Ink is still difficult to clean off many types of surfaces. Ink is usually made from a number of different chemicals, and you have to be very careful how you use it. Otherwise, chances are you’ll end up with ink on the surface you don’t want.

Ballpoint pen ink, fountain pen ink, or other inks often go to the worst places. No matter how careful and diligent you are in keeping that place neat and clean, there is always the risk of a minor accident causing ink to splatter all over the surface.

It is equally difficult to remove ink stains from clothing; you have to wash them again and again and you have to be very careful to keep them away from other clothes in the house. However, what are you going to do with the plastic? Removing ink stains from plastic is extremely difficult.

If you put ink on a plastic surface in your home, you will seriously damage it. For example, the ink in a permanent marker is designed to be extremely hard and stubborn, and you won’t be able to rub the stain off.

More importantly, rubbing is not really recommended as it can also damage the plastic surface.

Now, if you search online, you’ll find a bunch of different cleaners that can do the job well. However, you should be aware that some of the more common cleaners on the market, such as acetone, can permanently damage plastic surfaces.

This is why cleaning plastic surfaces is more complicated than imagined; you need to make sure that you use a variety of techniques to fix the problem.

In the next few paragraphs, we’ll talk about the different ways you can use to remove ink stains from plastic surfaces.

1 – Use a dry erase pen

Dry Erase Markers on Dry Erase Board

The first and arguably the easiest method you can use to remove ink stains from plastic is to use a dry erase marker.

The dry-erase pen is designed for exceptional removal of ink smudges from a variety of surfaces. Remember that the color doesn’t really matter, although it’s always better to choose a darker colored marker.

Ideally, this method works best when trying to clean dry erase boards. More importantly, it is also completely safe to use on smooth plastic surfaces.

Keep in mind that this method doesn’t work well on textured surfaces, but you can always use another strategy which we’ll cover later.

Simply take a dry erase marker and draw on the stain. Be sure to only cover the stain as you don’t want other parts of the plastic surface to be affected. If the plastic surface is clean, you can comfortably paint over the stain without any problems.

Once you’ve comfortably painted over the stain, the next step is to let the stain sit for a few minutes. Finally, you take a soft towel to soak your hands in and then rub it over the surface. The solvent will remove the ink from the plastic surface. In some situations, the ink will not be completely removed.

Instead, some lines and spots will remain. Instead of using dry marker over and over again (it won’t work anymore), you should consider using glass cleaner.

Glass cleaner is also very effective at removing stains, especially those that have been weakened by ink on plastic.

2 – Magic erasers

Melamine Sponge - Magic Eraser

As the name suggests, Magic Eraser Sponges are designed to remove ink from uncertain surfaces.

Luckily, magic sponges are readily available and you can easily find them in the cleaning department of your local grocery store. They are usually white and have a shape similar to a small brick.

We always recommend buying a simple magic eraser. Don’t buy one that has additives like bleach. Then you need to cut the sponge into small pieces. Use a simple household knife to cut the sponge into small pieces.

A larger sponge is always difficult to work with and you will find it much easier with smaller pieces on hand.

Then you need to soak the sponge in a little water. If you’ve tried other methods and haven’t been able to remove the stain, you may consider replacing the water with rubbing alcohol.

After soaking the sponge, simply use a circular motion to rub the stain until it is completely gone.

Remember that this requires some patience on your part; All of this will take at least five to ten minutes of scrubbing before you can see results.

3 – Alcohol consumption

Bottle of Hand Sanitizer

Another good option for you when cleaning stains from plastic surfaces is to use rubbing alcohol.

Acetone, hand sanitizer, or even rubbing alcohol are all helpful, but be careful when using acetone. The chemicals in marker inks can be dissolved using any of these chemicals, but there are some advantages and limitations. Let’s talk about these:

By far, rubbing alcohol is the safest substance you can use. However, the effectiveness of rubbing alcohol is very low and you will probably have to use it several times before you can remove the stain properly.

Ideally, you should avoid buying diluted rubbing alcohol. Always buy rubbing alcohol with a higher percentage. For example, you should buy at least 90% alcohol, if not more.

If you need to spot clean a curved surface, like a bowl, you should consider using hand sanitizer. Unlike rubbing alcohol, hand sanitizer is a bit more viscous and therefore has a much better shape-holding ability.

You’ll notice that the hand sanitizer doesn’t drip around the edges either, so you should consider using it around curved surfaces.

Nail Polish and Acetone - Nail Polish Remover

Then finally we have acetone. It is said to be the most effective and potent of the substances here. Acetone-based cleaners can remove stains from plastic without any problem.

However, you should be aware that acetone can also melt some surfaces. Therefore, it’s ideally not a wise choice to use on softer plastic surfaces, nor should you consider using it on painted surfaces.

If you have no other choice and all other options fail, you should always try to test it on a visible area first. Simply dampen a polishing cloth in an acetone-based cleaner, then dab the area.

Leave it there for a few minutes before quickly removing it. Use another cloth to clean everything.

The plastic may discolor or, in some cases, warp. This goes to show that using acetone is not a good idea at all and one should instead choose a milder substance like rubbing alcohol.

However, if the plastic holds its shape and isn’t discolored, you can try using it on painted surfaces to see what results it produces.

Never forget to put on rubber gloves before deciding to come into contact with such harsh substances. First, you need to protect your skin.

4 – Baking soda and toothpaste

Toothpaste Tube With White Toothpaste

Finally, we have the technique of teeth whitening with baking soda and toothpaste. Baking soda and toothpaste are both common items found in homes almost anywhere in the world.

You’ll need one part baking soda and one part toothpaste, so it’s important that you gather supplies before proceeding.

Always use all-white toothpaste (do not use colored toothpaste). You should avoid using gel toothpaste. The whiter type is more abrasive and tends to remove stains more than the gel type.

Remember that this method uses an abrasive technique to remove stains, so it’s definitely not the right choice for use on painted surfaces. This can cause significant damage and even strip the paint completely.

Mix the two and you will get a thick paste. Simply spread the mixture on the stain and then rub it into the stain for a few minutes.

You should use a sponge to rub gently to ensure that the stain has been completely removed. Once done, you can rinse it completely to see if the stain has been removed.

These are just a few of the simple methods you can use to remove ink stains from plastic surfaces.
