Multi-read content how deep to plant peony roots

Upon receipt of your Third Branch peonies, immediately open the box and inspect the roots. Report any issues to us within 48 hours!
We encourage you to plant peonies as soon as possible after receipt. You can store them briefly in the fridge or freezer while you choose and prepare the planting site (if you haven’t already).

Peonies are not difficult, but choose your placement wisely as they are very frustrating to plant. Place them three or four feet apart for good air circulation.
Plant peonies in a sunny location, sheltered from strong winds. Choose a location with well-drained, deep, fertile, humus-rich soil with a neutral pH.
Plant peonies in the fall: late September and October in most of the country, and even later in the south. (If you must divide or move an already planted tree, do so in the fall.) Spring peonies are usually about a year later than those planted in the fall.
Dig a large hole about two meters deep and two meters wide. If the soil is heavy or sandy, enrich it with compost. Mix about a cup of bone meal into the ground. Pack it down firmly.

Position the base so that the eye of the plant is facing up on solid ground, making sure the eye and trunk are 2 inches off the ground. (In southern states, choose early-blooming varieties, plant about an inch deep, and provide shade.) Don’t plant too deep or your peonies won’t bloom once planted. In most countries, peonies (buds) should be no more than 1 ½ to 2 inches deep than the soil line.
Finish by backfilling the hole, making sure the soil doesn’t bury the roots deeper than 2 inches.

Care

Young peonies need time to become glorious! It can take a few years to form, flower and develop. We ship large 3-5 eyed branches for plenty of good roots to support first year blooms. The peony thrives on benign neglect. Unlike most perennials, they don’t need to be dug up and divided every few years unless you want to propagate a specific type.
If the soil is infertile, the time for fertilizing (bone meal, compost, or rotting manure) is in early summer, after the peonies bloom. Fertilize no more than once every few years and check your soil annually.

Sometimes the peony stems of some varieties aren’t strong enough to support their huge blooms. Consider twine stakes or purchase a metal stand made specifically for heavy flowers.
If you don’t like the look of dead flowers, you may be “tired”. Remove peonies as soon as they begin to wilt, cutting firmly along the leaves so the stems do not protrude from the foliage.
Cut foliage to the ground in the fall to prevent winter diseases and remove foliage from your garden or field.
Do not wet the peonies with the coating. In areas with extremely cold temperatures, during the first winter after planting, you can mulch VERY VERY loosely with straw, wood chips or shredded bark.
Peonies make excellent cut flowers, which last more than a week in a vase. For best results, prune when the bud looks like a hard marshmallow.
