Brief Instructions

Video tapes

Step by step instructions

1. Paint the canvas black

Apply a coat of mars black acrylic paint to your canvas and allow to dry. Then use a piece of chalk to draw the skull.

Start by drawing a large circle with an opening at the bottom. You can also follow a circle for this step.

Then draw the cheekbones under the unfinished circle. Draw a curved line inward and then outward. Repeat this line on both sides.

Then draw the line of the jaw. Draw two vertical curved lines above and below without creating a chin.

2. Paint the skull white

Use a 3/4″ flat brush and titanium white to paint the skull white.

Tip: you can use a round brush to help define the edges of the skull.

Wipe off any remaining chalk lines with a soft, damp cloth (I use baby wipes to remove chalk).

3. Draw the eyes, nose and mouth

Use a round brush to draw two black eyes.

Then draw a heart for the nose.

Use a small round brush (round 5/0) to draw the mouth. Draw a smile line just below the cheekbone.

Then paint vertical lines to divide the teeth. Start in the middle with a vertical line. Then add three smaller vertical lines on either side of the middle line (7 lines in total).

Paint curved lines above and below each vertical line to create the teeth.

4. Draw flowers, designs, dots and various decorations

Then, load your palette with the colors you want to decorate your skull with! I chose a variety of colors including: medium magenta, primary yellow, turquoise blue, cadmium orange, pyrrole red and primary blue. You can use this palette or choose your own colors!

Use yours

You can draw a flower on top of your head! For my flower I used the main yellow and

Then paint over the flower. I used cadmium orange for the base of the petals and mixed it with yellow. For the center section, paint in a darker contrasting color such as Pyrrole Red or Cadmium Orange.

On the cheekbones you can paint another pattern! I used the main blue color to draw a mandala pattern.

On the chin part, I drew the shapes of the vine and leaves using the blue main color mixed with titanium white.

Keep adding fun and whimsical designs. You can make small dots, spirals and more flowers. You can make a small heart at the nose and draw some of your designs. For the large flower at the top, I sketched the petals loosely with black and a 5/0 round brush.

5. Draw a rose

I have a tutorial on how to draw these simple roses. You can see it there!

Tip: Pyrrole red is an opaque red that will show up on a black background. If you don’t have pyrrole red, you can use another red, but it may not be sufficiently covering or opaque. One way to make the color pop is to mix titanium white into it so that it looks light against a dark background.

To make a rose, use

Then load your round brush in white (without rinsing). Start in the center of the rose and draw a small curved line. Alternate your strokes to create scattered petals.

The white will create rose petals as it blends with the red on the canvas. Repeat this technique to create roses on your sugar skull.

Then use a

Paint other leaf designs on your skull. Use the round brush to draw spiral vines and small round leaves.

6. Paint other floral decorations around the skull

You can get really creative around the sugar skull! I made other leaf and vine designs on the left and right sides.

Next I made the basic pointed flowers in the bottom left and right corners. I used the main red and yellow pyrrole to draw the petals and the center circles.

Add more detail to your sugar skull painting! I made some yellow roses in the top left and right corners. I also decided to draw white daisies inside the eyes.

Done!

That’s it! What a fun and easy painting with so many customizable options!
