Standard dimensions of the garage: Diagram

garage

standard garage size

“How big is the garage?” I started wondering when my brother started talking about building custom shelving in his house. Is there a standard garage size or at least a typical average measurement that might get us closer?

Of course, what we did was measure his garage ourselves, but I still wanted to know the answer. I thought I’d share this here since many of us are constantly starting projects or planning to buy a house etc.

This is useful information that I hope will help many people in their pre-planning stages.

What you will see as you read is that there are standard garage sizes, but they have a range.

I consider that a good thing and hope to appear at the wider end, but these ranges should give you an idea whether you’re drawing plans or wondering if you have enough space for it. to use as a workshop, human cave or something else.

Standard dimensions of the garage

There are many differences, but we’ve been trying to stick to the average range of garage sizes for decades now. As a general rule, we allow each car to be 9-10 feet wide and 20-24 feet deep.

A single garage door is typically 8 feet wide, adding 8 feet in width for each additional vehicle, with a standard height of 7 feet. They are usually 1 to 1.5 inches thick.

These widths and depths are made to leave 3 feet between your vehicle and the side walls plus 3 feet between each vehicle. They also allow sufficient depth to stack vehicles of varying lengths as well as accommodations so you have room to walk.

Garage size 1 car

single car garage dimensions

For individual garage sizes, not much has changed. The majority come in the following sizes:

  • Lenght:
  • 12 feet
  • Depth:
  • 20 to 24 feet
  • Door width:
  • 8 sets

There are instances where you will find garage doors that are 9 feet wide, but these are the exceptions. There are rare instances where the interior width is a bit wider, but that’s a luxury not found in most homes with a garage.

Garage size 2 cars

two car garage dimensions

The size of the double garage is quite different as it is the most common size of the garage. The options are great, but ultimately we’ll have to measure our own pre-built garage to get the exact dimensions. Here’s your average battery life:

  • Lenght:
  • 18 to 20 sets
  • Depth:
  • 20 to 24 feet
  • Door width:
  • 16 feet

18 feet wide is your bare minimum, not only due to the width of our vehicles, but also due to most building regulations. The width of the garage door can vary up to 17 or 18 feet.

Garage size 3 cars

three car garage dimensions

The three car stations became interesting due to the need for a post between the two gates. It is very rare to see three separate garage doors. Usually has a double-wide door and a car door.

  • Lenght:
  • 26 to 28 sets
  • Depth:
  • 20 to 24 feet
  • Single door width:
  • 8 sets
  • Double door width:
  • 16 feet

At this level you start to find more customization as people usually have homes (or at least garages) built to order.

Garage size 4 cars

four car garage dimensions

Level 4 garages are even rarer and are only built on the most luxurious homes. Customization happens frequently here, but there are always mediums you can expect to move:

  • Lenght:
  • 34 to 36 feet
  • Depth:
  • 20 to 24 feet
  • Door width:
  • 16 feet by

These almost always have two 16-foot-wide garage doors, each with a pillar between them. They will often have the greatest depth to accommodate closets, bike racks, and other accessories that you won’t find in smaller garages.

Standard garage height

Excluding attics, bonus rooms, or apartments above the garage, typical garage heights are at least 7 feet and often 8 feet. Homes with vaulted ceilings always go within 7 to 8 feet before the pitch of the roof begins to turn inward.

Standard garage depth

Let’s consider the standard depth of the garage, regardless of width, as this will translate to all different widths:

  • Standard Depth Range:
  • 20 to 24 feet
  • Minimum Garage Depth:
  • 20 sets
  • Storage cabinet depth:
  • 1 foot to 1.5 feet

Why this problem? You need to have enough depth to put your entire vehicle in the garage while accommodating cars of different lengths.

Also, you need enough room to wobble so you don’t make mistakes like closing the garage door on your trunk. And you’ll still need room to move around in the garage, closets, and more.

Average car size

Let’s go ahead and take a look at the most common car sizes so you can think about them when making your plans:

compact car

  • Length:
  • 14 to 16 feet
  • Lenght:
  • 6 to 7 feet
  • Height:
  • 5 to 6 feet

These refer to typical 2-door sedans and most sports cars, while newer diminutives with shorter lengths will be even shorter, around 10-12 feet.

Bigger car

  • Length:
  • 16 to 18 sets
  • Lenght:
  • 6 to 6.5 feet
  • Height:
  • 4.5 to 5 feet

These are the four-door models and the larger luxury models have a more spacious trunk, seating area and dashboard.

Trucks, SUVs,

  • Length:
  • 16 to 19 sets
  • Lenght:
  • 6 to 7 feet
  • Height:
  • 5 feet to 6 feet

These refer to your mid-size family vehicle, such as a typical minivan, mid-size SUV, and 2-door minivan. Larger trucks and those with dual wheels will be much wider and longer.

The advice given here is to leave at least 3 feet between your cars (by width). You need room to walk between them, open doors, and climb, all without hitting other cars or walls.

Typical Garage Cabinet Dimensions

Another thing to consider when thinking about the depth of your garage is whether there is enough room to install the cabinets. Alternatively, you can hang half-size cabinets vertically overhead so your range hood has more room to pull up. Standard cabinet sizes are:

  • Depth:
  • 1, 1.5 or 2 feet
  • Lenght:
  • Change
  • Height:
  • Change

These sizes are for garage cabinets as well as kitchen cabinets. Typically, you’ll find three basic depth-related sizes to choose from, and then the width and height will vary by brand and model.

This allows you to make the right choice based on the range of widths you find in standard garage sizes.

The depth of your cabinets does not count towards the depth of your garage, so if you are going to add more, you should subtract the depth of the cabinet from the overall depth to ensure that you can still tow your vehicle to the end. inside and with room to walk around.

Stairs, bumpers,

Another thing to consider is (in many cases) that your garage floor is not level with the floor it leads to. Many garages require two or three steps to reach the hallway or kitchen door that the garage connects to.

You should expect the door to not be recessed, which means that the stairs will have to protrude towards the garage. Standard stair depth is no less than 10 inches on each side (the part you walk on).

In two stages, you can expect them to stick out 20 inches to 2 feet. Add more for three stages. I hope your door is on the side where the stairs won’t let you lose depth.

I’ve never seen this in person, but I know some people install bumpers on the front wall of the garage so the drivers don’t go too far and hit the wall which could damage the architecture of the garage.

If this is you, plan to drop at least 6 inches deep, if not more. Others, like my parents, added little curbs for their front wheels to bump into to guide them through the parking lot. These don’t cost you space, so I highly recommend using them on padding.

garage door size

standard garage dimensions

As you’d expect, this is another area that comes in a variety of sizes allowing for customization. There are even small garage doors for vehicles like golf carts, motorcycles, and ATVs. But in general, here’s what you can expect:

  • Lenght:
  • 8 feet for a single garage plus 8 feet for each additional car
  • Height:
  • 7 feet
  • Thickness:
  • 1 to 1.5 inches

Even among custom sizes, there are standardizations. For example, there are 9ft wide garage doors to provide a little extra space on either side when you arrive.

There are also 8 foot high garage doors, and of course any other custom height you want. Thickness varies, but it’s usually half an inch for two half inch insulated sandwich panels to manage heat transfer.

Zoning regulations on minimum garage size

Another consideration, especially if you’re planning to build a garage, is to make sure you follow any regulations set by the city or state.

Everyone has a building code, which often requires specific ranges, or at least minimum sizes, for almost everything, including garages.

You will find it very annoying when you realize that they even dictate the type of hardware you use for your garage door where a motor can be fitted for it and even remote control sensors for it etc.

It’s easier to consult with a professional builder once you have your plan in place so they can tailor it for you.

Alternatively, if you want to learn and do your research, you can buy a book with this information or look it up on your local government website.

This discussion onWhat are testers looking for in attached garages?can help you get started. Who knew residential garages were so complicated… (it’s not, but bureaucracy yes.)

Standard garage sizes aren’t so standard!

It would be nice to have an exact standard garage size instead of “type” standards with different types.

I understand the need to allow customization (I like options myself), but just know that you will have to pay extra for these options if you plan to build a house, garage or even a separate warehouse.

And most importantly, if you’re just trying to figure out the size of your own chest, you need to get out a tape measure and check it out for yourself.

It will only take three measurements and you will know the exact size. Don’t rely on averages if you’re planning a project. The most fortunate!
