Multi-read content how to drill a straight hole in wood

Of course, every now and then you choose to intentionally drill a hole at a particular angle. Maybe your laminate installation needs it or you’re looking for a sleek, modern look for a project.

But most of the holes we drill – I dare say 99% of them are good – are meant to be drilled straight, perfectly perpendicular to the surface. You can do this precisely with a drill press, but many manufacturers don’t have this drill and they require a specific setup and the job is small enough to fit on a table.

Here is the cordless drill. A tool, when balanced over a drill bit, can easily be smoothed and squared in all directions, especially when you put some force into it.

Corn! The task is not impossible. Well, DIYers, you can drill a perfect 90° hole with a cordless drill. Here’s how it’s done.

First, set yourself up for success.

When you need to drill a perfect 90° hole, you have to worry about the angle of the bit and the bit and nothing else. So to make it easier for you, always make sure to make a small starting divot with an awl so your drill has a place on the ground. This way your bit position is set and you can worry about other moving parts.

Trading Options

Milescraft drillis a simple and super practical helper made exactly for this task. It only costs $8 and helps you make perfect square holes in 1/16″ increments from 1/8 to 1/2″.It is a very good valueand if you use your cordless drill more than twice a year, it definitely isn’t.Take one.

You simply place it on your drill, place the drill on your marker, secure it with your hand, or clamp and drill.

Bonus: DrillBlock has a V-groove on the bottom, allowing you to easily drill 45° holes in corners and edges.

DIY Options

Alright, but let’s say it’s 10:00 p.m. Saturday, and you have to get on with your project. Or maybe you need a hole that isn’t in 1/16 increments. Or any of the dozens of other reasons you might need to drill a straight hole without the help of a trading guide. Well, my friend, you do yours.

It’s easy to understand. Start with a few scraps of wood, about 1 1/2 wide and 10″ long. Cut 2 from one end, making sure the cut is a perfect square.

Apply a little wood glue to the cut part, then place it on the 1″ longer piece from the end. Use a square to make sure the two pieces are aligned.

Secure the pieces together while the glue adheres. (If you’re in a hurry, you can adjust the alignment with the screws and continue with your project.)

To use it, all you have to do is align the bit with the angle created by the guide. Use hands or pliers to secure it to the workplace, line up and go. You will have hundreds of holes instead of any size. It will eventually wear out, you can just put two fragments together and make another one.

Reusable templates

If you need to drill multiple holes of the same size, you can modify the DIY jig for extra sturdiness. Go to the brass and aluminum section of the hardware or hobby store and find a tube withinternal diametermatch your drill bit. It won’t be the number on the tag, so bring a drill or a pair of calipers to measure. Cut a 1/2″ piece off the end.

Then use hot melt glue to attach it to one side of your drill guide. You’ve basically created a collet to guide the drill bit, using the same principle in DrillBlock above.

Now… let’s take a look at our work.
