What happened to my lawn? Brown Patches – Common Causes and What to Do About Them.

September 4, 2020

Scary brown spots. No lawn is safe. From poorly maintained lawns to perfectly manicured lawns, patches of dead or dying grass can appear overnight. Why? What causes these dark spots?

We often ask ourselves this question! Here are some answers.

Watering too little (or too much!)       UnderwateringandOverwatering is a possible cause of grass turning brown or dying. Overwatering creates drought conditions where there is not enough rain to keep plant roots alive and cause grass to die. Yes, natural grasses go dormant after a few weeks without water, and most lawns can tolerate dry conditions for a short time (although they will turn brown). However, prolonged periods of hot, dry conditions like the ones we see here in late summer can kill a lawn.

Too much water can also be a problem. Daily watering can lead to oversaturated soil if left too long. Too much watering like this will smother the grass and stunt the roots. Conversely, frequent shallow irrigation can also weaken root systems, which are more susceptible to drought and disease.

Ideally, lawns should be watered an average of 1 to 1 ½ of water per week depending on the temperature.

Bad irrigation insurance Brown spots can also be created when the irrigation system is not properly adjusted to treat different areas of the lawn.Po or irrigation system coverage can make some places waterlogged, green and soggy while others are dry and inactive.

A good settingirrigation systemis the key to a healthy lawn.

bad sowing Lawn length, as well as mowing frequency, are important factors in maintaining a healthy lawn. Uneven mowing requires deeper mowing to bring the grass back to its proper length, which can really stunt the lawn or require extra watering to recover. As a general rule, you never want to cut more than a third of the length. On the other hand, keeping your lawn too short can stress the grass and cause it to turn brown, especially during the dry season.

Most grasses should be kept at a length of 2 to 3 inches. Regular mowing is the answer and will help keep your lawn healthy and resistant to damage.

Thatch buildup It is a layer of organic debris that accumulatesbetween earth and grass inbaby sheep. Some layers of this fabric are normal, and a thin layer will give the grass better resistance to abrasion and temperature extremes. However, too much straw can cause brown spots because it weakens your lawn and makes it more susceptible to pests. A layer of mulch more than half an inch thick will restrict air circulation and can prevent water and nutrients from reaching the soil. Grass roots will also begin to extend into the overlying foliage instead of the ground.

A common misconception is that mowing causes this leaf layer to build up, but poor soil conditions and over-application can cause this leaf layer to build up too much.

Peeling becomes necessary when the fabric is too thick. But be warned: the best time to compost may not be when you notice your lawn turning brown. Trimming is the most effective and least stressful method for your lawn during the active growing season.

Poor soil quality The health of your lawn largely depends on the condition of the soil. Poor quality soil, such as soil that is compacted or lacking in nutrients, can weaken your root system and make your lawn vulnerable to insects and disease. Also, the pH level may not be optimal for your lawn. Aerating your lawn and improving the soil can make a difference, but it’s best to test your soil first. It makes no sense to take action that doesn’t address the underlying causes of an unhealthy lawn.

Insect Weakened lawns – of any of the above – are very susceptible to insect damage. Brown spots and areas of dead grass can be telltale signs. If you have brown spots, try pulling out a small patch of grass. Infested grass is easy to uproot as the roots are damaged. Parasites and larvae are the most common pests of grasses and they love to nibble on plant roots! Check out our previous blog oncrane fliesfor advice on treating and preventing infestations.

Mushroom seldom, not often, seldom Brown spots on your lawn can also be the result of fungus. Hot, humid conditions along with a lack of sunlight and poor air circulation can create ideal conditions for a fungal outbreak. Low nitrogen levels and lack of fertilizer in the soil is another factor that can lead to fungal problems. Watering in the evening when the grass cannot dry out properly is another cause.

Dehydrating and aerating, maintaining optimal nitrogen levels, and proper watering can all help prevent fungal growth.

So what causes dark spots inyourbaby sheep? As you can see, it could be multiple factors! The good news is that whatever the cause, brown spots can be resolved and your lawn can return to a healthier state. If your lawn has lots of brown spots and is tripping you up, we can help. We provide fulllawn care service, including problem diagnosis, soil analysis andmaintenance and repair of irrigation systems.ContactEastern landscape
