Calibration and adjustment is the key to success

For a skilled carpenter, a power saw is a miracle, cutting straight and angled boards for moldings, flooring, furniture, picture frames, general carpentry, and more. However, the saw’s ability to make accurate cuts should be checked and maintained regularly, as the slightest misalignment can cause huge headaches on a woodworking project.

The saw should be calibrated for bevel and chamfer (check accuracy) before you start cutting. Although often overlooked by inexperienced DIYers, calibration is an important step because the difference is as small as 1° from 1 in. the span will translate to 1/32-in. play in the finished joint. Likewise, 3° over 5 inches. the span gives you 3/8 in. difference. When you start cutting a lot of misaligned parts, you’ll soon notice when assembling your project that your joints don’t fit together tightly because the cuts were made at the wrong angle.

Miter angle correction

A combined square makes ahandy toolto confirm the alignment and bevel of the saw blade. First, make a 90 degree cut in the center of a piece large enough to fit the square edges of the combined square. Make sure your work has a very square, straight edge in contact with the saw guide. Flip the square along its ruler edge to make sure it stays aligned with the pencil line (confirm your square is at 90 degrees).

You can then place the square against the fence and the blade to quickly check the alignment, which will suffice for general construction. There should be no space between the edges of the square and the blade or fence.

Since it can be difficult to see any gap between the square and the saw blade, we recommend taking an extra step when calibrating for fine cuts or woodworking. Take the board you marked, place it on the saw with the blade matching the cut line, then cut the board in half along your marked line. Reassemble the two pieces to see if the cut matches the pencil line. This makes it easier to notice the smallest angle difference. If there is a gap between the cut and the line you made with the combination square, it is a sign of blade misalignment.

Since tool designs vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, you will need to consult your saw’s operator’s manual for specific blade angle adjustment steps. To adjust the alignment on the Bosch jigsaw as shown in the photo, I had to loosen the four hex screws, move the table so the blade was at a 90 degree angle to the fence, then re-tighten the screws . Once the blade lines up with the pencil line when using the combined square calibration control, I know I can rely on my saw to cut the right angles.

Bevel correction

By following the same steps as given above, you can check the longitudinal bevel of the saw. However, in this case you are correcting the blade tilt and the cut you are trying to verify is vertical. Therefore, your scrap should be oriented vertically with the pencil line at 90 degrees to the saw table. For rough joinery, you can simply align the joining square along the board for a quick visual check.

Any necessary adjustments to the direction of the blade should be made by means of a screw or bolt in the oblique post of the cutting head. Consult your owner’s manual for the specifics of your saw. The Evolution saw shown in the photos required me to loosen some of the hex screws, adjust the angle of the blade, and then tighten the screws. When adjusting the bevel, an assistant can provide an extra pair of hands, as adjusting the blade tilt against the force of gravity while simultaneously tightening/loosening the screws can be a difficult chore.

Check Angular Slider

Miter saws usually have an angle pointer, usually a small metal arrow that corresponds to the measurements on the base of the saw. Most tool designers place these pointers in an inconvenient place on the saw, so they don’t collide. However, fun things tend to happen around yards and parts and pieces that aren’t meant to withstand the occasional impact. Any impact on the pointer can cause it to deviate from the alignment direction, so it will point to one corner while the blade is actually aimed to cut another. Pointer alignment issues probably won’t be as common, but you should keep an eye out for them just in case. Adjustments can usually be made with just a screwdriver, but if the pointer is bent or exposed, you should probably replace the part.

Laser alignment

Modern neck saws come in all sorts of bells and whistles. Laser line of sight is a popular feature designed to increase the visual accuracy of cuts. But again, sawmill designs vary and sometimes these laser devices are attached to the blade cover and other times to the arbor shaft. In some cases, they can be removed from the association. A bright laser line won’t help much if it doesn’t match the actual angle of the blade, so you need to check the laser alignment using the same wire square/pen line matching procedure described above .

Insert line

Kerf inserts are usually the plastic plates that surround the blade as it is lowered into the saw table. The purpose of the inserts is to fill the gap between the blade and the nearest support table. The inserts reduce tearing at the bottom edge of your cross sections (thus reducing the need to repair them). The inserts also help prevent narrow cuts from falling between the saw blade and the opening in the table base.

Kerf inserts should fit close to the blade, but not touching the blade. On a Bosch circular saw, I first had to hold the saw head down and push in the locking pin to hold it in place. Then I used a screwdriver to loosen the six screws from the inserts. After adjusting the cutting inserts as close to the blade (teeth) as possible without touching, I tightened the screws to hold the inserts in place. Note: At extreme bevels, the saw blades may cut slightly into the kerf insert – that’s why they are plastic, not metal.

Use the best blade for the job

One consideration that DIY woodworkers sometimes overlook is the type of saw blade they use on their hacksaw. The number of teeth plays an important role in the functioning of the tongue. For example, the blades best suited for tough jobs like frame homes typically have fewer teeth with large grooves to help clear chips.

When cutting ornaments, picture frames, or any fine woodwork, a blade with a higher tooth count generally results in smoother cuts for finishing applications. The type of material is also a factor; For cutting PVC products, a carbide tipped blade with 80 or more teeth will prevent chipping. Application-specific blades can increase the precision of your cutting cuts, helping when splicing joints. A rough cut may require you to sand for a smooth cut, but sanding may alter the shape of the cut, so it may not fit snugly when assembled. Take the frustration out of decorating projects and use the fine-tooth blade for cutting.
