An accordion file makes sandpaper storage simple, easy to transport to a job site and is the perfect space-saving solution for a small workshop.
There are many sandpaper storage ideas out there, but most are often too big for a small workshop. Today we’re going to explore an easy-to-use, easy-to-carry, and easy-to-install sandpaper organization solution in a small workshop.

For your convenience, this article contains affiliate links to supplies or tools I used to complete this project. Purchases made using these links help support the Saws on Skates website and allow me to share more DIY projects. and DIY tips with you. You don’t have to pay to use these links. A few weeks ago we looked9 clever ways to expand your small workshop. One of the things we talked about can make a small shop feel cramped is poor organization. Disorganized spaces feel cluttered and cramped while organized spaces of any size feel spacious and airy.

By working on afurniture projectI grabbed a piece of sandpaper and decided it was time to give my own advice. My sandpaper archive is PATIENT! It’s completely disorganized. Calling it “storage” is a complete lie. I opened the door to my workshop cupboard, threw some sandpaper in the back, and hoped for the best. That’s it.

Sandpaper Storage Solution - my sandpaper storage was a disaster!

Then the next time I open the door, the sandpaper will come out, fall to the floor, and I will be very upset. Really boring!

Sandpaper Storage Solution - I would open the door to my workshop storage cabinet and the sandpaper would fly out

There must be a better way for those of us withsmall workshopto arrange our sandpaper. you know i love oneDIY project workshop, so I first researched DIY sandpaper storage ideas. I love the look of these wooden sandpaper storage racks, but many are designed to hang on the wall and I don’t have a lot of wall space in my small workshop. The other problem is that a lot of them are huge and I need as much space in my store as possible.

I have three requirements for storing my sandpaper. It should be small and not take up too much space. And you know I like to keep thingsmobile in my small workshop, so I needed something that could be easily carried around the yard or taken with me to help with a DIY project at a friend’s house. You know, likeDIY Folding DeskWhereMobile Project Center. And finally, it must be easy to use.

So what is a handyman supposed to do? What’s the best way to store sandpaper in a small workshop? Then I remembered how my friend Cher-Ann from Designs by Studio Cfix your sandpaper. She keeps her sandpaper in a pocket folder. In her post, she says “don’t judge” on how she stores her sandpaper. Who judges? I think that’s a good idea! But I have an idea that will take Cher-Ann’s briefcase idea one step further.

Accordion file becomes a great sandpaper storage solution

Instead of a pocket folder, I foundthis zipped accordion folder 13 pockets. The accordion folder meets all my sandpaper storage criteria. It won’t take up much space in my small workshop. It will be easy to transport to the job site for a DIY project and thanks to the zipper all the sandpaper will stay in its place. Moreover, it will be very easy to use.

Sandpaper Storage Solution - 13 pocket accordion folder

I start my sandpaper organizing process by getting all the sandpaper out of the shop cabinet and arranging it by grit. Because the sandpaper was so disorganized, I found out that I had bought two packs120 grit sandpaper, I only have a 150 grit round disc and found two hammers buried under all the sandpaper. This organizing process is overdue!

Sandpaper Storage Solution - I started by organizing my sandpaper

The sandpapers I usually use are 80, 100, 120, 150 and 220. I decided since I had 13 bags on hand I would separate the random orbital sanding discs from the sandpaper sheets. I wrote sandpaper on the labels that came withpocket accordion folder. Here’s a fun note…there are 13 bags, but only 12 blank tags are included in the pack, lol

POINT:One of the fancy thingslabelerwill make this project more professional.

Sandpaper Storage Solution - the accordion pockets were labeled

Then I put the labels on the tabs inpocket accordion folder.

Sandpaper Storage Solution - the labels were placed on the tabs

I added my sandpaperpocket accordion folder. There is plenty of room to add sandpaper.

Sandpaper Storage Solution - then added my sandpaper to the pockets

In the end, I putpocket accordion folderin the closet. It looks very organized now and look at the space I saved in the closet!!! Now don’t look at another shelf…this shelf needs organization too!

Sandpaper Storage Solution - now the sandpaper is organized and hardly takes up any space

Popular questions about how to store sandpaper

how to store sandpaper?

Storing Sheets of Sandpaper I think the key to storing sandpaper is remembering that it’s paper. Basically, the goal should be to keep sandpaper sheets flat, crease free, and well organized. In my own shop, I store sandpaper sheets in hanging file folders, different folders for different grits.

How do you keep sandpaper flat?

A milk crate is the perfect dimension for sandpaper sheets, and this concrete-form 2×12 cutoff is just the right amount of weight to hold the paper flat.

How do you make a sandpaper holder?

How do I organize my sanding discs?

How long will sandpaper last?

While your sandpaper can last for months with the proper care and maintenance, you should not be afraid to substitute your abrasive sheet when a new one.

What is the best way to sand a flat surface by hand?

How do you sand perfectly flat?

Once you find a place, or a really good piece of wood, then place some sandpaper face up on that surface. Hold it with one hand, and work you piece back and forth against the grit. Do this slowly and carefully, and you will flatten the surface of the piece quickly.

What do you wrap sandpaper around?

How do you use a sandpaper holder?

How do you use a sandpaper pointer?

How do you sand with an angle grinder?

To use a flap disc to sand rough timber, gently stroke the angle grinder over the surface – starting with a low grit and working your way up to a 120-grit flap disc to finish off. If you want a smoother finish, use an Orbital or Random Orbit Sander to finish off.

How do you store Orbital Sanders?

How do you clean and reuse sandpaper?

How often should you change sandpaper?

Typically, you can use sandpaper until it’s no longer flat (meaning noticeable warps or tears) or until it becomes clogged with debris. So If you notice that your sandpaper isn’t doing its job as effectively as it used to, then it’s time for a change.

How do I know when to stop sanding?

We decided to take all of my loose sandpaper and put it into one place. This week we’re making a Sandpaper Organizer for the shop!

I don’t know about you, but I have a lot of sandpaper and it doesn’t have a good home. I have sheets of sandpaper in drawers, discs in a box, and sponges falling off shelves. It’s about time I get all of those pieces together in one sandpaper organizer.

Because this storage unit would be relatively small and have many points of internal connection, we decided to use 1/4″ MDF. We wanted to keep this project as small as we could so that it could fit on small project panels you could get at your local home center. It ended up being a little bit bigger than a 2’x4′ sheet. I followed the cut list and had all of the think pieces ready to go.

The organizer would have an open box on the top for sanding discs, two taller columns on either side for sanding sponges, and a set of shallow shelves for sand paper sheets. To connect everything together, I decided to cut dados in the thin material and use wood glue with little dabs of CA glue to quickly hold the elements together while the wood glue dried. Once I had all the pieces in place, I let the wood glue dry for a few hours.

In the top section meant for sanding discs, I wanted to add some simple dividers made from the same 1/4″ MDF material. I cut a divider for each grit of sanding discs that I had, 6 in total. To better identify each grit of sandpaper in the box, I used my Glowforge laser engraver to etch the different grits onto the dividers. This is completely optional of course, you could simple write the numbers with a marker.

At this point, you have a simple and functional sandpaper organizer. But there was one function that I thought would be kinda cool. I have a lot of sheet of high-grit sandpaper, and I never need the entire sheet. Josh modeled up a quick and easy holder for a circular fabric blade that would run on two aluminum poles. This device would act just like a traditional craft paper cutter, but mounted to the front of the sandpaper organizer. I placed a piece of left-over cutting mat under the cutter assemble, and now I can cut bigger sheets that are stored on the shelves, into smaller pieces as I need them.

I hope this project helped you wrangle all of your loose sandpaper into one place. This was a much-need3d solution to a messy problem that we had. I hope that you check out the digital plans we have available for this project up above, and make it a fixture in your own shop!

There’s a spot for EVERYTHING in this ultimate sandpaper storage cabinet! In this video I go through the build process for this compact sandpaper storage solution. I have spots for hook-and-loop pads, full and partial sheets, belts, sleeves and even places for sponges, micro mesh, sanding pads, Nyalox brushes and steel wool. There’s even storage on top for machines.

Rough dimensions are (in inches):

Overall: 24W x 16T x 9D

Sides: 16 x 9

Top and bottom: 23 x 9

Dividing walls: 11-1/2 x 9

I’m only listing these as a guideline to get you started. Your shop space, material inventory and sizes should all be factored in when designing your own. However, as soon as can come up with a better cut list, I will post it, or a link to it, here.
