How to get melted crayons out of clothes

Last Friday my husband and I were going to watch a football game. Earlier today, I threw my favorite jeans in the washing machine. When the wash is done, I put everything in the dryer, but check each item first. This is something I started doing after I had kids because their clothes are always full of dirt, food and other UCOs (unidentifiable scabs) and I want to make sure everything is clean before I to dry. Everything looks like spic-n-span and is ready to throw away. My husband comes home from work and I’m almost ready to find a babysitter, I just need my jeans. I opened the dryer and took them out…

They are covered in red.

RED!

Everywhere!

I started frantically pulling more items out of the dryer. Red. Red. Red. Everything is red on it. I started looking for a single tube of lipstick or anything else that could cause such a disaster. I do not find anything ! I was completely baffled when suddenly I could see in my eyes a scene that had taken place earlier that day. While I was vacuuming my son’s room, I bent down and picked up a red pencil and stuffed it in the back pocket of my jeans, which I then threw in the washing machine. wash without checking the bag. UGH!

I threw this pile of clothes in my room so angry that most of my son’s new clothes were broken and left for my date. Two days later I remembered that I had to do something about the red stained clothes and did a Google search, “how to get melted crayons out of clothes”. I found results, but I’m still skeptical and don’t think it will work. I knew it was worth a try, so I washed my clothes and like magic, the evil red marks were gone! I was surprised.

Here are some before and after photos. The only reason the colors in the photos look different is because the first photo was taken with flash at night and the second photo without flash during the day.

How to remove melted crayons from clothes

The red shows up on most t-shirts, jeans, casual pants, and socks, but it doesn’t match any of my husband’s work shirts. The shirt is a little textured so it really absorbs that crayon wax and it won’t come out, but the shirt is an iron monster and I’m still plotting its downfall (I think I’ll get therethis). It also doesn’t come out of the group on my boys’ panties, but I’m totally fine with stained panties (there must be a good joke here, but I can’t think of one). So it might not work for everything in the broken laundry pile, but it’s worth a try!

Here are the stepsremove melted crayons from clothes:

  1. Pour water into several large saucepans, place them on the stove and bring to a boil.
  2. Put the clothes in the washing machine and let the water heat up. You want it to get super hot, so that’s where boiling water comes in. Add them to the washing machine now.
  3. Add detergent. It doesn’t matter what you usually use, whether it’s powder or liquid.
  4. Add 1/2 cup of vinegar and 5 tablespoons of dish soap (Dawn is great).
  5. Soak clothes for 15 minutes.
  6. Run the washing machine.

I don’t own a front loader so I haven’t tried this, but it has worked for others on the internet. So this isSteps for a front loading washing machine:

  1. Set the washing machine to the clean cycle and load the clothes.
  2. Pour 1/2 white vinegar over the clothes.
  3. Add four tablespoons of Dawn dish soap to the clothes.
  4. Choose an automatic soak cycle if you have one (15-30 minutes is perfect)
  5. Add detergent. Use what you normally use.
  6. Turn on the cycle.

Don’t forget to clean the dryer drum so you don’t stain other clothes. I use amagic eraserand it works great removing all the red crayons.

*****Use caution and good judgment when experimenting with any cleaning methods*****

Dryer sheets can easily scrape up the globs of melted crayon.

Nail polish remover with acetone on a rag will easily remove the baked on color from the crayon.

****Allow the dryer to thoroughly air out for several days before using it after applying any cleaning methods.****

***After cleaning the dryer and allowing several days to air out, wash a load of old, unimportant clothes and throw that into the dryer before attempting to dry any new or important clothes.
