How to Paint Furniture: A Beginner's Guide

Hello friends! While retooling furniture can take time and effort, it’s worth it when you see the results and know you’ve created a custom piece of furniture for your home. Today I am sharing an easy tutorial on how to paint furniture.

This is a very basic “beginner’s guide” – or Draw Woodwork: 101. (See the end of this article for video tutorials on my YouTube channel!)

How to Paint Furniture: A Beginner’s Guide

About the Guide

Although I learned a lot about painting and refinishing furniture, I wasn’t always so knowledgeable. I’ve done a few paintings for my house, and most of us have done it completelyERROR! I know it sounds as simple as that – just grab a brush and paint, right? Is not!

If you want a professional looking finish that will last(that’s the key – you don’t want it to start chipping and flaking), then there are a few rules you need to follow.

While there are many techniques for redecorating furniture, today I will only cover the absolute basics of painting. I realize that some of my readers are veterans of painting on wood, but many of you are not. This guide applies to real wood furniture – I’ll talk about laminate paint another time.

Alright, let’s get to work.

Origin of the project:

  • Murphy Oil Soap
  • Medium sandpaper
  • Fine sandpaper
  • Garnish
  • Spandex
  • Paint
  • Brush
  • foam roller
  • spray paint
  • (Optional)
  • Coating (I like
  • MinwaxPolycrylic
  • and
  • Finishing wax
  • . I like that too
  • Minwax Satin Erasable Poly
  • for colored parts.)

HOW TO PAINT THE INTERIOR

Step 1: Prepare, prepare, prepare!

First, prepare your things. You can’t just put on a coat of paint and call it a day. It will flake and crumble and it won’t last.

The first thing I like to do before painting an object is to give it a thorough cleaning (after removing the hardware, of course), especially if it’s lying around in a dusty garage or storage room.Murphy Oil Soapworks well and is safe for furniture.

Remove all drawers before painting and work them separately.

Step 2: Sand

Next, sand your furniture and buff all the finishes so the paint has a good surface to “stick” to.Medium sandpaperIt’ll be OK. (I use a fine grit between coats of paint.)

If you’re painting rather than staining, there’s no need to strip the finish or sand the bare wood. Just remove the glossy coating. If the surface is already dull, you can skip this step.

Step 3: Prime Minister

Once your furniture is dry and dust free, apply a primer. This helps your paint adhere better to the piece and also covers any stains or discoloration in the wood. I appreciateKILZ primerand they also offer it in spray form (which I haven’t tried, but plan to!). I’ve heard a lot of good things about it. Oil-based finishes are also great for furniture.

Step 4: Sand again

Then sand again! Using a fine sandpaper, lightly sand the central partALL ONLYcoat of paint. This helps you achieve a much more even and professional finish.

Be sure to remove sanding dust every time—spandexworks well.

Removing dust from sanded furniture with a tack cloth.

Step 5: Paint

Now that you’re prepped and ready, it’s time to paint. For furniture, I use interior latex paint, usually in a semi-gloss finish. I recommend anything that isn’t a flat finish. (It will show fingerprints and holes and be harder to clean.) The glossier the finish, the easier it is to clean.

Paint in thin layers, and I’ll repeat:sand between each layer! This step is important if you want to achieve an even finish. I usually paint a total of 2-3 coats.

Now there are several ways to paint. You can use aspray paint, or even regular spray paint (just get the right brand!), brush or roller. I usually use the small foam roller on key furniture and brush into hard to reach crevices, combing out the crevices first. The roller helps prevent lines from being visible.

Step 6: Protect

Once your last coat of paint has dried for at least 24 hours, you’re ready to reapply. (Or you can leave it alone and let it cure for about 30 days. But if you’re going to do that, then seriously, leave it alone and don’t touch it!)

Sealing your furniture provides an extra layer of protection to your paint finish and also creates a washable and easy to clean surface. If you are using white paint or an extremely light color, I strongly recommend that you DO NOT use polyurethane to paint your finish. It may yellow over time. Over any other paint it should be fine, and I recommendMinwax Erasable Polybecause it’s super easy to use. (I like to finish with Satin.)

I really like using water-based topcoats like Minwax Polycrylic. Cleaning is easier and there is not much smoke.

Another option that I love that can be used on any color, including white leather, is furniture wax.Minwax Finishing Waxit’s amazing and I’ve heard good things about other brands as well. You just wipe it off (I use a cheesecloth to apply it), let it dry for 10-15 minutes, then buff it with a clean cloth until you get the shine you want . . This is what I used on my wardrobe.

After sealing your stuff, I recommend letting it sit for a day or two before using or touching it. It would be a shame if you had to deal with it too soon to undermine all that hard work!

Applying furniture paste wax with a cheesecloth.

Add your gear and you’re done! You can also edit this section if you wish, or leave it as is. The makeup artist in the photo only hurts a little when she uses fine sandpaper. I suffer from it after the last coat of paint and before waxing.

Paint has incredible power to transform any job. Here are some pictures I drew:
