Cast Iron Pipe Repair: Instructions

Old cast iron pipes scare homeowners. Because they last so long without a problem, most people ignore them. But you do so at your own risk. All cast iron pipes eventually break, corrode or leak. And when they do, it’s usually a leak from the cast iron seal.

Most cast iron drainpipes are joined at the shaft and bell tube joints, sealed with molten lead and a rope-like material called oakum. If water is leaking from such a joint, here is what you should do.

1. Lead Matching Service

  • Use a hammer and
  • cold turbidity
  • to mix the conductor inside the concentrator.
  • If that doesn’t work, measure the length of the oak tube twice the circumference of the tube and tamp it evenly inside the tree with the tip of an old sealant or screwdriver.

cast iron pipe repair of joint - step 1Since the lead is flexible enough to reshape the weak point, this simple process joins the joint.

2. Prepare new caulking

  • Cold hardening compounds and “lead resin” replaced molten lead as a binder for cast iron gaskets.
  • Measure the length of the rope adhesive compound twice the circumference of the pipe and cut it with a sharp knife.
  • Place the length on a clean, dry surface and dampen (but don’t soak!) it with water. Use a clean brush or paint sprayer.

cast iron pipe repair of joint - step 2

3. Tamp the joint

  • Apply a few inches of the moistened mixture to the joint at a time.
  • Then use hammer and iron to stamp it.
  • Continue adding and gluing the fabric several inches at a time until the entire length has wrapped into the seam.
  • Wait at least six hours for the compound to harden before using the drain pipe (it’s best to leave the house during this time to make sure no one is using the toilet etc.).
  • If using “plastic lead” (an alternative binding material), it should be mixed with water and applied to the joint with an old scraper or screwdriver. Once done, as in the previous step, wait six hours before using it.

cast iron pipe repair of joint - step 3The key to this final step is to gently but firmly press the moistened compound into the joint. Do not rush this process, or you will destroy your frozen compound.

Epilogue

Those old cast iron pipes, most commonly found in old houses, looked terrifying. That, and because they last so long without a problem, is probably why owners are often too afraid to deal with them. But eventually they break, corrode or leak. And usually from cast joints.
