Today we bring you a video from our workshop on how to wire half switch sockets. A half-switch outlet is an outlet in which the top or bottom half of the outlet is controlled by a switch, while the other half is always on. This outlet configuration was popular in homes built in the 1980s when this method of wiring was in its heyday. This video explains a wiring method to create a semi-switched outlet to help you diagnose or create this configuration in the future.

In this example, the power comes from the circuit breaker panel, then from the switch box, then from the outlet. After the video and some images, I explain an alternate method that can be used to reach halfway up the switch socket when the current reaches the first socket.

Through-hole wiring diagram

If the video is moving too fast, these images will clear up the wiring configuration.

Alternate wiring method

In the approach shown in the video, power first enters at the switch. If power enters the outlet first, a semi-switched outlet can be obtained by plugging in the wire from the switch. This is achieved by running a two-wire cable from the outlet box to the switch box. Feed from the outlet box to the white wire (should wrap with black or red electrical tape to show it is being used to bring “warm” to the switch) and then into the box of the switch, the black and white colored wires are connected to the switch, which has the effect of “heating” the black wire, running in reverse in the same cable as the socket.Using several braids, you can fix both hot transfer and hot transfer at the top and bottom of the socket.

Dave Rongey has aset of electronic wiring diagramsfor both semi-switched cabling methods. (There are a few advertisements on this page…but I think Dave’s drawing is a very good overview of both wiring methods.) Note that recent changes to the National Electrical Code require a neutral wire in all switch boxes, which means that the alternate method (in which power enters the outlet instead of the switch) is no longer acceptable, unless a three-wire cable is run from the taken at the switch, this does not save money and is therefore not a good solution.

Additional Thoughts

  • We have never seen a case where a single outlet is placed on two completely different circuits (controlled by different circuit breakers); however, you should be aware that someone can wire an outlet this way, even though it may violate code.
  • The cables shown here are NMB 14/2 and 14/3 cables, suitable for most household wiring. 14 test leads are required for 15 amp circuits. Thicker 12-gauge wire is required on 20-amp circuits, such as those commonly found in kitchens.

Popular questions about how to wire a half switched outlet

How do you wire a half switched outlet?

Can half of an outlet be on a switch?

Most of the outlets in your home are of the duplex variety—that is, you can plug two devices into them at one time. A half-hot (or switched) outlet is a duplex outlet that has one half permanently “on,” or ready to provide electricity, while the other half can be turned off and on via an ordinary wall switch.

How do you separate an outlet from a switch?

Your choices are to run a separate line from the electrical box to the outlet, or run a separate line from the hot lines in the light switch box to the outlet. One tip is to make a little drawing of what is connected to what as you take things apart, even tagging wires with labels if you need to.

How do I rewire a switched receptacle and make it permanently hot?

In your outlet box there is 2 black wires in wire nut, this is your constant hot going to other outlets. Remove red wire from outlet Remove wire nut from black wires and connect to outlet were red wire was and other black wire above it. Red wire going to switch is not needed now.

How do you wire a 2 wire outlet?

Why would an outlet have 2 hot wires?

The reason for multiple hot/neutral wires for one outlet is that the outlets are daisy-chained together. This means hot/neutral is only coming from one of the wires and it is being sent to the other wire.

What is electrical Half wire?

Half wire – It’s a phase wire which is laid between switch & light point, point– It’s either a light or power point where light or equipment are connected. Light is connected with light point & equipment is connected with power points.

Can I connect red and black wires together?

Red Electrical Wires

These wires are typically used for switch wiring as well as the interconnection between smoke detectors hard-wired into the power system. You can link two red wires together, or you can link a red wire to a black wire. Since red wires conduct current, they are considered hot.

Can you turn a switch into an outlet?

Yes, a switch can be converted into an outlet if the wiring can be identified back at the source and one of the wires (the neutral or white) can be connected to the neutral source.

How do you wire a switched outlet diagram?

Can you make a switched outlet hot all the time?

If you could tolerate one switch controlling both fan and light, you could create a constant hot at the outlet by bypassing either the fan or light switch and connecting the two switch wires together. Then one of the blacks at the outlet box would be constant hot.

Can a GFCI outlet be wired half hot?

No. GFCIs receptacles cannot be switched, nor can they be split. Best bet is to use a GFCI breaker in the panel, then you can use regular receptacles that you can split and switch, and everything will be protected.

What happens if you don’t break the tab on an outlet?

The unrestricted plate allowed the power come in on one set of wires and leave on the other just as the break off tab does on modern outlets. Last item in the circuit will only have one set of wires to it. Leave the tabs or you will kill power to the remaining items on the circuit.

What is a pigtail wire?

A pigtail wire is a short length of wire that connects at one end to a screw terminal on an electrical device, with the other end joined to circuit wires with a wire connector (wire nut).

What happens if you connect 2 hot wires?

Two hots of same circuit – nothing should happen.
