Multi-read content how to use a dowel screw

Have you just discovered dowel screws and want to learn more about their uses and applications? Then you have come to the right place!

Here is the quick answer. A dowel screw is used to connect wood to wood. One of their classic uses is to attach legs to chairs or tables.How to use them? Drill pilot holes at both ends of the screw; apply glue to add strength; use the appropriate tool to drive in a wooden driveway; attach the other piece to it.

Pretty simple isn’t it? Before we dive deeper into these steps, let’s learn more about dowel screws and what they are used for.

What is a dowel screw?

The pin screw is a grub screw with a conical head.Both ends are threaded and pointed so that they can be inserted into the pieces of wood to be assembled.. In the center of the screw, there is a small unreadable section, commonly referred to as “the ring”. This part is not always available, especially in small dowel screws.

Many diameters and lengths are available. The most common diameter sizes range from 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch. Lengths are more varied, usually starting at 3/4, up to 4 inches.

Choosing the right size is very important: Using a dowel screw that is too wide can weaken the surrounding wood as it will require a pilot hole that is too wide. A good rule of thumb here is to stay under half the stock width. If you are using plywood or softwood, you should use smaller dowel screws.

Their unique design makes the dowel screws perfect for a variety of projects, such as:

  • Craft furniture
  • . Bolt screws are usually made of stainless steel, which guarantees high durability. This makes them ideal for attaching legs to chairs, for example;
  • Manufacture of cabinets
  • . Among other things, I think the dowel screw is a very quick and convenient way to attach the handle. The results are always impeccable;
  • carpentry project
  • . What if you want to use dowel screws for outdoor constructions? Fortunately, the dowel screw is
  • galvanized
  • in most cases, therefore, they are moisture resistant and ideal for outdoor applications;
  • Any woodworking application that requires it
  • gaskets look clean
  • . Once installed, the dowel screw will be invisible.

Usually dowel screws are used to connect the legs to the table or chair. This is the kind of project we will discuss in the next paragraph.

How to use the dowel screw? Step by step instructions

If this is your first time working with dowel screws, you may be wondering how to use them because they don’t have a head. Don’t worry, it’s quite simple. It’s all about using the right tools. Be sure to follow the following steps to get the job done correctly.

1) Mark and prepare pilot holes

For best results, you shouldPre-drill the holes that will accommodate the dowel screws. Before you start drilling, mark the points you will be drilling under the table/chair top. Check all 4 points. While you’re at it, also connect between the pins where the other half of the pin screw will go.

Then you can start drilling.Be sure to use a drill bit with a smaller diameter than the lug screw. If the hole is larger or the same size as the screw, the back hole will not be able to stick to the wood. Another trick I use to get a stronger joint is to not drill so deep that the head of the screw has to engage the wood at the bottom of the hole. Consider usingwait stopor an alternative method to control the depth of your cut.

Make sure the holes are exactly perpendicular to the mating surface for best results.

2) Install the fixing screw

Now that the holes are ready, you can install the dowel screws. For maximum resistance, put a little glue before screwing. From a table top or chair top, usescrewdriver headto install the screw. If your dowel screw has an unread washer, drive it in until the threaded portion is fully inserted into the wood. If your dowel is fully threaded, carefully drive the dowel halfway into the wood.

What if you don’t have the right screwdriver head?if your dowel hasn’t been read in the center, you can use it to screw the dowel into the part with a pair of pliers. If your project allows, screw one piece by hand until you can’t, then screw the two pieces together. The screw will feed itself.

You can also insert the dowel screw directly into the drill. Some threads will be slightly messed up in the project; you can always drive the screw in anyway.

3) Installing the chair/table leg

Then you install the table/chair legs. If you haven’t done so already, prepare a pilot hole in the mating surface and add some glue to it. Be sure to remove all sawdust before doing this. Finally, push the foot into the latch screw until it tightens. Leave to sit until the glue dries. Then you can enjoy your finished project.

Dowel screw vs suspension bolt: which one to choose?

At first glance, the bolt screw and hanger pin look very similar. In fact, they are quite different. And their applications too.

As mentioned earlier, dowel screws come with an offset, wood thread on both sides, for wood-to-wood applications.

On the other hand,hanging bolts come with a screw head that goes into the wood on one side and a bolt head on the other. That way, anything that comes with an appropriately sized hole can be connected to it. For example, look at the image above: hanger bolts are used to attach pipes to wooden studs. In general, they are ideal for overhead applications. They are also useful if you want to build a percussion table or if you need to attach a metal frame to wood.

In summary,stud screws are great for woodworking projects, while hook bolts are needed when you want to connect something with a threaded insert in wood.

Epilogue

In this quick article, you learned about dowel screws and how to use them. We also talked a bit about hanger bolts, a solid alternative to dowel screws when the application calls for it.

You can see,Using dowel screws is a fairly simple process. It is important to make the pilot holes correctly. If they are positioned correctly and the holes are perfectly perpendicular to the surface to be contacted, then you are 90% done.
