Multi-read content how deep should gravel driveway be

Step 1 – Prepare the Area

  • If you get rid of old materials in your driveway, dig them all up and skip.
  • If you already have a good subbase, you can grab it.

Otherwise, dig to a minimum depth of 100 mm. Note that we say minimum,we strongly recommend 150mm deep for the driveway. As mentioned above, bring in a man with a digger.

Best tips -Don’t cut corners here. Go as deep as possible and compact it well. We have seen many driveways that sag and sink quickly if there is insufficient subflooring.

Note: If you are going around your driveway with pavers or the like, make sure all of this material is paved and dry before installing the MOT and laying the gravel. The edging area needs to be dug out and laid a solid layer of cement for you to place the stone blocks.

Step 2 – Install the Subbase

The secondary base on the gravel driveway is very important and is considered the most important part of the job.

It provides a solid base and prevents gravel from sinking. It also helps disperse the weight of cars traveling through it.

So take your time on this part of the project and do it right, or your driveway will soon reveal it wasn’t done right.

  • Remove the membrane
  • Add additional base material MOT
  • A nice spread of the 150mm deep MOT.
  • Tip for a level sub-base – hammer the timber firmly into the ground on the floor so that 150mm shows on the floor, then add MOT to these levels. Then simply remove the latches.
  • Flat rake
  • Reinforce the surrounding sub-base so that it is uniform and even. Remember that you are looking for consistent, even depth.
  • Check depth and level
  • Using the wooden dowel and your spirit level, check that everything is level.
  • A good trick is to place the spirit level on a long, flat piece of wood so that it spreads out the area better. Now go ahead.

Compact the area with pads
Pass at least twice. If there is a drop, fire up a few more engines and back out. Recheck the levels and add more MOTs if needed.

Step 3 – Lay Out the Gravel Mat

Another big step to a large gravel driveway.

This happens quite quickly when they connect with each other. You may need to trim them when you get to the edges, but it’s usually pretty easy.

Once done, you are ready for gravel collection.

Step 4 – Laying Gravel

Glory awaits you.

This is the most satisfying part of the job and the easiest.

If you’ve completed all of the prep steps and the undersole correctly, it should be easy and it’ll look great in just a few minutes.

All the hard work is about to pay off.

Just be sure to scrape the gravel evenly and well; it will nestle nicely in the gravel carpet.

That’s it, you may need to hook up a faucet to wash off the dust and once you’re done you can get your car up there without waiting for the cement to dry.

Needless to say, of course, if this all sounds like a lot of work and you just want to get home and find the perfect driveway, you can find a local dealer and we can deliver all the materials to your doorstep.
