Why does cold water come out of a hot tap?
When you have separate handles for hot and cold water, you expect hot water to come out when you turn the hot handle and vice versa. So why do you get a spurt of cold water from your hot water faucet before the water heats up? The answer is that the water left in the pipes has cooled over time.
When you turn on the hot water tap the last time you need it, the water will turn off as soon as you turn off the tap. However, hot water must go from the water heater to the tap for you to use it. When you turn off the tap, there is still plenty of hot water flowing through. Once the faucet is turned off, there’s nowhere to direct that hot water, so it sits there in your pipes. Over time, it will lose heat, leaving cold water in your hot water pipes.
Then, the next time you turn on the hot water, the cold water from the hose must escape before the hot water can pass. It’s the cold water you feel the first minute after turning on the tap. When the hot water has had enough time to flow from the heater to the faucet, forcing out all the cold water along the way will give you the hot water you need. The longer the distance between the water heater and the tap, the longer it takes for hot water to reach you and the more water you will waste in the process.

California is notorious for its hard water, and if you don’t install a water softener in your home, minerals in the water can wreak havoc on your hot water circulation pump.
