Multi-read content how to carry a tray of drinks

If you are a waiter or waitress, at the start of your career you should have specialist knowledge of the correct transport of trays. Generally, the tray is worn on the left hand slightly above the left shoulder. When it comes to hygiene, you should try to keep the tray away from your neck or mouth. The tray can come in many styles, sizes and shapes. In restaurants, 27-inch to 30-inch oval trays are frequently used to hold food. The 15 inch cocktail tray is for serving drinks.

Things you should check:

Here are some tips to avoid tray slippage or other accidents:

  • Check if the floor is slippery.
  • Check the floor mats. There may be some flaws.
  • Try to follow a common and shortest route when serving food.
  • Do not attempt to use narrow aisles or crowded areas to avoid collisions with guests or other staff.
  • When transporting the tray, watch out for objects falling on the floor that could cause you to lose your balance.
  • Pay attention to sharp edges on furniture and equipment.

How to wear the tray:

  • Use not only your fingers, but also your palms to grip the tray to support your shoulders to carry the load.
  • Trying to handle loads with your hands, feet, and hips that don’t support the load on your hips can cause back pain.
  • Don’t just move the platter or your arms, but move your whole body when you need to turn.
  • In case of transporting the tray in a crowded area, just lift the tray and, if necessary, just give a little squeal to get everyone’s attention, otherwise it can sometimes happen that guests fall on it and cause a serious danger.
  • Be very careful when carrying hot food.
  • Carry the cocktail tray not only with your thumb and index finger, but also use other fingers for more control.

To place items on the board:

  • Place all items on all components of the tray to ensure proper balance.
  • The heaviest items should be placed in the center of the tray.
  • Lighter items should be placed in corners where heavier items are concentrated.

To be placed in the table top:

  • Bend your knees and put the tray down.
  • Use both hands for good control.
  • If the load is too heavy, don’t be afraid to ask for help from fellow soldiers.
  • Try to focus on safe loading instead of maintaining styles.

These are some of the things that are common for waiters or waiters to ensure proper carrying and landing of trays. This is a basic skill that every server should master.
