All circuits use paths to transmit power from the control panel to the service area. A short circuit occurs when power is diverted to a shorter path to the source instead of the intended service area.

What exactly is the cause of the short circuit? Current will naturally take the path of least resistance, so loose or broken wires can create shorter paths. This prevents the current from reaching its destination and causes it to loop into a new short circuit. For example, current is often forced into a path through a rubber sleeve. If the rubber sleeve is broken or damaged, current may flow to the nearest metal or conductor. This phenomenon often leads to tripping of the circuit breaker.

How to Find a Short Circuit in Your Home

If you suspect this is happening in your home’s electrical system, follow these steps to find the source of a short circuit:

  1. First, you will need a multimeter. Although this device tests voltage, it can also test continuity. By checking the power at both ends of the wire, you can tell if you have a short circuit. Before testing, set your multimeter function to continuous mode.
  2. Take the negative probe (black probe) and place it on the end of the wire whose continuity you want to test. Use the positive probe (red probe) on the other end of the wire and wait for a beep to signal continuity.
  3. If there is no beep, there is no electricity running through the wire. If there is a beep, check the display on your multimeter for at least 0.3 ohms. If the number is smaller, you may miss.

In this video I will show you how to use the SureTrace™ Circuit Tracer to find a short in a circuit. The tracer can locate the origin of a ground fault or dead short in a circuit that is causing circuit breakers to trip, fuses to blow and current leaking on the ground conductor.

In this video I will show you how to use the Suretrace circuit tracer from Ideal to find a short in an electrical circuit.

The tracer can locate the origin of a ground fault or dead short in a circuit that is causing circuit breakers to trip, fuses to blow and current leaking on the ground conductor.

Step one is to determine which conductors are shorted in the circuit. The short can be between the hot and neutral, hot to ground, or neutral to ground. The first two conditions will most likely trip a circuit breaker the last condition with a short between neutral and ground may not and may be the cause of nuisance tripping depending on what is plugged into the circuit.

To do this you will need to disconnect all appliances on the circuit. Trip the breaker and disconnect the neutral conductor in the electrical panel and using a continuity tester determine which of the conductors are shorted together in the circuit.

If the fault is between the hot and neutral or hot and ground conductors reconnect the neutral conductor and connect one lead of the transmitter to the hot conductor and the other lead to ground using the connecting leads and individual alligator clip adapters supplied.

I don’t have an example of what that might look like in the field but here is a made up example on my bench top. I have created a short between the hot and ground conductors here in the metal conduit.

Step two is simply plug the transmitter into the 1st outlet using the outlet plug adapter. Keep in mind that in commercial work usually you are dealing with a metal conduit that is grounded so you cannot find a short in the middle of a conduit run since the conduit is blocking most of the signal. And if the signal finds its way onto the metal conduit, finding a change in signal strength is essentially impossible. However if the conduit is doing its job and protecting the wires the short generally happens in one of the electrical boxes. If the conductors are in a buried PVC conduit the short can be about anywhere along the length of PVC pipe and can be traced with no problems.

Step three turn on the receiver and adjust the sensitivity to about the middle range and place it close to the transmitter to check that it is picking up signal. The signal strength the receiver indicates will vary with the orientation of the antenna to the wires being traced. Holding the receiver flat against the face of a receptacle and rotating it shows a strong signal at each of these electrical boxes. When I do the same to box number five you’ll see the signal has dropped off dramatically. So I would suspect the short is somewhere in the between these two boxes.

If the wires are in PVC pipe or buried in the ground continue following the highest rating until the signal starts weakening. This is the point of the fault as the signal flows to ground instead of continuing strongly down the conductor. Reduce the sensitivity range and use the nose of the receiver to pinpoint the location of the fault.

For a short condition between the neutral and ground conductors. Disconnect the neutral conductor at the panel and connect one lead of the transmitter to the neutral conductor and the other lead of the transmitter to ground using the alligator clip adapters. Then repeat steps one and two.
