How to replace stairwells?

Just looking at the stair railing system, it seems hard to remove a pin – but it’s not. When this type of system is built, thin fillers of wood, called files, are used to secure and make room for the shafts to rotate inside the rails at the top and bottom. Usually they are whatever is preventing the shaft from turning. To remove a pin, first remove the files on the sides, then remove the pin. If you have a damaged staircase or a few split or cracked posts, or you don’t like the way it looks, you can change that.

Necessary things:

  • Screw, 3/4 inch
  • Screwdriver
  • Cross clamps
  • Cord
  • Protective glasses
  • Miter saw
  • Sandpaper, grit 100
  • hand block
  • Finishing nails
  • hammer
  • nail set

Procedure:

  1. Drive the 3/4 inch screw lengthwise into the screwdriver lanyard. The netting is a flat piece of wood that sits horizontally between the spindles at the bottom. Drive 1 inch from the pin you want to remove. The screw should only penetrate about 3/16 inch. The idea is to drive the screw into the thread as far as possible without crossing all the way through the thread.
  2. Tighten the screw head. Firmly pull the screw. If the net does not jump, wiggle and wiggle the screw to loosen the pin in the net so it comes out of the groove. Use a diagonal pin to remove the pin.
  3. Tap the bottom of the pin with the palm of your hand in the direction of the lanyard opening. Tilt its bottom up and rotate it as it loosens. It will come out of the top railing channel, leaving a square hole where it is installed between the two files at the top.
  4. Measure your old spindle. Using a ruler, cut the new pin to the same size using a fretsaw. Use 100 grit sandpaper to sand the outlines of the spindle on the hand block.
  5. Insert the end of the pin into the square hole in the top slot of the old pin. At first, the axis of rotation will be tilted. Press the bottom of the pin to the correct position. If it’s too tight and won’t fit in the top hole, block the sides of the bottom axle with your hand until it fits in the square hole.
  6. Remove the screw from the tenderloin. Flip it over so that the screw hole is facing down. Use sandpaper to smooth the net. Tap the net into the opening. To complete the substitution process, drive the 1-inch-long finishing nail over the netting. Place the nail in the nail set.
