3 different sounding Wind Chimes Hanging On a Porch

When choosing how to decorate your patio, deck or porch for an outdoor lifestyle this summer, don’t forget to add a sound element to the operation of the wind chime. Think it all looks the same? Think. How to choose the right sound and design will add a relaxing effect of energy and ambiance to your outdoor living space.

It’s May now and the weather in most parts of the country is warming up, life is moving beyond my lakeside patio.

This year more than ever, making the most of any space, including the outdoors, big or small, in our best ways, has taken on new meaning.

One thing I love about being on deck is hearing the wind chimes I have hung from the sliding glass door in the galley.

Many of you commented on them after Ishared a video tour of my housetwo months ago and they could be heard. I love the sound of wind chimes so much that I even make it the ringtone on my phone. 🙂

Wind chimes are popular decorations on patios, porches, and even gardens. They also play an important role that many of us overlook when creating a relaxing outdoor space. They add a positive effect to the energy and ambiance of the living space.

My love of wind chimes started the first spring after we moved in together. I was sitting on the deck and heard the sound of many wind chimes in the distance. They sound very good. A special sound calls me.

Before, I always felt that wind chimes were loud and un-relaxing.

So I went to my neighbor’s house to see if she had a wind chime ringing me to go.

It was a fine silver metal wind chime with a colored stone clip and a circular silver sail/collector. I bought one for myself. It’s pictured above with the ceramic bell on it.(The ceramic bell does not come with a bell, but a bell that had a gong, but it broke. Instead of throwing the bell away, I hung the bell from there.))

The following spring, I walked into the hardware store near my house and heard the wind chimes on display blowing in the breeze outside the store and called me back to the store again.

It has a completely different sound – deeper and more resonant than the one I bought earlier. I found it so peaceful and serene. It was a brass bell with a turquoise windcatcher/butterfly veil made by the same company as my first bell.Woodstock My butterfly chime.

Do all wind chimes sound the same?

Think all wind chimes are the same? They don’t. The sound can be completely different from metal, to the hollow sound of bamboo, to large musical scale tuning tubes – like the wind playing an instrument.

  • The easiest way to find the perfect sounding wind chime is to visit a garden or outdoor supply store and listen to the wind chimes on display.
  • If you don’t have this option, you can check this
  • sound room
  • online to listen to sound clips of various wind chimes.

What to look for when buying a wind chime?

When purchasing a wind chime, there are a few things to keep in mind: number of tubes, length of pipe, type of clamp, and weight of sail/wind catcher mounted at the bottom .

  • The number of tubes in a wind chime determines the number of musical notes it can produce. Multi-tube wind chimes have the ability to combine more sounds and create different harmonies. Wind chimes with fewer tubes have a better sound range.
  • The finish of the pipe on the wind chime only affects the decorative style, for many of us as important as the sound.
  • The overall length of the wind chime determines the tone and depth of the sound. Longer wind chimes produce a lower, fuller sound, while shorter wind chimes produce higher pitched sounds.
  • The clamping part of the wind chime is the part that comes into contact with the tubes. The contacts are carefully calculated to provide the best sound possible.
  • The size of the wind chime sail / wind catcher hanging below the tubes will determine the amount of wind required to produce the wind chime sound. Most wind chimes are designed to start chirping in a six to ten mph breeze. The heavier the sail/windcatcher, the more sound is produced.

Bell in metal, bamboo or glass wood?

Popular material choices for wind chimes are metal, bamboo, ceramic, and glass. I like metal bells, but you might like the sound of a different material.

MetalWind chimes are the most popular due to their durability and high tuning accuracy. Only metal wind chimes can be set to specific tones and notes.

  • Metal wind chimes come in a variety of melodies and can even be tuned to popular songs and themes. The metal wind chimes are also waterproof and rustproof. You don’t have to worry about them chipping or losing their beauty, so they’ll last a long time.

BambooWind chimes are not as durable as metal wind chimes. The timbre of the bamboo wind chime is hollow, deep and resonant. Although not adjustable, these wind chimes can make relaxing sounds like rain or eerie drumming.

  • Choose a bamboo wind chime for a natural and eco-friendly stress reliever, with a melody that will soothe the soul.
  • As bamboo is a natural and lightweight material, cracks can occur and affect sound quality over time.

Ceramic, Glass and ShellWind chimes are often chosen for their decorative style and color rather than because their sound can range from a soft jingle to a loud jingle.

Where to hang wind chimes

I find the position of the wind chime to be very important. Most well-built wind chimes are tuned to start “chilling” at wind speeds between 6 and 10 mph. If you place them in a place where there is too much wind, the sound of the wind chime may not be attractive.

  • Hang the bell where the wind blows in as many directions as possible. An open corner is ideal for hanging bells from a building. Try hanging bells at different heights.
  • I chose to hang the wind chimes in groups in the opening next to the kitchen door for more visual impact, as I do indoors with decorative accessories. I also put them here so I can hear them inside the house when the doors and windows are open.
  • Avoid hanging your bell within two feet of a wall or too close to trees, furniture, and anything that might obstruct or redirect the wind. If you have a covered porch, you may find that even the screens will block the breeze enough to keep your bells from ringing.
  • Try hanging bells in different places at different times of the year. The prevailing winds change with the seasons. If you have a collection of wind chimes, you can create your own soundscape.

Experiment with the bells you have. My bell hangs on the lake side of the house. There they have the added benefit of alerting us to changes in wind direction and incoming weather conditions!

The kind of wind chimes I want to add to my collection

I love my three bells, but if one breaks, my next wind chime purchase will be one of them.Corinthian Bells®tuned to the musical scale.I love the sound of this watch.

How to hang a wind chime

When hanging a wind chime, hang it directly from the “O” ring or the ring at the top of the bell. Do not extend the top string of the bell by adding ropes or strings. This can cause the entire bell to wobble when only the center wire and clamping unit are moved.(I didn’t follow this advice for the lighthouse bell and it wobbles, but I like the visuals of its length.)

To hang my collection of bells:

  • I drilled a small hole in the underside of the roof, then screwed in the heavy hooks. I put the “O” ring on the hook. To make sure they were in place, I wrapped the rope around the hooks and loops.

Other suspension options:

  • You can attach a
  • elegant tree hangers
  • wall or tree in your garden and hang a wind chime on it.
  • If you want to hang a wind chime in your garden to scare birds away, hang it somewhere
  • Shepherd hook.

How to extend the life of your wind chime

  • To enjoy your wind chimes for many years, hang them in a location that will not be exposed to direct sunlight for long periods of time.
  • Wipe the bell occasionally with a damp cloth to remove any buildup or mildew.
  • Bring a weather bell. Store in a place protected from high temperatures such as a garage or warehouse.
