At the end of this article, you’ll know what you can expect to pay for an HVAC system – and remember, you can always getFree estimateabout your heating and cooling needs at Minnick’s!

To start up!

What is an HVAC system?

HVAC is the acronym for Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning. As the name suggests, the HVAC system handles maintaining temperature, regulating humidity, and cleaning the air in your home. Many homeowners will think of their HVAC system as a metal box in the basement that you control with your thermostat. While that’s somewhat accurate, there’s a lot more going on behind the scenes.

It’s true that your HVAC system affects every comfort level in your home – fromstable house temperaturearrivalsleep quality!

The HVAC system is an integrated operation that includes many components both inside and outside your home. When you adjust your thermostat, your whole home works in harmony to ensure that all of these individual components provide the temperature settings you want. The key components of your HVAC system are:

  • Outdoor unit: usually located at the back or side of the house, this is where the heat is dissipated inside the house. The outdoor unit consists of a compressor, a condenser and a fan.
  • Indoor unit: Usually located in a closet or basement, this is where heat is absorbed and cooled in your home. The indoor unit consists of a furnace, an evaporator coil, a fan and an air handling unit.
  • Cooling lines: Located between your indoor and outdoor units, these lines circulate liquid refrigerant to evacuate hot air from your home.
  • Duct System: Runs throughout your home and connects to the air vents in your rooms, this is how air circulates throughout your home. The duct system includes both supply and return air ducts.
  • Thermostat: A centralized control point that allows you to set the desired temperature for your home. This communicates with your entire HVAC system and all of its individual components.

When you think about the cost of replacing your HVAC system,It is important to understand that several pieces of equipment make up the entire HVAC system. The cost you will pay depends on the type of device, its condition, and the number of parts you need to replace.

Parts of Furnace

What type of HVAC system do I have?

There are three main types of HVAC systems used in residences. Each type of system varies in terms of parts, dimensions and, most importantly, cost. Knowing what type of HVAC system is in your home is the first thing to consider when estimating the cost of a replacement. The three types of HVAC systems are:

  1. Split system: the most common type of HVAC system; designed with two main units, one for heating and one for cooling. Cooling systems are usually located outdoors and use fans, refrigerant, compressors and coils to exhaust hot air from the house. Heating systems are usually located in the basement and use gas or electricity and ductwork to generate and circulate heat throughout the house. Detached systems often have the most affordable equipment, but the highest installation costs due to duct requirements. The cost of simply replacing equipment for a standard 14 SEER split system can range from $7,500 to $10,000.
  2. Split system (no ducts): A single type of HVAC system that has individual units in each room. These types of systems are usually wall mounted indoors and attached to an outdoor compressor. Ductless systems don’t require running ducts, which can save money on installation costs, but they often cost more equipment because you’ll need one unit per room. The cost of simply replacing equipment for a standard single zone ductless system can range from $8,000 to $15,000.
  3. Packaged System: This unusual type of HVAC system is designed with all of its major components packaged together in a single cabinet. These types of systems are usually installed outdoors and use fans to circulate air in and out of the house. Packaging systems can be powered by heat pumps or by gas and electricity. Wrapping systems are fully assembled by the manufacturer, saving you installation costs, but generally require more frequent maintenance because all major components are exposed to the air. The cost of simply replacing equipment for a standard 14 SEER packaging system can range from $10,000 to $14,000.

How much does it cost to replace my HVAC equipment?

In the front,If you are replacing your entire HVAC system, you can expect to pay between $15,000 and $40,000 for a replacement system.. Remember that depending on the condition of your existing HVAC system, additional repairs or upgrades may be required for the new system to function properly. Additional work, such as duct renovations, can significantly affect the total cost of a new HVAC system.

To better understand the cost of replacing your system, you need to ask yourself the following questions:

What is the status of my HVAC equipment?

A faulty or inefficient HVAC system is often a sign of deteriorated or improperly installed equipment. If your existing system requires repair to support new HVAC equipment, this will be factored into your final cost.Ducts are the number one cause of HVAC inefficienciesand can add $1,000 to $3,000 to your replacement cost. To learn more about HVAC inefficiencies, read our blog,”7 warning signs that your house has an air leak and thousands of winds”

If you’re reading this, we know it’s because you’re looking for a cost figure for your new system. We will therefore explain in more detail how to obtain a duct estimate.

Ducts run through your walls and ceilings to provide heating and cooling. Duct cost is calculated based on the type of material used (flexible tubing, sheet metal, etc.) Overall, the average duct replacement cost is If you are having difficulty heating or cooling your home, you will need to perhaps include ductwork in your HVAC replacement cost. .

Damaged Ductwork

How much HVAC equipment do I need?

There are many areas in life where bigger is better, however, that doesn’t apply to your new HVAC system. When determining the best size for your new HVAC unit, several factors should be considered. The size of your home, the level of insulation and the ventilation rate will affect the size of unit your home needs. HVAC units are measured in tons, which is the calculation of the heat needed to raise or lower the temperature of your home.

Your HVAC equipment and ductwork shouldgood sizefor your home. If you choose an appliance that is too small, it will run all the time, leading to high energy bills and a shorter lifespan. If you select an oversized unit, it may turn off and on again before fully cooling/heating other rooms. Whenyou shouldn’t base your decision on size or price, larger units are generally more expensive. Each additional ton of cooling can increase the unit price by approximately $500 to $1,000.

Don’t worry about knowing exactly how many tons your home needs, a good HVAC company will do an assessment to determine the outlet size required to properly heat and cool your home.

What performance review do I need?

Efficiency ratings for HVAC systems are measured using SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratios). Simply put, a higher SEER rating requires less energy to operate. Most HVAC systems have a SEER rating of 14 SEER to 21 SEER. Higher rated units are generally recommended for homeowners looking for a replacement due to claimed energy savings.

Remember that highly efficient devices will cost more to buy and maintain. A 21 SEER unit will cost twice the price of a 14 SEER unit, and a 16 SEER unit can cost around $600 to $1,000 more than a 14 SEER unit. Whichever performance rating you choose, rememberOne high performance part does not make the entire HVAC system efficient.

The general range that homeowners can expect to pay for a new Air Conditioning system is between $2,500 and $4,500. However, the price can even go as high as $8,500 or more for a deluxe AC unit fully installed by a reputable dealer.

Factors that affect the price of the AC unit:

There are two main factors that affect the price you can expect to pay:

1 – Size

The larger your home, the more cooling power you will need. Cooling power is often measured in tons, and,1 ton is 12000 BTU (British Thermal Units). Smaller AC units can be as low as 18000 BTU, for smaller homes, and up to 5 tons or 60000 BTU for large homes. Correct sizing of your air conditioner to match your home is critical for achieving comfortable temperature and humidity levels. Oversizing an air conditioner will result in a home that feels cold and damp, whereas under sizing the air conditioner will result in high electricity bills, shortened lifespan of the equipment and a house that will not cool down enough when it gets hot outside.

2 – Efficiency

The efficiency of an AC unit is measured in SEER – Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating. The higher the SEER rating, the more efficient the unit. In Canada 13 SEER is the minimum efficiency you can buy, 16 SEER is a good balance of unit price versus efficiency but you can go up to as high as 23 SEER. Air conditioners over 19 SEER are usually equipped with an inverter compressor, offering superior energy savings and maximum comfort compared to a single stage air conditioner, or even a two-stage air conditioner. If you are considering buying a top of the line AC with an inverter compressor you will usually have to invest in a new furnace too, unless the one you already have is the correct match for the new air conditioner.

Installation

Installing a new AC unit is not for do-it-yourselfers. There are a lot of places you can go wrong installing an AC without having the proper training and tools for the job. Questions to consider when installing a new unit should include:

If you are replacing an existing AC are you installing new copper refrigerant lines? A new air conditioner should include new copper tubing for the refrigerant. If the existing lines must be reused, they need to be flushed with a cleaning solution and tested for any existing leaks using high-pressure nitrogen gas.

Do you need ductwork? In order to install a central air conditioner your home must already have a duct system, but if not, there are ductless air conditioners on the market these days and they are quickly gaining in popularity.

Warranty

Most air conditioning manufacturers offer a 10-year parts warranty if the unit is registered within 60 days of installation. For a cost of approximately $400, it may be a good idea to invest in an extended warranty that has you covered for 10 years on labour charges. This extended warranty offers you complete protection (with required preventative maintenance). The best thing about investing in the extended warranty is that you don’t have to worry about any unplanned expenses on your new air conditioner for 10 years.
