Multi-read content how to grow lantana from seeds

Q. I tried to start using Seed Lanterns and I can’t get anything to work. What am I doing wrong?

A.Lantana, Lantana camara,It is a common shrub in all regions of the country, whether planted in the ground or in pots. Multi-colored flowers can create rich accents for the garden landscape anytime, anywhere. In Southern California, Lantana is considered a year-round garden plant, but in colder regions it is considered an annual.

Frugal gardeners in these colder locations often take cuttings from their lantana plants in the summer and keep the rooted cuttings indoors until winter is over and they can return to the garden.

To propagate Lantana plants from cuttings, cut 6 to 8 inches from the newest growth. You should have at least two nodes (where the leaves grow from the branches) on each cutting. Cut the flowers and remove the leaves at the lowest node. Plant the lowest knotted branches covered with soil. Keep the soil moist but not soggy.

Lantana plants are very easy to root in the summer, so now is a good time to try this plant. Using rooting hormone can increase your success rate, but I don’t find it necessary.

Lantana is also easy to grow from seed, which can be started indoors any time of year. Simply sow the seeds in a sterile commercial soil mix formulated for initial seed, lightly coating the seeds over the planting mix.

You need to keep the soil moist but not wet while you wait for the seeds to germinate. The ideal soil temperature for seeds to germinate is 70 to 75 degrees. Patience is required as germination usually takes six to eight weeks. Due to the long germination period, a mixture of sterile soil should be used to prevent soil-borne diseases and watered carefully to prevent the seeds from rotting.

Whether you choose to grow them from seed or cuttings, your efforts will be rewarded with a supply of drought-tolerant shrubs that can provide your garden with mounds of bright color.

Q. We were doing renovations and had to remove a large tree branch about 4 inches in diameter. He was cut from the trunk. Should I put resin on the tips of the cut branches to prevent the disease from entering the tree?

A.Make sure the cutting head is smooth and not wrinkled. You do not need to apply mastic as the plant is able to create its own barriers against decaying fungi.
