Since post-World War II, copper has been the material of choice for residential and commercial plumbing. Copper is easy to work with in production and during installation. It is also a healthier material for water distribution than lead, which has been used for centuries.

Copper tubing is durable, light and durable but not perfect. It is prone to leaks and pinholes.

Copper seeps into water

With copper pipes, there is a low risk of copper leaching into drinking water and other domestic household waters. But it’s not the pipes themselves that cause the leaching; This iscorrosive.

Pure water

Soft water is low in calcium and magnesium. One of the advantages of soft water is that it does not leave lime deposits inside the pipes. But it can also cause oxidation of copper. The telltale sign of oxidized copper is blue.

Water with a pH of 8.5 or higher is alkaline or “hard” water. Hard water has a high mineral content, especially calcium and magnesium carbonates.

If you’ve ever had limescale buildup inside your kettle, you’ve seen the downsides of hard water. This type of scale can form inside the copper pipe and eventually cause corrosion.

High oxygen level

The more insoluble oxygen there is in the water, the greater the risk of copper pipe corrosion.

Of course, oxygen is present in all waters (H20). But when the water is cold, the oxygen is still dissolved. The hotter the water, the more oxygen can “drift” and attach to copper, the oxidant.

As with fresh water, increased oxidation sets the stage for corrosion.

What is the resistance of a copper pipe?

Copper is quite strong. When used to make water pipes, the metal is very hard and durable.

But that doesn’t mean he’s invincible. As we learned above, copper can corrode. And wherever there is corrosion, the pipes weaken and leaks can develop.

Holes in copper tubing start out small, like pinholes. Depending on the method used, repairing a pinhole leak can be expensive.

How to Repair Copper Pipes

Depending on the size of the hole, the patch can be made with plumber’s repair tape, a plumber’s patch kit, or epoxy plumber’s putty. Each can be found at hardware and hardware stores. To repair leaky copper pipes, you have two options:

  • Replacement
  • Epoxy liner

Replacement

If a copper pipe breaks, replacement is the only option. But replacements can also be made for holes of any size.

Replacing the copper pipes should reveal the leaks. To access the leak and have enough space to operate, some baseboards, partitions or floors will have to be removed.

Damaged copper pipes can be replaced with new copper or plastic pipes. If the replacement pipe is copper, solder is used to connect the old and new section. The connection of plastic and copper pipes requires a special adhesive.

Copper is the most common material for water pipes, especially in civil construction. But there are other options.

Galvanized steel pipes are durable but susceptible to mineral buildup and corrosion from zinc and iron in tap water. They can also discolor water and taste metallic.

If you want plastic tubing, there are several types to choose from: PVC, chlorinated PVC (CPVC), polybutylene (ABA or ABS), polyethylene (ACS), and cross-linked polyethylene (PEX). Approved types of plastic plumbing vary depending on local building codes.
