Here are six tips on how to choose a good, ripe, sweet watermelon, gathered from many conversations with growers, farmers, and personal experience. If you know how to check things like field locations, the selection process will be much easier!

Bin Full of Varying Watermelons to Show How to Pick a Good Watermelon

Picking up a watermelon at the grocery store has always been an overwhelming experience for me when I don’t know what I’m looking for.

If you pick the wrong one, you’ll be stuck with the horrors of 15-20 pounds of watermelon. And then your options are to force yourself to eat that unlucky watermelon or toss it… and neither is desirable.

There were a few times I threw it away because it tasted like crunchy watermelon zest and no one in my family wanted to eat it.

My goal today is to help you choose juicy and sweet watermelonsbecause I know the feeling of disappointment when you come home, eat the first bite of something you buy, only to find it’s not good.

All the tips here are little bits of information that I gathered from my personal experience and many conversations with growers and farmers.

How to choose a delicious watermelon:

Advice: Find locations in the field

If you don’t even read the other tips, I seeThis is the best indicator of a delicious watermelon.

The site of the field is a patch of ice cream outside and this is where the watermelon is resting on the ground. The crime scene should be a light yellow cream color, as my watermelon shows:

A Watermelon With a Yellow Field Spot on Countertop

Interestingly, you’ll notice that the other side of the same watermelon is completely different:

Watermelon Without a Field Spot on Countertop Gives Indication for How to Tell if a Watermelon is Ripe

Much nicer and more typical than I imagine when I think of a watermelon, and that’s fine. I find that the tastiest watermelons I buy can sometimes look really ugly on one side where they’re lying on the ground and then unmarked on the other.

The darker the field spot, the softer it becomes on the vine.If the field spot is white (or even absent), this indicates that the melon is unripe.

Advice

The shiny appearance indicates that the melon is not yet ripe. This also applies to honeydew melon.

Advice

Your knuckles should come out of the melon and the surface should be quite hard/firm. You will hear a squeak if the meat is tender, indicating that it is starting to spoil.

Advice

A Bin of Seedless Watermelons at Grocery Store with Varying Ripeness

This applies to almost any product, but you want to choose the heaviest watermelon for its size. This means more water in it.

The watermelon pictured above in my post weighs 18 pounds! It is heavier than other similar sized melons around it.

Advice

Some watermelons are round, some are oval, and a watermelon will do. But if there are unusual bumps, it indicates that the melon may have been exposed to the sun or the water is not suitable.

Scarring and Pollination Points on Watermelon

This tip was emailed to me months ago by Tom, the production manager for a large grocery chain. If you see dark spots on the watermelon (as seen in the image above), that’s when the sugar is oozing out and indicates the melon is sweet. Also, if you see dots on a line (not stripes), they are pollinators and the more the better. I always look for them when picking melons and have had great luck with this and other tips. Thanks Tom!

  • Find the Field Spot – Look for a dark yellow color. If there is a blank field score, or no field score at all, it probably won’t go well.
  • Choose a dull looking watermelon – A shiny appearance indicates an unripe watermelon.
  • Hit it with your knuckles – Your knuckles should stick out of the melon and the surface should be fairly hard/firm. Tender meat indicates that it is starting to spoil.
  • Choose the heaviest fruit for its size – This applies to most products, but you want to choose the heaviest watermelon for its size. This means more water in it.
  • Checking for Uniform Shape – Some watermelons are round, some are oval, and either fruit is fine. But if there are unusual bumps, it indicates that the melon may have been exposed to the sun or the water is not suitable.
  • Look for sugar spots and pollination spots – If you see dark spots on the melons, that’s where the sugar is oozing and indicates the melon is sweet. Also, if you see dots on a line (not stripes), they are pollinators and the more the better.
