Multi-read content how tall should a newel post be

There are several methods for installing stair posts, but the first step is to cut the posts to the correct height. This height depends on the standard railing height of your railing, based on building codes in your area. As a general rule, ramps at ground level should be at least 36″ or 42″ high, depending on local codes, and stair railings should be between 34″ and 38″ high. Although these are typical requirements established by the International Residential Code, they vary by region, so be sure to find out which building codes apply to installing stairs in your area before proceeding. Continue.

Calculating the height of the newel post is the first step in the process of installing the newel post. The two most common cases are the column across the floor and the column at the top of the stairs. A third scenario is installing new posts with a trend roller, but that’s a bit more involved, so I’ll cover that in a future article. So keep watching

When using starter posts, the goal in all situations is for the stair handrail to end in the center of the top block. If you are using a post box, there may or may not be a space that is visually identified by sinking as the “top block”. If your last post doesn’t contain this, there’s no real rule, the railing ends up somewhere near the top of the most recent post. In other situations, when there is some kind of upper block, the calculation is quite simple. Using the following formula will center the stair handrail on the top block.

Newel Post Height

The height of the pylon from the ground is calculated to place the stair handrail in the center of the top block according to the following formula:Pillar Height = Rail Bottom Height (Rail 2) (Top Block 2) Cover Mold (if applicable)

**Remember that if you are using a spinning starter cylinder or a boxed starter cylinder without a molded cap, this measurement will not be included in the formula. Alsomust addshoe thicknessif the last message is NOT on the top of the shoe.

The following example uses a new traditional large railing and a 2 ⅛” – 6701 square post with a finished handrail height of 37″ and the post sits on top of the shoe:

34.875 (2.125 ÷ 2) (6 ÷ 2) 1.25 = 40.1875 or 40 3/16” to top of block (bottom of post cap)

Stair Newel Post Height

The heights of the newer posts at the top of the stairs are calculated as follows. The following example assumes that a staircase is 37 inches high.

  1. Mark the top block where the center of the stair handrail will terminate on the newest pylon.
  2. Imagine where the top of the railing will be, you can do this by placing part of the handrail over the ends of the stairs and then connecting the water lines until you get the thickness of the railing on the patio. . Then divide that number by half and add that distance to the midpoint from above. This is where the top of the rails will be.
  3. Place the stair post in the correct position with the sign pointing up the stairs and mark the tangent line at the tip of the stairs
  4. – – – –
  5. as shown on the bottom block.
  6. Measure from the marker for the end of the 37″ track and mark the column again.
  7. Measure between the 37″ mark on the bottom block and the tangent line and cut that number “X” at the bottom of the post. You now have your starter post.
