Below are step-by-step photos to show you, from start to finish, how I replanted a newly purchased succulent.

When to repot the cactus?

There are many times when it is necessary to repot your succulents. The first is right after their purchase. Often the nursery will plant the cactus in very organic soil that does not drain well.

This works well in a climate-controlled nursery, but generally won’t work well when you bring your succulents home. It is best to repot the cactus in new soil after purchasing it.

Another time you want to repot your cactus is when they have filled out or overgrown the pot they are growing in. Often they will be “rooted”, which means that the roots fill the pot and the plants do not. space to develop more roots.

Growing cactus from a nursery is very popular because it can help slow the growth rate of the cactus, meaning the nursery doesn’t have to repot its cactus as often.

As a general rule, I recommend leaving about 1/2″ to 1″ (1-2.5cm) between the rim of the pot and your succulent leaves. If your succulent is about 3″ (7.5cm) in diameter, you will want to place it in a pot that is about 4″ (10cm) in diameter.

Get rid of your pots and soil

The first step to successfully growing succulents is to empty the pot and remove as much soil as possible. Nurseries almost always plant their cacti in soil that is too dense andretain too much water. The more of this nursery soil you remove, the healthier your succulent roots will be.

You may not be able to extract all the soil without damaging the roots, and that’s perfectly fine. Remove as much as you can while being gentle with your succulents.

In general, I don’t recommend rinsing your succulent roots as it can damage them and cause problems later. I cover this in more detail in the video below:

If you’re growing your own succulents (like me here), you’ll want to leave the roots intact as much as possible. On the other hand, if you are lining up several succulents, you may want to cut some roots.

Removing some of the roots won’t create major problems – your succulent will survive well anyway. And, if you are lucky enough to have children attached to your main culture, now is a good time todelete them if you want.

Place the net over the drain hole

While drainage holes are important to the health of your succulents, you don’t want your soil to fall out of them. Use somemesh bandto prevent larger pieces of soil from falling.

Mesh tape works well because it allows water to drain easily, but will still hold most of the soil. You might cause some “dust” to fall off, but that’s normal.

If you want, you can also usemesh screeninstead of mesh tape.

Fill your pot almost to the top

Before placing your berries in your pot of choice, pour most (but not too much) over the top withsucculent soil. Leave some space at the top for the roots to fit in comfortably and you can add more soil later.

Place your Succulent

Now is the time to add your succulents to the pot! You can plant it centered or off-center, depending on your preference.

Tuck a few roots into the ground so they start to grow better.

PinCrassula ovata ‘Gollum’

Fill the pot to the top

Now it’s time to fill the pot. You just want to leave some space between the soil and the top of the pot. Make sure the succulent leaves lie completely on the ground to prevent rotting.

If you boughtbonsai jack soil, you will have an excellent wand, ideal for poking the ground several times, helping to eliminate large air pockets between the roots.

This will prevent your soil from sinking after a few waterings.

PinCrassula ovata ‘Gollum’

Another great outfit

To finish your potted succulent, add aPad. This is why you leave some room at the top of your pot.

The filling can be something bright and fun or a simple pebble, like I used here. As you fill, press down on the soil to help the succulent stay in place.

PinCrassula ovata ‘Gollum’

Most important!!!

When your succulents are potted andPadin the same position, let it rest for a day or two before watering it. This rest period will give the roots time to heal before they start soaking, which will help prevent root rot.

And that’s all it takes! Pretty simple isn’t it?

The most common mistakes I see when growing containers are a) not tilling the soil from the roots, b) forgetting to cover it, and c) watering too soon.

Follow the steps above and you’ll avoid these common problems and get your succulent garden off to a healthy start!

And if you haven’t downloaded it yet, be sure to download itfree cheat sheetto see what it looks like when your succulents need more or less water.Click here for the cheat sheet.
