TO ADVISE

Only oneartto hang works of art. It’s not rocket science, however, and if you follow a few basic principles, you will always succeed!

The right height to hang artwork, mirrors and pictures above sofa, headboard, gallery walll, toilet, console table, dining room, living room and more. Kylie M Interiors Edesign

And remember, this is a GUIDELINE, not a rule.Yesalways the exceptionbecause there are TONS of artwork sizes, wall sizes and other things to consider when hanging artwork – I can’t cover them all, but I’m sure I’ll try!

But before I start, I have something important to say…

It doesn’t matter how high your ceiling is or how tall your husband is – it has absolutely nothing to do with how the artwork looks on the wall. Really.

Why?

Because no matter how high the wall or the opinion of the husband, there is an invisible line of sight that we turn to when there is a towering wall in front of us and this invisible line is in the distance approximately. 8-9 sets. Why?Because I say so. And so many other smart, cute, talented people have said the same thing. But really, it’s something we’ve grown accustomed to in ordinary homes for over 100 years.

Now let’s analyze it…

WHAT ARE THE EYE RULES?

When it comes to hanging artwork, the eye level rule says your artwork should hang with its CENTER approximately 58-62 inches off the floor.

Give birth

Why is this rule stupid?Because it’s WAY too generic!

  • If you apply this to every piece of art, you’ll end up with a hot mess with a lot of your pieces hanging at the wrong height.
  • This rule REALLY only applies to rooms of approx. 6-36 inches tall. And even then, it depends on what is UNDER your artwork. Is it a buffet table or a console? Bench or bedside table?
  • The eye level ruler also works for nearsighted people. 5’2 to 5’6. If you were taller or shorter, your eye level would be MUCH different.

In other words, the eye level rule is a great GUIDELINE, but there are many…many exceptions.

BTW, to show you real homes with real budgets, I only use photos from my Online Color Consultant clients. THANK YOU to all of you who sent your photos to; you make my little colorful world go round!

WHAT IS THE BEST HEIGHT TO LOAD ART ON AN EMERGENCY WALL?

The ideal height for hanging a picture on an empty wall EVERYTHING depends on the size of the picture you are hanging.

HIGH ART HANDLE 6 – 36 inches

The CENTER of your artwork should be close to eye level. For the average person, this is between 58 and 62 inches off the ground. The taller you are, you might want to be closer to 62 inches, however, PERSONALLY I’m no less than 60 inches (I’m 5 4).

The most beautiful beige color

The three paintings in the photo above hang on a bare, unfurnished wall directly below them, and they are approximately the same size. 24 inches tall, so their CENTER is58-62 inchesof the ground.

APPROVED FINE ART IMAGE 36 – 48 inches tall

  • the beach in the CENTER goes from approx. 48 – 56 inches off the ground
  • The higher your room is 36 inches, the closer it is to eye level, the higher the CENTER of your room should be.
  • when you measure 42 inches, the center will be approx. 54 inches off the floor, breaking the eye level rule unless you’re an adorable cupcake
  • if you had a watch piece at a whopping 48 inches, the center would be approx. 48 inches from the floor (may be slightly lower or higher depending on exact section, height of baseboards and height of ceiling).

In the following photo, these mirrors are over 36 inches tall, which means their centers are 48 inches off the ground (I think they could be 1 inch taller)

It’s funny how you think the number “in the center” will keep going down, but the reality is NO, as your room gets TALLER the center starts to go back to the original direction is 58 to 62 inches !

Although I don’t like the STAFF modern contemporary style, I found myself drawn to this next room with its moody vibe and SECTORized artwork…

Now I want you to be a complete geek with me. Take a tape measure and measure the 60 inch high point on your body. While this doesn’t apply to ALL furniture and artwork, this number is a great place to start.

BTW, there are tons of tips and ideas in this blog post. I highly recommend focusing on topics that are directly related to you and your home.

HOW HIGH SHOULD IMAGES BE ON A CONSOLE, SIDEBOARD OR SMALL INTERIOR ROOM?

  • If the piece of furniture you are hanging your work on is less than 30 inches, the CENTER of your work should be approx. 58 to 62 inches from the ground. If possible, use home decor to connect artwork/furniture so that there isn’t such a gap between them.
  • If the piece of furniture you are hanging the artwork on is LARGER in size over 30 inches, it should be approx. Approximately 4 to 8 inches between the top of the cabinet and the bottom of the picture frame.

The top panel is only 30 inches, in which case the 58-62 inch guidelines will apply. HOWEVER, due to the huge size of the artwork, it also meets the 4-8 inch rule! Notice how some of the taller trim is used to visually tie the table to the artwork.

In this neighboring living room, the console is 30 inches, which means we could REALLY go either way. In this case we used a 4-8 inch guide and again used the home decor to connect the art/table…

HOW DO THE HIGHLIGHTS extend to the top of the cave?

If you are hanging a picture or mirror over a standard topcoat, the CENTER of your work should be approx. Approximately 58-62 inches from the center of the artwork to the floor, OR, depending on the height of the mural/size of your artwork, approx. 4 to 6 inches above the top of the finish coat (assuming your finish coat is 36 inches standard height).

The best way to paint the walls with picture rails

In this next photo, most of the artwork is approx. 30 inches tall so it sits about 4 inches above the topcoat. On the other hand, since the two pieces in the hallway are less than 20 inches apart, they seem too short if placed so low. Instead, the 58-60 inch guide is applied for a more proportional approach…

HOWEVER, if the top coat is higher than the standard 36 inches, the two smaller pieces will EASILY fall under the 4-6 inch fence, while the large one may be too large for the remaining wall space! As mentioned before, there are A LOT of FREAKIN EXCEPTIONS!

In addition to an “above standard” top coat, 4-6 inch guides are applicable when using 30 inch high mirrors or artwork. This next photo is a great example, and due to the height of the illustration, it is possible to accommodate the 58-62 inch guide simultaneously!

How high to hang pictures in the bathroom?

SANITATION ART CHART

When hung over the toilet (it’s a great place to hang out), spacing is needed. 58 to 62 inches from center of floor artwork. Why? Because the toilet bowl is shorter than 30 inches. The exception, of course, is if you have a very long, narrow room, in which case you’ll probably be 6-8 inches longer than the toilet lid.

AN ART PHOTO ON A TOWEL RAIL?

Medium seated towel rail approx. 42 to 48 inches from the ground. However, when it comes to hanging artwork above a towel rack, it’s a mixed bag. Some people love their art of sitting HIGH so they don’t knock it over every time they hang up a towel…

These towel racks can be hung nearly 48 inches off the ground (Benjamin Moore Balboa Mist)

If you’re wondering ole Ginger, it really depends on how high you hang the towel rack versus the size of the artwork you have. Here are some considerations…

  • If your towel bar hangs from the bottom end of the item, I wouldn’t hang an artwork less than 12 inches higher than this bar. This piece will need to be hung so that its center is 58 – 60 inches from the floor, which creates too much space between the towel rack and your artwork. Instead, I’d be looking for a piece that’s 24 inches tall or equal.
  • If your towel rack hangs on the top side, consider artwork no taller than 30 inches, so you can hang it approximately. 6 inches above the towel bar (as shown in the bottom image above).

WHAT IS THE BEST HEIGHT FOR VIEWING ART IN THE DING ROOM?

When you hang a picture or a mirror in the dining room, it all depends on what it hangs ABOVE. If your work hangs above a buffet-style cabinet over 30 inches high, you would use the general rule of leaving 4-8 inches of wall space between the two sections.

In this next dining room, because the bench is over 30 inches tall, the art sits approx. 8 inches above…

In the photo above, since the buffet counter is over 30 inches tall, the mirror is PERFECTLY placed (about 4 inches).

HOWEVER, if you have a cabinet or bench that is less than 30 inches high, as shown below, you will want to consider hanging your artwork so that its center is approximately. 58 to 62 inches from the ground. In this situation, I would lean on 58 inches to visually connect it a bit more to the cabinetry, using slightly larger decor as a link between the two pieces.

I have a bitwrongtalented clients and I love how this medium mod style dining room appeared in Benjamin Moore White Dove

However, if your picture or mirror is hungwhite wallin a dining room it should be centered over the projector/dining table and as long as it is no more than 36 inches high it should have its center about 60 inches from the floor.

Remember there are always exceptions to the rule, so if you’re in doubt, grab some painter’s tape or brown paper and draw things on the wall before you drive a nail in.

WHAT IS THE BEST HEIGHT TO HANG PICTURES OR FACES ON A SOFA OR ROOMS?

If there is too much space between the top of your sofa or armchair and the bottom of your painting or mirror, there will be a “visual disconnect” between the two. This means your pendant light will work independently of the furniture, rather than becoming a staple piece or anchor for a color scheme or theme.

If your painting is hung above a couch, sectional chair, or single chair, the bottom of the painting should be about 8 to 12 inches from the top of your furniture.

Sherwin Williams Tony Taupe, off-white sofa and chairs. Living room, Kylie M Interiors Edesign

Sherwin Williams Mega Greige

The artwork in the photo above hangs approx. 10 inches from the back of the sofa. As for the sheer SIZE of this piece, it’s lower and seems to hover above the sofa – higher and it will hug the ceiling too much! Also, keep in mind that if this wall was 8 feet tall instead of 9 feet, this image would just be too big.

And while I rarely mention ceiling height, when it comes to sofas and sections, you can really take a few small guidelines from ceiling height, such as…

  • If you have an 8 foot ceiling and an average sized room, you can leave approx. The distance from the top of the couch to the artwork is 8 inches, so you don’t get too close to the ceiling line.
  • If the ceiling is 9 feet, you can increase it to 12 inches so your picture or mirror doesn’t look too heavy on the couch and use a more balanced set of walls. I know we’re talking THUBS here, but trust me, it all counts (wink).
  • In most cases, the space between the top of the artwork and the ceiling should not be less than the distance between the top of the cabinet and the bottom of the artwork.

In this neighboring living room, the pair of mirrors is approx. 8 inches taller than the sofa – perfectly placed due to the 8 foot high ceiling, but certainly couldn’t be lower (although I could throw the clock on the sidewalk)…

Benjamin Moore Rodeo, warm gray paint colour, living room, dark gray sectional. Kylie M Interiors Edesign, online paint color consultant

Benjamin Moore Rodeo

And it’s not just the right height, SIZE is also important. In the previous photo with the white sofa and a large piece of art, this piece is a perfect size for the wall, but couldn’t be bigger. HOWEVER, the same cannot be said for this sequel…

  • the framed photo is a bit too small for the wall space, even shrinking it to 10 inches doesn’t make sense
  • it should be between the border and the edge of the cushion, instead of leaning to the right as it does
  • If lowered about 10 inches, it would appear more proportionate to the wall space, but could still be wider at a glance.

Using what you’ve learned so far, what do you think of the artwork in this next photo?

Sherwin Williams on the Rock

IT’S HIGHER THAN SNOOP DOGS! Seriously, be aware that there is more space between the profile and the artwork than there is between the ceiling and the artwork, which means this installation is TOO HIGH . Although the art is approx. Higher than a 12 inch sofa, because the rooms are higher than zero and the ceiling is 8 feet, they must sit 4 inches lower.

However, I like this ratio because both pieces are about 3/4 the width of the section (which is ideal).

What about this next one?

It’s pretty much the same as the STINKIN, but I ALSO VALUED it 13-14 inches taller than a couch.Does two thumbs make a difference?I don’t know, you might say – wink wink. And yes, I love sexual references… AND Ryan Reynolds AND booze – ALL THE TIMES. This part is also a small width BIT for the length of the sofa. Again, approx. 3/4 width or more is a good decorative target.

I’m a little obsessed with the color scheme of my next client’s house and she did a great job hanging her artwork (and mirrors)…

HOW HIGH SHOULD THE PICTURE OR FACES ON THE TOP TABLE?

As with most furniture, this can depend on the height of the headboard and what you want to hang above it. Usually there are approx. A wall space of 4 to 12 inches between the top of the headboard and the bottom of the piece will work for you.

This next photo is perfect. The art hangs approx. 4 inches above the headboard – neither too low nor too high, creating a seamless look from wall to bed.

A FEW TIPS FOR THE ART OF TOP TABLE RETURNING

  • secure it so it can withstand an earthquake or nighttime activities (nothing wrong with drivers either, let’s just say)
  • if you have a super short headboard, consider the artwork a bit taller, that way you can use the 58-62 inch guide and still keep the artwork/headboard intuitively connected
  • It is ideal if the art is approximate. 3/4 the width of the headboard or wider – this helps everything look proportionate

HOW HIGH SHOULD WALL SURFACES ON A TOUCH WALL BE?

The gallery walls are TRICKY. Whether you’re doing a simple grid or a more eclectic arrangement, you need to pretend your collection is HUGE. Place your gallery on the ground with the same distance you want on the wall. Measure the width and height of the gallery and use the OVERALL HEIGHT as a guideline (if you’re doing a random display, your height will be based on the tallest part defined).

Let’s break down this next photo, so we can learn the lessons of FUN…

1. You should treat your gallery as if it were ONE LARGE PIECE. To get the SUM height of the collection above, we add the height of the framed sections, plus the space in between. This sets the total height of the bookcase to approx. 45 inches.

2. HOWEVER, there is about 2 inches too much between the pieces, which means the overall height should be closer to 43 inches.

3. Use the motto of ‘if an artwork is over 36 inches you will want a CENTER support of approx. 48 – 56 inches from the floor, I guess this monitor is about 3 inches too short. HOWEVER, the overall idea is EXCELLENT, adding personality to what would otherwise be a super boring hallway.

  • If your gallery’s overall height is 24 to 36 inches, you’ll want to use a general eye-level guide of 58 to 62 inches from floor to center; as you would if your gallery was a single section of this height.
  • If the total height of your bookshelf is more than 36 inches, you’ll want to gradually reduce this middle section. The closer your total height is to 36 inches, the closer the center is to 58 to 62 inches. The HIGHER your arrangement, the more your gallery should be 48 – 56 inches off the ground.

Before you start hanging, when you have WIDTH

HOW SHOULD MY WOODEN WALL BE ON MY SOFA OR FURNITURE?

THE WALL ANGLE ON A SOFA OR A ROOM

You should treat your gallery wall as if it were a LARGE room and determine its overall width and height. From there, you can use painter’s tape to visualize what a piece of this size would look like on your wall, and can be adjusted accordingly using the same guidelines as described below. of art above the sofa.

If your gallery wall is more than 6 inches above the ceiling (especially with an 8-foot ceiling, as shown above), your gallery wall is too high. In the photo above, notice how the OVERALL size of the gallery is taken into account and the distance between the top of the sofa / the bottom of the lowest frame is approx. 6 inches.

In this situation, you would treat your wall as empty and return to the ’50 – 62 inches on center’Guidelines, depending on the TOTAL HEIGHT of your arrangement.

And of course, there are ALWAYS exceptions, like the picture with that wall of sunken stairs. Although it looks like the gallery wall is on this angled profile, in reality there is a 3 foot step space between the back of the section and the wall.

HOW HIGH DOES CORE ART NEED TO BE ON A FIRE CLAW?

  • The higher your coat, the less space there is between the top and bottom of the image
  • a shorter mantel can accommodate a little more wall space in the middle, but no more than 10 inches
  • In general, there should be approx. 4-8 inch wall space between fireplace and art/mirror

In this next photo, even though there is no traditional fireplace, since the environment is over 30 inches high, the piece hangs in the right place, about 5 inches taller.

And whether it’s a large fire pit or a simpler setup, the same rule applies, as shown below. However, I would like the clock to be a bit larger to be proportional to the size of the foyer width…

What if you do NOT have a fireplace? However, we are backing 58-62 inches off the ground, I would go to the top side instead of the bottom. If you have a raised chimney, this is also the distance from the FIREPLACE (but I could reduce it to 58 inches).

CAN I MY ART ON THE COAT OR BUFFET/CARD?

The final option for hanging artwork is “tilt”. If the part you place your work on is low enough and the work is stable enough (light enough to sit on without slipping, or heavy but supported by an anchor on the back), then you can give a title to his work.

While I LOVE his hairy face (no, I’m not talking about Tim), I wanted to see this big boy hanging over the fireplace. And this particular part would be an EXCEPTION where I would break the 4-12 inch rule. The extended height and width of this artwork, along with the height of the fireplace and ceiling, makes me want the wall space to only appear between 2 and 3 inches. I would also like to see some simple home decor, maybe some artificial plants/candle holders on the side of this piece, just to add a soft touch.

And if you have a room that isn’t as wide QUITE needs to be proportioned, you can combine hang and tilt for a well-proportioned and balanced look…

Remember, if an artwork is placed on something too high, the artwork will be hard to see – I hate being strangled because God knows I’m pretty eccentric! Think about how the artwork is viewed from a seated and standing position…

  • If it was a mirror
  • , does it only reflect the ceiling when tilted?
  • If your work is framed in glass, do you only see the light from the glass, not the work itself?
  • Is the beauty of the artwork diminished because you can’t see it in person?

A BAG OF MIX…

In this next photo there are also lots of compliments on ALSO being treated like a sideboard and I bet the owner actually came back 58-62 inches off the ground.

how high to hang picture above dresser?

Tip #1 Hang single artwork pieces at eye level We find it’s best to hang single artwork at eye level, and 60 inches from center to the floor is the magic number. If you’re hanging your art above furniture, it can be 4-6 inches above the piece.

How high should a picture be hung over a sideboard?

HOW HIGH SHOULD A PICTURE HANG ABOVE A CONSOLE TABLE, BUFFET or SHORT PIECE OF FURNITURE? If the piece of furniture you’re hanging artwork above is lower than 30 inches, the CENTER of your piece should sit approx. 58 – 62 inches from the floor.

What is the proper height to hang a picture?

60″ to 63″
A simple rule of thumb to hanging art at the right height is to place the center of the art object at 60″ to 63″ above the floor. From there you can adjust accordingly for the overall height of the ceiling or height of the furniture over which the art will hang.

What is the formula for hanging pictures?

When hanging something at an average eye level, position its center 57 to 60 inches from the floor. Use the following formula: Divide the height of the frame by two; from that number, subtract the distance from the top of the frame to the hanging hardware; add this number to 57, 58, 59, or 60.

How big should artwork be above a dresser?

1. Size. In terms of size, aim to fill about two-thirds to three-fourths of your available wall space. If you are looking to hang a focal point above a piece of furniture—such as your couch, headboard, or dresser—follow the same proportions and find a work two-thirds to three-fourths smaller than your furniture.

Should pictures be hung at the same height?

If you hang all your photos using the 57 inches rule, then the centers of all of your frames should be at the same height, even if your collection includes pieces of different heights.

How far apart should 2 pictures be hung?

The ideal spacing between multiple artworks is 3 to 6 inches. The 57-inch number is a good average height, but if your eye level is different, be sure to use that measurement when hanging art. Every scenario is different, so at the end of the day, make sure you love the way your art is displayed.

What height should paintings be hung at home?

between 57 and 60 inches
A good rule of thumb is to hang art so that its midpoint is between 57 and 60 inches from the floor. Aim for the lower end of the range if most members of your household are on the short side; in rooms with ceilings higher than eight feet, artwork can be hung a little higher than 60 inches off the floor.

How far down from the ceiling should a picture be hung?

Also, just as in other spaces, you don’t want to hang all the way up to the ceiling. Leave a gap of at least one foot from the top of the picture and the ceiling. It’s okay if it’s not perfectly measured out. You have some wiggle room here to arrange the pictures in the way that looks best.

What is considered eye level?

It is the distance from the ground plane to your eyes. Well, if the average height of a man in the united states is 5 feet 9 inches, and the average height of a woman is 5 feet 4 inches, than average eye level is about 5 feet.

How do you hang 4 pictures in a row evenly?

Where should pictures be placed on the wall?

There is a standard rule that Art Gallery’s use with regards to hanging a frame, which is that it should be 60 inches or 1520mm from the floor to the centre of the picture. This allows the picture to be positioned at the average person’s eye level so that the focal point of the picture is right in eye line.

What should I hang above my dresser?

Hang or prop a mirror, artwork or photos on the wall above the dresser, centered on the furniture. (Advanced placement: For a wide dresser, try placing art or a mirror off to one side and balancing it with a tall vase or boxes.)

How big is too big for a picture on a wall?

A common question is, “When is a picture too large for a wall?” The answer is dependent on the type of wall you have and the style of your room. For most walls, an 8×10-inch photo is too large, but larger frames can look amazing. Most walls can accommodate a 16×20-inch frame.

What size art fits your wall?

1) Wall art should take up 60%- 75% of the available wall space, i.e wall space that isn’t covered by furniture or moldings. Start by measuring the width and height of your wall and then multiply them by both 0.60 and 0.75. This will give you the range of canvas print sizes that will suit the space.
