Multi-read content how to tell if your hot water heater is bad

Hot water is easy to take for granted – until you run out. Fortunately, water heaters rarely stop working without warning. That’s why it’s important not to ignore the signs that your water heater is leaking. You can avoid discomfort, leaks or unexpected breakdown costs if you learn to spot the signs that your water heater is about to fail.

What causes the water heater to rupture?

Before diving into the warning signs given off by your water heater, you need to understandparts inside your unit. Traditional water heaters have a water tank surrounded by protective liners. In the center is a pipe that surrounds the burners to heat the water. They can be configured differently depending on whether they run on electricity or gas. An anode rod attracts corrosive particles to extend the life of the device.

Water heaters generally have a lifespan of 10 to 15 years. Several factors contribute to the cause of a water heater leak. Anode rods are used occasionally. Metal tanks can corrode or leak. The heating elements are damaged or stop working. Sometimes you can replace a part. But if your water heater continues to leak, it’s best to replace the entire unit, especially if your current unit has been running for 10 years or more.

Signs your water heater is about to break

Learning to know if your water heater is leaking can save you money and hassle. “But how do I know if my water heater is broken?” you might wonder. By heeding the following common signs that your water heater will fail soon, you can avoid the worst-case scenario.

signs your water heater is going to fail

1. Radiator water leak

Leaks are a sign that your water heater is failing. You may see water draining from the tank or pooling under the unit. Or you can see pipes dripping with water.

Valves may not be fully closed or connections may be loose. These components may require tightening or replacement, which are easy repairs. However, if the tank is leaking, you have no choice but to replace your water heater.

2. Age of the water heater

If your device is old, beware. Most companies affix a label with the installation date. If it’s missing, you can get the brand name and serial number of the device and go online to find the date of manufacture.

Buying a new water heater can save you money. ENERGY STAR ® appliances are extremely efficient, heating water faster with less energy. Another benefit is that newer units can take up less space.

3. Run out of hot water quickly

If you don’t drain the hot water regularly or if there is a lot of dirt in the water, these particles can settle in the tank. Scale buildup leaves less room for hot water, so you drain it quickly. This is a clear sign that your water heater is broken.

If the condition is not repaired for too long, it may no longer be possible to drain the scale from the appliance and you could clog and corrode the valve. Then you will need to replace the device. And if so, you might want to consider ano tank compared to a traditional water heater.

4. Improper water temperature in the shower

Another obvious sign that your water heater is leaking is that your water temperature is not correct. With any luck, you might have a problem with the thermostat and possibly replace the thermostat. If the heating elements fail, you have a bigger problem.

Again, consider the age of your unit. May becheaper to replaceand enjoy the savings you get from aenergy saving water heater.

5. Color-changing water comes out of the faucet

Cloudy or rusty water is another common sign that your water heater is failing. Water heaters have a coating that slows corrosion, but it doesn’t last forever. Once the coating begins to thin, rust quickly forms.

A water leak is one way to tell if your water heater is broken. It is not necessarily harmful to health but can discolor appliances and damage their parts. And it sure won’t taste good. If the problem is minor, replacing the anode rods can extend the life of your device. Consider unloading it.

6. Unusual noise coming from the water heater

If your water heater is making strange noises, it could be a sign that your water heater is broken. That’s bad news, but it could mean something else too. Sediment and mineral deposits can clog your system. You may have poor water flow or variable water pressure in your home. Or the valve and connection may be loose.

Hire a professional to clean your system and test it. They will let you know if these noises are a sign of a broken water heater or just a reminder to have it repaired.

7. Lower the water pressure

If your home has low water pressure, sediment will build up faster. thedifference between hard water and soft wateris also a factor, as hard water will clog the system faster than soft water. If you are experiencing low water pressure from your faucet, you may be experiencing significant buildup in your water heater and connections.

Again, this is one of the signs that your water heater is broken, but it can also be a sign that you need service. If you take care of it early, you can prolong the life of your device.

Troubleshooting water heaters

The signs that your water heater is leaking should not be ignored. If you come across even one of them, be on the lookout, have your system professionally serviced, and start budgeting and buying a spare. And if you need to buy a new water heater, consider a performance upgrade. ENERGY STAR® certified units and othersenergy saving devicecan help you save energy and lower your energy bills.

Your water heater is a very important appliance in your home. Many people may not even think about their water heater until the hot water is gone. The last thing we would want is for you to wake up to a cold shower, or a flooded home from a broken water heater. Here are a few signs that may indicate your water heater needs to be replaced.

Recovery Time

Is your water heater keeping up with the needs of your family? We have four children, and when we all want to shower or bath around the same time, we often run out of hot water. The recovery time is measured by how long it takes to heat the water up after all the water is used from the water heater. If it takes a while or if it is running out of hot water frequently, then that may indicate a problem.

Strange Noises

Have you ever heard strange noises from your water heater? You may not unless you are close to your water heater when it turns on. Listen closely and if you hear crackling, bubbling or popping noises, that could indicate that your tank is getting full of sediment. This can be harmful to a water heater, causing it to not heat the water properly. When this happens, the water heater over works and it causes unnecessary, extra stress on your water heater.

Life Expectancy

Water heaters typically last 8-10 years. If your water heater is getting in this age range, you may notice some of the symptoms above. At this age it’s best to consider replacing it if these symptoms are occurring.

To keep your water heater running safely and efficiently, we suggest an annual water heater safety check. Our friendly, certified technicians are trained to effectively test and maintain your water heaters for optimal performance. They recommend installing a water sensor by your water heater to alert you of any flooding.
