How to destroy a wasp nest?

Wasps are part of nature’s design and their nests, as a rule, should not be disturbed. Wasps are generally not aggressive and do not pose a serious threat to humans. However, if the wasp nest is located too close to your home or in a location that conflicts with human activity, you may need to remove the nest.

If you know wasps nesting nearby but cannot find their location, you can locate the nest by observing the wasps’ flight patterns: if they are flying in a straight line, they may be on their way to or from the nest. Wasps fly straight in and out of a place where they can enter their nest.

Before approaching the nest, be sure to put on full body protection, including gloves and a scarf to cover your face, ears and neck. Wear layers of shirts and pants. Wrap your wrists and ankles close to your body. Check carefully to make sure no part of the body is exposed; Wasps can target even the smallest exposed areas.

Wait until it is dark before leaving the nest. Wasps are sleepy and slow to react at night, but you should always be careful when cleaning the nest. Use headlights if you have one; otherwise, have an assistant hold the flashlight for you. You will need both hands free. Filter the flashlight by wrapping the lens with red cellophane or red cheesecloth, as wasps are attracted to yellow light. A headlight with a red light setting is nothing better. Tread lightly and try not to talk when approaching the nest; Wasps are sensitive to vibrations.

nest in the air

Place a cloth bag over the entire nest and quickly tie it at the top. When you untie the leash, take the nest out. The bag should be well sealed. Place the bag in a bucket of water; Drop a rock on top of the bag to keep the bag completely submerged.

terrestrial nest

If the entrance to the nest is easily visible, a large transparent bowl can be used to block it. Be careful as there may be more than one entrance to underground nests. Place the bowl above the entrance to the nest and place it lightly on the ground so that the wasps have no way out. This will confuse the wasps, but they won’t try to dig a new entrance. The bowl will stay in place for several weeks.

Niche underground or inside the wall

Hives in wall or basement gaps are more difficult to remove and should be left to a professional. (If you find wasp nests in the wall, don’t try to get rid of them from the outside. This will cause them to penetrate deeper into your home.) When you hire a professional to handle wasp problems indoors indoors, ask what methods will be used. The vacuum cleaner is a non-toxic alternative to insecticides and feather dusters. Some professional exterminators are equipped with specially adapted vacuums to suck up wasps, which are then sold to pharmaceutical companies to extract venom for immunotherapy.

Never try to poke an active hive or flood the nest with water, as this can make the wasps angry and aggressive.

After eliminating the nest

After removing wasp nests, you’ll want to make sure new hives don’t spawn in the same place. Seal cracks and holes with spray foam, set up traps, and hang fake wasp nests where you want to deter new nest builders. You can also treat these areas with the DIY repellents listed above. In most cases, the newly mated queens are the only ones to survive the winter – and they hibernate outside the nest in burrows or other protected places. Most wasps will not reinstall old nests, so once the nest is dormant or empty, there is no need to remove it.

The exception is the German yellow beetles, which are known to live in the same nest for many years. In North America, the German snitch primarily nests in burrows, where nests are known to be up to 14 feet long. Removing German yellow vest nests is a job best left to the professionals.

Wasps like hornets or yellowjackets are aggressive, territorial insects that create their nests in higher, elevated locations. It’s not uncommon to accidentally walk close to a nest outside your front door and get a faceful of buzzing wasps. To keep wasps away from settling near your home, you’ll need to take precautions to directly combat conducive conditions, so in this video, we’ll go over different things you can do to prevent wasps from creating nests on your property.

In order to keep wasps away from your home, the first thing you should do around your property is to see how you can clean it up. Lawns that aren’t maintained and cleaned regularly are more likely to attract wasp activity. Wasps can forage for left-out food or organic garbage, and they can use leaf litter or overgrowth as shelter.

First, rake leaves on your lawn and pick up other debris like fallen bark or branches. Take care to not leave any food out (including any pet food) and make sure to throw all trash away into sealable garbage bins. Drain any sources of standing water, like bird baths or plant pots after rainfall.

To prevent wasps from establishing nests on your structures, you’ll need to apply a residual insecticide like Sylo. Sylo is a Emulsifiable Concentrate made with Cypermethrin. This will keep wasps from establishing nests on treated areas for up to 90 days. We recommend you apply Sylo to your structures with a handheld pump sprayer to make mixing and application quick and easy. Before starting any treatment, be sure to wear your proper personal protective equipment, or PPE, and remember to keep all people and pets off the treated areas until they run dry.

Treat areas where wasps can establish nests like under eaves or underneath patio roofing. You can also apply this solution as a barrier application around your home. Just create the barrier by spraying 3 feet up the structure and 3 feet out. Then be sure to treat entry points like around doors and windows.

In some cases, wasps can find ways into homes and establish nests inside. This potential nightmare situation can be avoided by using exclusion products to deny wasps entry into the structure. Common exclusion products include caulk and copper mesh. Use these to seal tight cracks and crevices and block voids on the outer or inner perimeters of your structure.

For spaces you can’t seal, like the weep holes along your foundation, you may want to consider using a product like D-Fense Dust. D-Fense Dust is a dry, water-resistant insecticidal dust that can be applied to voids, cracks and crevices to stop many flying and crawling pests from invading structures. To use D-Fense Dust, you’ll need a handheld duster with a long, narrow spout to treat tight cracks and crevices. Fill the duster about halfway with dust and leave plenty of room for air circulation. Squeeze the duster to apply the product. Apply D-Fense Dust towards the evening, when wasp activity is low. Treat any voids that insects are able to use to invade your structure. D-Fense Dust can be applied indoors as well to treat tight cracks and crevices that invading pests can use to shelter in.
