If this is your first time sizing wire, you probably know how the AWG gauge is calculated. Here are the basic steps we use:

  1. Apply the NEC requirement of 80% to your amperage. Specifically, we’ll calculate the minimum wattage a wire must have (how many amps they can carry) to get the right size for a 40 amp circuit.

NEC Rule 310-16 states that we need 20% more amps for every 100 feet of buffet distance. This also includes the circuit breaker you need for a 40 amp circuit.

If you are sending current over long distances, you must make this adjustment to meet the minimum amperage requirements:

  • 10% surcharge for additional boards at 50ft.
  • 20% surcharge for subpanel located 100 feet away.
  • 30% more for subpanels at 150 feet.
  • 40% surcharge for additional boards at 200ft.

We know we need at least 50 amp wire for 40 amp service near the subpanel. Now, if the subpanel is 100 feet away, we need to increase this minimum amperage requirement by 20% as follows:

40 amp wire (100 foot spacing)= 50A × 1.2 =60A capacity
