The cordless drill chuck is very painful. Over time, it will need to be replaced. Common problems include the chuck no longer closing or opening smoothly. Or sometimes one of the jaws breaks and the chuck doesn’t hold the drill in place. Fortunately, replacing the chuck on a cordless drill is easy to do, and this article will show you how.

To start up.

 2. Set the transmission to the lowest setting.

3. Set the clutch to the “Drill” setting.

Turn the clutch assembly to the “Drill” setting.

Switch to drilling mode

4. Remove the screw securing the chuck.

Open the chuck to the widest position.

Open the chuck

Use a Phillips screwdriver to loosen the fixing screw. Screws are counter-threaded (clockwise requiredturn to loosen).

Reverse-threaded screw

Remove screw from chuck assembly.

Remove the screw

5. Remove the chuck from the drill.

Insert the short end of a large Allen wrench (as large as a chuck will work) into the chuck assembly.

Insert a large allen wrench

Firmly hold the Allen key in the chuck.

Secure the allen wrench

Place the drill on a surface that allows the chuck (and allen key) to protrude from the edge.

Place the drill on the edge of a table

FEATURES: The next step is to turn the Allen wrench with a rubber mallet to loosen the chuck assembly. Before proceeding to the next step, ensure that the bit is positioned so that the blow of the mallet will rotate the assembly counter-clockwise. Hitting the wrench in the wrong direction will tighten (and possibly damage) the assembly.

Strike the allen wrench

While holding the drill steady on a flat work surface, strike the open end of the Allen wrench with a rubber mallet. This will loosen the chuck assembly. (This step may take several attempts.)

Strike the allen wrench

Continue turning (unscrewing) the chuck assembly by hand until it unscrews the main shaft.

Rotate the chuck

Remove the chuck assembly from the drill.

Remove the chuck

INSTALL A NEW CHUCK [back to top]
6. Install the chuck.

Screw the new chuck assembly onto the spindle.

Install the new chuck

Hold the chuck assembly as firmly as possible (by hand).

tighten by hand

Open the chuck to receive the retaining screw.

Open the chuck

Install the fixing screw.

Install the screw

Secure the screw with a Phillips screwdriver. Screws are counter-threaded (requires counter-clockwise rotation to secure).

Secure the screw
