Check aperture

  1. Check the general condition of the door opening.
  2. Determines whether the frame’s opening width is consistent from top to bottom.
  3. Note: If not, the inconsistent gaps are due to incorrect frame settings. Poor framing will cause serious door and hardware problems. These types of situations may require extensive repairs in the field and may result in the need to be pulled out of the wall to access the anchor frame. This manual does not cover improper installation of the frame.
  4. Evaluate play to determine where incorrect play is occurring.
  5. Clearance issues are sometimes caused by loose or missing screws. Open the door to make sure it has all the screws and that they are tight. If screws are loose and cannot be tightened, thread locking material can be used to secure them.
  6. Check that all hinges are the same size and that heavy hinges are not confused with standard hinges.
  7. For heavy duty hinge applications, ensure that the reinforcements have been modified to properly accept heavy hinges.

See the SDI User’s Guide atdoor installationor consult the door manufacturer for more information on converting standard-weight hinge braces to heavy-duty hinge braces.

The following problems can be overcome by placing metal wedges at specific locations.

  1. The door opening is too tight on the top latch side of the opening.
  2. The door opening is too tight on the lower latch side of the opening.
  3. The whole door is moved too far towards the hinge of the opening.
  4. The entire door has moved too far toward the opening lock.

The door gap is too tight on the top lock side of the opening

Place the shims between the hinge leaf and the door in the bottom and middle hinges. This will move the top half of the door up.

Shipping Steps:

  1. Open the door and place a wooden support or wedge under the door to relieve stress.
  2. Starting at the bottom hinge, first remove the hinge screws on the door and insert the spacer between the hinge leaf and the door.
  3. Reattach the hinge leaf to the door with screws.
  4. Repeat editing at the middle hinge position. This will move the top half of the door up, adjusting the clearance around the perimeter.
  5. Remove the wooden support or block under the door, close the door and check if the ventilation problem is solved. If not, add additional shims as needed in the same places, making sure to maintain the threaded connection of the hinge.

The door opening is too tight on the lower latch side of the opening

Place the shims between the hinge leaf and the door at the top and center of the hinge. This will move the bottom half of the door down.

Entire door moves too far toward the hinge of the door opening

Place shims between the hinge leaf and the door in all hinge positions. This will move the door towards the lock.

Entire door moves too far toward the lock of the opening

This latter problem can be overcome by deepening the hinge leaf into the door or frame, causing the door to move closer to the hinge face.

Close the door and check if the customs clearance problem has been solved.

The procedures in the manual are only a guide for fixing the openings in the door. Please follow all applicable building codes, codes and accepted practices specific to your geographic location.
