lemon Queen Sunflower

Known for their slightly “lemon” color, these sunflowers are a little more bluish than other sunflowers. They are perennials and reach a maximum of about 5 feet.

What sets them apart is their ability to attract tons of pollinators. For plants that find it difficult to do so, the sunflower can become their favorite companion.

You can also find sunflowers filled with bees, butterflies, and even birds. Likewise, they catch most pests that feed on other plants.

2.Annual sunflower (Helianthus annuus)

Annual Sunflower

One of the largest flowers, the annual sunflower can reach around 10 feet in some cases. And of course they cover a lot of ground and provide a great amount of shade. This can be very useful for plants that need protection from the sun.

However, what sets them apart are their extremely sturdy stems and flowers. Because they attract all types of insects, they must be tough on them, especially aphids and maggots. And guess what, what they do.

This makes them exceptional companions for keeping pests away from other plants.

3.Willow-leaved sunflower (Helianthus salicifolius)

Willow-Leaved Sunflowers

One of the smallest types of sunflowers is the willow leaf flower. No more than 3 feet tall, these trees have uniquely bushy trunks with tons of falling leaves. To make them even more unique, the flowers are the smallest of all sunflowers.

The willow’s name comes from its “thick” hairy appearance. This makes them great shade trees, keeping most things around them cool and out of the scorching sun.

Interestingly, they also attract pollinators, making them excellent companions for hard-to-pollinate plants.

Inference

Beautiful and easy to grow, sunflowers make a delightful addition to any garden. But nothing like learning which plants to grow.

Withsunflowerabove, you will have fun with your sunflowers. So why not try them? There’s a lot to check out – so get your hands dirty now!

Many ornamental flowers and cut flowers are TOXIC. ALWAYS do your own research and take responsibility for the plants that you introduce around your kids, pets, and everyone else. Use common sense when handling plant materials: wear gloves, always wash hands, avoid contact with face, etc. NEVER consume any plant which has not been positively identified with complete certainty to be safe and edible. Before planting anything, research to determine whether specific flowers are considered invasive where you live or if there are laws that apply to their planting in your area.
