Why is my bulb buzzing?

Register:

When you turn on the switch, you want the room to light up, but you don’t want the hum that comes with it. Besides being annoying, buzzing light bulbs can indicate a problem with your electrical system. Although you can fix some problems, others require professional repair.

Common Causes of Buzzing Light Bulbs

Sometimes faulty or aging bulbs start to buzz before they burn out. However, the most common reason a light buzzes is not due to the bulb itself but to the voltage applied to it. Even other devices that share the power line can have this effect.

So what does a buzzing light bulb mean? Here are some possibilities, depending on the type of bulb you use.

The incandescent light bulb is buzzing

Most of the time, incandescent bulbs operate silently. However, if they use a dimmer, hum becomes a more likely issue. The dimmer works by removing some of the voltage from the line, so the amount of power reaching the filaments decreases, reducing light output.

Unfortunately, the frequent addition and subtraction of voltage causes the bulb filament to vibrate, resulting in that annoying buzzing noise. A humming sound is not an indication of electrical danger, but it may discourage you from using dimming on your fixtures.

Fluorescent lights are buzzing

Older fluorescent lights are notorious for flickering and buzzing. You can just replace the bulb, but that won’t help if you have an old ballast on hand. This is a device that regulates the voltage of a fluorescent lamp. If the ballast can no longer regulate the proper voltage, humming may occur.

The LED bulb is buzzing

Unlike incandescent and fluorescent lamps, light emitting diodes (LEDs) have no filament or firing arc. Therefore, they have no parts capable of producing hum.

However, LEDs can still buzz if you try to dim non-dimmable LED bulbs. Electromagnetic interference from other devices on the same power line can also come into play.

How to stop light bulbs from buzzing?

Try these troubleshooting tips to keep bulbs from buzzing:

  • Replace the bulb with a new one:
  • Since the noise can be caused by a dead bulb, changing a new bulb can be an easy way to solve the problem.
  • Replace incandescent bulbs with low maintenance, CFL or LED bulbs:
  • They have thicker and stronger filaments (or none in the case of LEDs), which makes them less likely to vibrate and make noise. Plus, low-power CFLs and LEDs have the added benefit of lower utility bills.
  • Use the correct type of bulb:
  • Not all bulbs are dimmer compatible. If you want a dimming feature, choose a bulb designed for that purpose.
  • Remove one or two bulbs from the multiple fixture:
  • If the buzzing stops, it means the dimmer may not be able to handle the running power of the lights at the same time. To solve this problem, replace the bulbs with low-power LEDs or CFL LEDs.
  • Upgrade your dimmer or ballast:
  • Inexpensive magnetic dimmers and ballasts can cause hum. A higher quality replacement may be required to prevent your bulb from making that annoying sound.

Popular questions about why is my light buzzing

why is my light buzzing?

Buzzing can occur no matter what type of lightbulbs you are using, whether you’ve got incandescent bulbs or LED bulbs. Buzzing can be caused by electrical shorts or loose fixtures. While you can fix loose fixtures yourself, electrical shorts should only be repaired by professionals.

How do I stop my lights from buzzing?

To work around this, replace the bulbs with lower-wattage CFLs or LEDs. Upgrade your dimmer or ballast: Cheaply made dimmers and magnetic ballasts are likely to cause buzzing. Installing a higher-quality replacement may be necessary to stop your light bulbs from making this annoying sound.

Is it bad if a light buzzes?

Is Buzzing Light Dangerous? First of all, give a thorough inspection of the circuit breaker. If the buzzing is coming from there, it is most DEFINITELY a dangerous scenario. This is because short or loose wires can cause electrical arcing and may soon result in sparks or, worse, an electrical fire.

Is it normal for LED lights to buzz?

In most cases, buzzing or humming LED lights are not dangerous. That said, if you a hear buzzing or crackling sound coming from a switch, outlet, or wires, there may be a problem and you should contact an electrician.

Should LED lights make a noise?

LEDs lack a filament or firing arc so there are no “moving parts” to cause humming. Unfortunately, LEDs still suffer from electromagnetic (EM) hum caused by incorrect dimming or EM interference by other devices. … But, if your lights hum when dimmed or installed into sockets connected to a dimmer, it’s simple to fix.

Why is my light buzzing and flickering?

Dimmer switches work by rapidly switching the electricity circuit to the bulb on and off which reduces the overall amount of energy flowing through the circuit and to the bulb. This is why the voltage sometimes has gaps in it which causes buzzing (and flickering).

Do LED lights buzz when dimmed?

If you use both a dimmable LED lamp and a matching LED dimmer, some dimmer/lamp combinations may still produce a humming sound. The noise will occur either only when dimmed or partially at full brightness.

Why do my dimmable lights buzz?

The voltage actually increases when you dim the light. A dimmer switch works by breaking up the AC current faster than our eyes can see, between the switch and the light. This creates an electromagnetic effect which can cause vibrations in the switch or the bulb. That effect is what you hear as a buzz or hum.

Why do I hear electricity?

Why does electricity make noise? That hum we hear is actually a by-product of electricity. It occurs as the alternating current (AC) flows through an appliance or electrical panel, creating varying magnetic fields.

How do I stop my LED dimmer from buzzing?

Here are some steps you can take to reduce or eliminate the annoying sound:
  1. Change Light Bulbs: If the sound is coming from the light fixture itself, you might try a different type of bulb. …
  2. Upgrade Dimmer Rating: If the sound is coming from the dimmer switch, you may be overloading the switch’s capacity.

Can a flickering light cause a fire?

Minor changes in your home’s voltage are normal, but flickering lights may indicate abnormal fluctuations. Abrupt changes in voltage from low to high can damage electronics and in rare cases cause an electrical fire.

Why do my LED lights burn out so fast?

Unlike incandescent light bulbs, LEDs don’t produce light using heat. This is part of what makes them so energy efficient. The downside is that their components can be sensitive to overheating, which can cause them to burn out prematurely.

Can a bad switch cause lights to flicker?

Again, most flickering is caused by an old, faulty or incompatible wall switch or bulbs that are loose or of poor quality. There’s a good chance that your lighting issues can be addressed by a quick fix like replacing a dimmer or swapping out a light bulb.

Why is my light switch crackling?

If you are hearing a crackling sound or loud pops when flipping a light switch, it’s an indication that electricity has escaped the safety of its insulated pathway and is arcing as it attempts to bridge a gap in the wiring. In most cases, this is due to incorrect installation, or faulty and damaged wiring.

Why do I hear buzzing in my room?

Some possible causes of that humming noise coming from the walls of your home could be: Incorrect electrical wiring. Poor connections inside an electrical outlet. Switch connections gone bad.
