There are two types of hoods that you can install in this case:ductless range hoods and ducted range hoods.

A ductless range hood does not need a duct; it recirculates the air in your kitchen through the charcoal filter. These types of hoods can be installed smoothly in a few hours or less.

Watch our video below to learn how to install a ductless range hood.

If you prefer a ducted range hood and have not yet installed ductwork or roof vents, hire a professional to install the ductwork. Installing ductwork is a difficult project to do yourself, and it can cost you time and money if the installation is wrong.

Although installing ductwork is complicated, we can make it easier for you with some helpful installation tips.

How to install a conduit – 9 useful tips

Wall Range Hood with Beautiful Backsplash

Before cutting losses in the house, make a plan.

Once you start sawing into your wall, you can’t exactly put that wall together – it’s not easy anyway. Therefore, it is paramount that you determine where your ductwork can run. For the whole pipeline to work, you can’t have giant studs in the way – also, if you encounter any wires or other cables, your conduit can’t pass through that area. You will have to find another way for him. Ideally, your ducts should be unobstructed to the outside of your home.

You can pass it through walls or through ceilings which we will discuss below.

Before drilling holes in the house, decide where to install the hood.

Island Range Hood with Marble Countertops

One of the first things you need to do is answer the following question: Should I vent the hood through the wall or over the roof? The location of your scope will likely determine this. If you have a choice about where to place your conduits, ask yourself which path has the least resistance? What is the shortest way out without wires or obstacles?

Some range hoods can only be installed with one type of ductwork. Aisland hoodmust vent through the ceiling, whereas a wall-mounted range hood can vent through a wall or a ceiling, depending on your kitchen layout.

Use rigid conduit.

To get the most out of a range hood, install it with a rigid duct system. This material is much more durable than pipes, which are more likely to cause you problems during the first year of installation.

For more information on choosing the right ducts for your range hood, seethis paragraph.

Leave an 18” space between the elbows.

sbXg8zP11RqIvd5sOr9q5mXhgyDCK7j37TOYoJJyeqGMIhVf0Uk2K8BwXwl5xE7yZv54MbjEEsWTvLoLB

The following few tips are aimed at maximizing the efficiency of your extractor hood. Allow 18 inches of straight duct to pass between each elbow to reduce the internal resistance of your ducts.

When the elbows are too close together, grease can accumulate in the joints, reducing the efficiency of the hood. Also, each bend has additional resistance in the ducts, so the air slows down.

In fact, it might not quite take place outside your home, which could lead to reverse drafting. Backflow occurs when there is not enough power to channel the air from your kitchen to the outside. As a result, cooking fumes seep into the kitchen instead of escaping outside your home.

The first elbow should be no closer than 18″ from the hood.

It is important to leave space not only between the elbows but also from the top of the hood to the first elbow. Otherwise, a large amount of fat will accumulate in the elbow joint over time and significantly reduce the efficiency of the hood.

Do not use more than two elbows.

To ensure the hood operates as efficiently as possible, use no more than two elbows in your ductwork. More than two bends is just too much drag and air won’t flow easily out.

Best, as long as youmaintain your cooker hood filters, you don’t have toclean your hood. More than two bends negatively affect airflow, putting more strain on your range hood motor. Additionally, grease can build up and you may have to pay to have your ducts serviced.

Plumbing cleaning is a highly specialized field and can be expensive. As long as you follow these setup tips, you should be fine.

Do not install more than approximately 30 feet of conduit.

Our final tip for the ducts themselves relates to length. Similar to overuse of the elbow, too long a conduit will increase drag. The ultimate goal is to ensure that all unwanted contaminants are vented outside the home, so be sure to install 30′ or less for your ductwork.

For more information on installing a duct system, check out our ultimate guidethis.

Buy a wall or roof covering.

Wall or roof covers are a sure way to keep your ductwork in good condition for the life of the range hood.

If you are venting your range hood through an exterior wall, consider purchasing a built-in range hood. Or if you have ceiling ventilation, buy a range hood. This will prevent large debris and small animals from entering or falling inside the ductwork, which can significantly reduce the effectiveness of your range hood in the long run.

We’ve researched and reviewed four of the best range hoods on the marketon this link.

Install a damper.

A damper is similar to a range hood cap in that it keeps dirt and debris out of the ductwork. The main difference between the inverted shaft damper and the roof cap is that the inverted shaft damper is located inside the duct system.

The regulator not only keeps debris out, but also prevents stretching. In other words, it will prevent air from traveling up the duct and back into your home. The rear damper is basically a stainless steel vent that opens when the range hood is on to allow air to escape and closes when your range hood is off.

With the installation of any residential range hood, we strongly recommend usinghood regulator. To learn more about the reasons, seeOur complete guide.

The higher the CFM, the larger the duct.

The last tip concerns the size of the conduit. With 400 CFM range hoods, install 4″ duct. Between 600 and 900 CFM, install 6 in. duct. Between 900 and 1200 CFM, opt for an 8″ duct. And finally, with 1200 CFM or more, install a 10″ duct.

You can always opt for larger ducts; The most important tip is that too small ducts will choke the air and your range hood will not work efficiently.

If you want to know more, we will talk a lot about duct sizesin this article.

Where to buy range hoods without ducts or recirculation

Ductless Range Hood

You may not need an extractor hood; in this case, you don’t have to go through the complicated duct installation process. Instead, you can buy a new tubeless hood.

At Proline Hoods, we stock dozens of professional quality recirculating hoods. The Proline range hood is a beautiful and functional upgrade to your kitchen.

Should a range hood be vented outside?

It is ideal for venting your hood to the outside.Ceiling hoodMuch more efficient, powerful and durable than ductless range hoods. But, it is not mandatory. You can also buya tubeless balaclava, draws air through the carbon filters and returns it to your kitchen. Sometimes this type of hood is ideal if you don’t have room for ductwork. It depends on your kitchen layout, but always consider a ducted range hood over a ductless range hood.

My scope hood does not come with instructions. We don’t know how to install it.

If your range hood doesn’t come with instructions, call the manufacturer and ask for instructions or check their website. You can also watch this video on how to install the hood.

We have many video tutorials you can findthis. If that doesn’t help, check it outour installation guide.

Does the Liquid Nails adhesive hold the cap instead of the screw?

No, the hood must be fixed to the uprights with screws for better support. Small hoods weigh around 30 pounds and large hoods can go up to 100 pounds. Liquid Nails adhesive is not strong enough to support the weight of a mid-range hood.

I am updating my kitchen and need to replace an old Fasco hood. What type of hood will be compatible with my existing ductwork?

Speak to your manufacturer for the duct size of your replacement hood. It should match the duct size of your Fasco hood. Otherwise, you risk ending up with a conduit that is too small. The air will then try to move outside your home. We recommend that you replace your old hood with a hood with the same CFM. This way the air can move smoothly outside your home.
